Has anyone been sterilised?

I have been booked in for my op and I’m really nervous. I only know a little bit about it. What I have looked up on the internet basically. I will be clarifying things at the pre op appointment but I’d be really grateful if anyone is willing to share their experiences? The doctor said they will have to go in through my c section scar. Has anyone else had them do this?

Very simple and fairly painless. You'll feel a little bloated but nothing mayor.
It has worked great for me. Best of luck and you'll be fine.

Also interested in this!

Currently excepting fifth and FINAL dc

Wendywoo1000 · 16/03/2019 17:33

I was done 9 yrs ago via keyhole. I was fine. A bit sore for the week but nothing major. Periods amazingly regular, as when i came off the Pill i had them every 2-3 months which wasn’t great when trying for a baby.

Some complain of shoulder pain after the operation due to the gas or something used when operating but I never had such a thing.

Thank you. I had shoulder pain after my second c section. I guess it is common after an operation. Do they do the operation under general anaesthetic?

Bumping to see if anyone else sees this.

Following with interest. I'm about to have a Mirena fitted because I'd heard sterilising makes periods heavy. I can't stand the idea of that as they are already pretty bad.
I really don't want the hormones associated with Mirena but I'm giving it another try so my periods aren't so heavy.
I'm 45 and could have another 10 years of periods, they're showing no sign of slowing down yet. DM and DGM had hysterectomies so no idea when they'd have gone through menopause

MrsPear · 16/03/2019 22:55

Sterilised with clips via key hole and general. Day surgery unit - so in at lunch time and out for dinner time.
I had a large tummy for a couple of weeks - lived in yoga pants. I did the school run - walking - the next day. Felt a bit rough for the first few days but by the end of a week felt back to normal. Just as a friendly warning it should not fail but nothing is 100% except no sex. It’s failure rate is 1 in 200. I was that 1 and had an ectopic. I now have zero tubes. Would I still go through it? Yes I didn’t want hormones, I can’t have the coil and didn’t fancy the failure of condoms. Be prepared for the questioning - h had to come to show his approval.

MrsPear · 16/03/2019 22:58

How on Earth can sterilisation affect your periods?!

I’m sorry but it can’t - if you have been on pill then you have no idea what your natural menstration is like. It is not a period when on the pill it’s a breakthrough bleed. When you come off it you will be discover what yours is like - it could be worse, shorter or longer.

Scaredofthedark1986 · 16/03/2019 23:03

MrsPear thank you for your reply. It sounds like your sterilisation experience was pretty good all things considered. I’m sorry to hear you were the one in 200. It does make me nervous that it could fail but I don’t react well to hormones and I’m unsure about the coil so I think this is probably the way to go.

I had it done 2 1/2 years ago. Tubes cut and cauterised plus an ablation. They went in through my belly button. Absolutely no issues - no cramps or bloating, back to normal the next day.

tablelegs · 16/03/2019 23:27

I am but was done while I was having a cesarean. Tubes burnt and tied.

pinkkoala · 17/03/2019 00:02

How long did you have to wait for your sterilisation, as i have asked if i could have it as i no longer want to be on the pill, i am 45, they said that i would need to see the doctor and explain i don't want the implant or coil either. What are the reasons for them not wanting to do sterilisation. I have one dd, 14 and my partner has a ds who is 10 and neither of us want anymore children.
Is it worth seeing the gp about this as it was the nurse i saw on my pill check.

Witchofthenorth · 17/03/2019 01:25

I had mine done 7 years ago. It's called esure (I think) was done under general although you can get it done with local. Involved implanting a rice shaped implant in each tube. Scar tissue has grows round them and completely blocked the tubes.

Absolutely no issues, up and about in a matter of hours with a little bloating but nothing else.

madcatladyforever · 17/03/2019 01:57

Painless and simple but brought on a very early menopause at only 45 which the consultant confirmed.

Mrs3ss · 17/03/2019 08:37

I had my op 2 years ago. I was an exception to the rule unfortunately and was bed bound for over 2 weeks. I picked up a nasty infection and I physically couldn’t move as it was excruciating (not ideal as a single parent with 3 kids).

But I’d do it all over again if I had to, was worth it. No issues with periods, back to how they were before babies and the pill!

cafesociety · 17/03/2019 09:58

Had tubes clipped with keyhole surgery many, many years ago. I felt ok apart from an uncomfortable feeling in my chest cavity the day after which eased off when I started walking about...shifted some pocket of gas I suspect.

No change to periods whatsoever, and no early menopause. Just normal. The peace of mind afterwards was great.

Babyfoal · 17/03/2019 10:07

Painless and home by lunch time. Woke up ravenous.

Wendywoo1000 · 17/03/2019 11:11

Is that comment for me mrspear?

With respect, I know my cycle, you dont. Trying for a baby for 2 yrs with periods every 2-3 months. Now regular since being sterilised.

Justmuddlingalong · 17/03/2019 11:16

Had it done via keyhole years ago. Day bed, general anaesthetic. Very straightforward.
Only problem was trying to get my bloated belly back in my jeans for going home. Take something elasticated and comfy for wearing home.

MrsJayy · 17/03/2019 11:20

I had my op years ago best decision ever i was kept in over night but i was last on the list I had the shoulder pain and felt better after a week or so. You won't regret it .

Phillipa12 · 17/03/2019 11:28

I was sterilised 3.5 years ago whilst having my 4th section, best decision ever. As a pp has said sterilisation does not make your periods heavier, we are so used to other methods of contraception that most of us do not know what are regular periods are actually like in terms of flow. Only comment i make on recovery as obviously i had a section at the same time is that i was given oramorph for pain and have never needed that for previous sections.

Lollypop701 · 17/03/2019 11:38

Had keyhole sterilisation 4 years ago. Easy operation, home same day and periods are fine. No issues

FlurkenSchnit · 17/03/2019 11:42

I had a consultation for sterilisation and the doctor said that it would affect my periods, making them heavier and more painful...I have absolutely no idea HOW it would but that's what he said.
I didn't get it done in the end, got copper coil instead as I really didn't want the hormones in the mirena coil.

WLAH · 17/03/2019 11:50

Almost 6 years. Keyhole. No complications. Done on a Mon. Feeling better by the thur.
Heavy periods since but then they were heavy pre pill days anyhow so just my natural cycle really

Rachyabbadabbadoo · 17/03/2019 11:57

Sterilised at 42, and (having not been on hormone contraception) my periods did get very heavy BUT this was most likely due to peri menopause. Periods got so bad I was on the verge of having ablation when they slowed up and stopped at 46. The op was fine, reacted to anaesthetic but everything else was OK. I think possibly any link to heavy periods might be down to peri menopause which can include very heavy periods.
