My dog ate half a chocolate brownie, will he be OK?

He's a big 32kg lab. I've weighed the other half of the brownie and it weighs 30g so that will be around the weight of the half he ate.

I didn't make them, they were a present and are strong so I suspect dark chocolate was used in them which is what worries me. I've left a message with the emergency vet but I'm worried sick.

My 1 year old chihuahua ate an entire bar of fruit and nut chocolate, and not the small bar, last week. I panicked more because of the fruit in it is poisons to dogs. But he didn't even get sick, or act any different. Him being so small I thought he would literally die.

Hes fine. Dark chocolate is worse than milk anyhow and my dog has still survived eating things he shouldn't.

Keep an eye on him, he night just get an upset tummy.

He'll be fine. I once had a staffie who ate an entire selection box. She had the runs then was fine

Wellfuckmeinbothears · 17/03/2019 16:06

If he was going to be ill he probably would have been by now but just keep an eye on him. Ours slept for hours with a big stupid grin on his face every time he ate something he shouldn’t! This is him being told off for eating a whole chicken carcass!

@Wellfuckmeinbothears I am sat giggling like a lunatic at that picture Grin what a face.

PS op I'm sure you'll both be okay! My greedy piggie Staffie once ate a whole tub of butter and an Easter egg with foil on, in the same sitting. Lived another 11 years after that

HarrySnotter · 17/03/2019 16:41

Well, no ill effects so far so I'm hopeful!

My lab is very petite - 22kg- and she ate a whole dark choc orange bar the one segment I’d eaten. The vet said that was over the safe amount and gave her an emetic and kept her in for a couple of hours til she’d vommed. But I’ve not worried when she’s eaten a slice of chocolate cake......Hope your vet gets back to you soon.

MyNameIsFartacus · 17/03/2019 16:57

Mine has eaten several boxes of chocolates over the years and never even been sick. I'm sure your dog will be absolutely fine.

CaseofEllen · 17/03/2019 17:04

Bloody dogs! They don't half make us worry 😂 sounds like he will be fine OP but do call into vets if he isn't!

Mine once ate the leftovers of a takeaway Indian. Curry, rice, nann bread THE LOT! Came home to the containers all over my bed sheet having been licked clean.. she stank for days but no ill effects luckily!

EnidButton · 17/03/2019 17:15

Well He's giving zero fucks there. Grin

He'll be fine Harry. You've done the right thing speaking to the vet to put your mind a bit more at ease. Our dog once ate a mars bar brownie and wasn't even sick Confused You turn your back for 10 seconds... I think terriers are almost as bad as labs.

Wellfuckmeinbothears · 17/03/2019 17:20

Haha I know. He’s such a bugger!

HarrySnotter · 17/03/2019 17:22

And to top it all - I was saving that half brownie to have with a cup of tea and I was really looking forward to it. Now I have no brownie and Harrydog doesn't give a shiny shite. Bastard.

Our old springer dragged my DS's toy garage across the room and used it as a stepladder to get to half a Lindt chocolate reindeer that had been put well out of her reach one Christmas. The vet said to keep a close eye on her but she was absolutely fine. Too clever for her own good, that one. We now have a cocker who is basically a hoover on legs, so I predict that we will no longer be having chocolates on the Christmas tree.

If you’re ever stuck try these people:

www.animalpoisonline.co.uk/

£30 i think will tell you whether to worry. Cheaper than a vet visit and you get the money discounted if you do need vet treatment.

Definitely them rather than here! There is some bollocks on this thread. “My dog ate x and was fine” is not veterinary advice! And there is enough theobromine in milk chocolate to cause poisoning.

Having said that, 30g in a lab won’t cause a problem, barring other ingredients as mentioned.

caughtinanet · 17/03/2019 17:51

I know you posted earlier and you've had vets advice now but I'd not rely on other people's experience, dogs are different and chocolates are different. Better safe than sorry.

Good that it looks like it's OK for your dog

HarrySnotter · 17/03/2019 18:00

I know folks, thanks. It's encouraging to hear other peoples' tales but I wouldn't put him at risk by not seeking the vets advice, he's too important to me. (Even though he's a knobhead).

He’ll be fine. My Heinz 57 is somewhat smaller and are a whole plateful the other week..... she’s still here, badgering me for her food.

MamaLovesMango · 17/03/2019 18:06

*ate

Crinkle77 · 17/03/2019 19:17

When I was a kid our black lab ate an Easter egg that my sister left on the hearth. She was fine.

My gsd once ate a shit load of chocolate, stolen from the kids rooms (we learned our lesson), ridiculous amounts of poo on the kitchen floor the next morning.
This was nothing compared to the time she stole two cooked onions out of the bin. My god, the mess was indescribable the next day, obviously I didn't know she had eaten them until I checked.
She is still alive at 11 yrs old and we are very careful about leaving food in the bin.
