I'm So Impressed With Jacinda Ardern

I can't think of another politician who would be uniting with her people in such a personal way.

She just seems so genuine, going to pay her respects and comforting mourners with an embrace. She's either a PR master or she's a genuinely wonderful person.

What bollocks.

She's just doing what any politician does - to be seen in front of the camera "to be doing something".

6 months from now, she wont give a flying fuck and gun laws in NZ will remain as they are.

"Genuine" my arse...

HarrySnotter · 17/03/2019 08:14

@FartingInTheFence are you in New Zealand?

StealthPolarBear · 17/03/2019 08:17

It will be interesting to see. Her statement was unequivocal, the gun laws will change. (how is I suppose tbc but it would be disingenuous to suggest anything other than significant tightening). If it doesn't happen I hope she's held to account. If it does happen, I hope it's used as an example for other countries.
All that said I have no idea what the gun laws were like in NZ.

Gun laws are more permissive than one would think, according to BBC breakfast.

ForalltheSaints · 17/03/2019 08:25

I've been impressed in interviews with her that I have heard.

user1493423934 · 17/03/2019 08:27

I'm impressed with her, I'm in NZ.
Gun laws are pretty strict here from what I know (Don't own a gun but know a friend of a friend had to go through some pretty full on interviews/tests etc to own a gun/licence)

aurynne · 17/03/2019 08:32

FartingInTheFence it is clear by your statements that you not only are not in new Zealand, but have never spent any significant time here.

She is a warm, approachable, personable and relatable human being, the best PM I have ever had the pleasure to actually meet in person.

She has already started moving strings to have the gun laws changed and I have no doubt this will happen soon. Not only because of her, but because New Zealanders have given her all their support for this to happen.

I feel proud to be an adopted Kiwi

aurynne · 17/03/2019 08:34

(just to add, New Zealand steadily comes top, or close second - Denmark is usually the contender - in the least corrupt country in the World. Politicians here are indeed another kind)

HarrySnotter · 17/03/2019 08:37

That's why I asked @aurynne. Farting's comment is rather vitriolic, so I wondered if they had some 'inside knowledge' that those of us outside NZ don't have.

HarrySnotter · 17/03/2019 08:39

Pressed post too soon.

I have been very impressed with her and don't really understand where Farting's comment comes from.

SaveKevin · 17/03/2019 08:41

I saw an interview with Victoria Derbyshire. I have to say I thought she came across as awesome. Blush

borntobequiet · 17/03/2019 08:45

Just about every news outlet now reporting gun laws will change. There are plenty of politicians one can criticise for hypocrisy and self interest, but JA doesn’t seem to be one of them. And I’m not sure that politicians are in general worse in that respect than anyone else, just that their actions can be more damaging than others’, and that they are under more scrutiny (or should be, they get away with more if not properly scrutinised).

EmmaGrundyForPM · 17/03/2019 08:48

I have no reason to doubt t she will try to get the gun laws changed. Whether she manages it will depend on the NZ parliament.

The UK got gun laws changed very quickly after Dunblane. However we are not a nation of gun users/ owners so there was very little opposition to the gun ban.

GlitterEverywhere · 17/03/2019 08:52

The main thing that struck me was her humanity. Politics aside, can you imagine May, Trump, Merkel or even Obama interacting with mourners never mind giving them a cuddle?

OP posts:
Crowdfundingforcake · 17/03/2019 08:56

The gun laws in Australia were changed quickly after port Arthur, too. Maybe why the disgusting slug who perpetrated the Christchurch terrorist attack didn't carry out his vicious actions in Australia.

I think NZ's gun laws will be tightened very, very quickly.

EleanorRigbey · 17/03/2019 08:58

I am very impressed with her and have been before this weekend’s horrific tragedy. She is compassionate and committed. I’ve no doubt she will act on her words.

Jacinda has set great examples, most importantly her powerful message of women in leadership and working parents, she did give birth while PM.

I’m not from NZ but was lucky to spend a year there. My sympathies and thoughts are with the people of NZ this weekend.

Thymeout · 17/03/2019 09:22

I've been impressed by Jacinda Ardern since she first became P.M. She comes across as very genuine and has set a good example of her beliefs in her personal life. I like her response to Trump's condolence message.

But I think you're wrong about Obama. He was obviously devastated by Sandy Hook.

Montypontypine · 17/03/2019 09:25

Jacinda rocks. Very down to earth, just very human in her approach to things rather than a career politician being smarmy smooth.

Daisypie · 17/03/2019 09:28

I've been impressed by her from day 1 and never more do than the last few days. She has reminded me of Obama who would hug the bereaved, respect their grief and find the best words he could.

NaughtToThreeSadOnions · 17/03/2019 09:38

I'm not sure farting knows much about JA and has judged her by the stanards of blair, cameron amd may (and numerous other uk MPs)

As thyme has said she sets a good examples in both personal and professional life.

I think too that out of the politians named about would they go and grieve with the moarners as JA has then obama probably is the closest. Trump definately wouldn't and would say this is why we need more guns.

LunaTheCat · 21/03/2019 08:39

I am in New Zealand. She’s brilliant - great communicator, genuinely caring, steadfast.

lavenderbongo · 21/03/2019 08:40

I live in NZ and Jacinda is genuine and rather awesome - the gun laws are already being changed.

JacquesHammer · 21/03/2019 08:42

6 months from now, she wont give a flying fuck and gun laws in NZ will remain as they are

You mean the new legislation that will be in place by April 11....?

Shookethtothecore · 21/03/2019 08:43

What were you saying farting?!
