Kitten has welcomed itself into my home!

A lovely kitten followed me and DD home from school and as soon as I opened my door it ran in! I let it have a nosey round and DD have a stroke but insisted she had to let it out as its not ours and someone may be looking for it. It has no collar or anything but looks well cared for.

We put it back outside to go out come back its gone. Oh and ds open the door maybe 5 minutes later to go back to the shops and it runs in again. Dd was having supper and it was headbutting and clawing at her bowl. I reluctantly agreed to give it some tuna (which I know is not the best according to Google but that's all I have and it seems starving!).

My dd is head over heels for it, shall I take it to a vet to see if it's chipped? Let it back out and hope it gets bored? It's happily purring sat next to me and dd on the sofa now sigh

YABU to post this without a picture!

I’d definitely try a vet.

Dottierichardson · 15/03/2019 18:32

I would take it to a vet and see if it's chipped, if it's been abandoned and you just put it outside it will starve or more likely end up getting killed, personally couldn't face that possibility.

TeddyIsaHe · 15/03/2019 18:33

Take it to get chip checked and post on social media/knock on local doors.

Don’t let your kids get attached because in all likelihood someone else’s child/family is missing their pet massively. The cat didn’t ‘find you’ and you don’t have a new pet, whatever anyone says. Find its owners.

Don’t let it back out. If someone is looking for it and you let it out and something happens to it Sad
Post all over social media that you have it.

ScreamingValenta · 15/03/2019 18:34

Yes, see if it's chipped and have a look online to see if it's been reported as lost. Your local vet will probably have a noticeboard for missing pets too. Personally I would want to keep it safe for the time being rather than letting it wander, as it might be lost or have been abandoned. Just don't get too attached to it in case its owners claim it.

ReSistersUnited · 15/03/2019 18:35

It's likely lost. You need to find its owners, they're probably woried sick.

If you can't find them, you have a new cat!

ScreamingValenta · 15/03/2019 18:36

A picture would be lovely, OP. Hinty hint hint!

ShakeYourTailFeathers · 15/03/2019 18:37

I suspect one of your neighbours is wondering where their cat is Grin

Thatsnotmyotter · 15/03/2019 18:39

Placemarking in the hope of a kitten picture Blush

dArtagnansCrumpet · 15/03/2019 18:40

Here he/she is! Not the best pics but keeps moving.

I'm not saying he is my pet, I have a dog and don't want any more just asking what I should do that's all.

I wish people would stop feeding other people's cats. You have no idea it it has any allergies or medical needs.

Disfordarkchocolate · 15/03/2019 18:42

The weather is awful where I am, perhaps keep it in tonight and then do social media and the local vets tomorrow.

Mookatron · 15/03/2019 18:42

Depending where you are, in our area people are so nuts committed to cat welfare that will come to you with their mobile chip reader if you put it on Facebook! In London.

AudTheDeepMinded · 15/03/2019 18:44

We had this a few years ago, a tiny black kitten hanging around our front door and very hungry. We took it in and asked around. Was with us for around 3 days, by which time it had wrecked the Xmas tree and pee'd in the trainset box. I was very glad when the owners turned up to collect as the novelty had really worn off!

YesItsMeIDontCare · 15/03/2019 18:44

Don't put up pictures of the kitten in case dodgy fuckers claim it. Describe it and ask for proof - most people will have a bazillion pictures of it if it's theirs.

We need to see a picture though!

PurpleDaisies · 15/03/2019 18:50

Awwww!

Houseworkavoider · 15/03/2019 18:54

Awwwwwwwww!

dArtagnansCrumpet · 15/03/2019 19:01

He's gone to dd room and made himself comfortable on her bench!

I do apologise for feeding him I'm trying to help the kitten I have zero idea about cats.

If it's been wandering around all day it will need food - you're right to offer it something. There's not much you can do about possible allergies - try the kitten with chicken or tinned tuna/salmon if you have it, and then if you haven't found the owners tomorrow, you can pick up some kitten food. If you're taking the kitten to the vets, they usually sell good quality kitten food.

thecatneuterer · 15/03/2019 19:22

I wish people would stop feeding other people's cats. You have no idea it it has any allergies or medical needs.

And I wish people would stop saying shite like this. The chances of it not being lost/abandoned and having allergies or medical needs are many thousands to one. The chances of it being lost or abandoned are probably about 85 per cent. If people didn't feed or take in strays while trying to find owners/space in rescues many millions (and that isn't an exaggeration) of stray and feral cats would die and there would be even more feral kittens born than there are now as these stray and abandoned unneutered females wouldn't be taken care of. Any responsible owner needs to chip their cat. Then it will be very easy to find out what the finder needs to do.

OP, what you need to do is first of all buy or borrow a proper cat carrier. Don't even think about using a cardboard box or similar. Then any vet should scan for a chip free of charge. If not chipped then you will need to find a rescue to take it. If you happen to be in London please pm me. If not in London then you can find a comprehensive list of rescues by area here: www.catchat.org

thecatneuterer · 15/03/2019 19:23

Do not apologise for feeding it OP!! You did the right thing!

thecatneuterer · 15/03/2019 19:24

Oh and keep it in while you sort out your next moves.

thecatneuterer · 15/03/2019 19:25

I suspect one of your neighbours is wondering where their cat is and if that is the case then no doubt posters will be going up very shortly and all will be fine.

dArtagnansCrumpet · 15/03/2019 19:31

Thank you thecatneuterer. Made me feel better. I have never owned a cat or have any idea of how to look after one, I have no idea if the cat is happy or what it needs tbh. I thought I'd start with food as it's hungry and water to drink. We are just letting it roam and telling dd not to pester as it might frighten it. My poor dog has had to be confined to the kitchen and garden for now, the cat saw him and hairs went up on its back. Although dog was nonchalant towards the cat. I definitely think the cat has an owner it seems well cared for if a little light although maybe cats are light like that I dunno? Where does it go to the toilet I presume it would usually go outside but some are saying not to let it out incase something happens?

OP posts:
thecatneuterer · 15/03/2019 19:35

It would be better to confine the kitten to one room for now. Bathroom? Spare room? Yes you will need a litter tray. Unless you have neighbours you can borrow stuff from you can make a temporary litter tray out of a washing up bowl with soil in, or sand if you have any, or even just newspaper.

You're not in London then?
