Kitten has welcomed itself into my home!

A lovely kitten followed me and DD home from school and as soon as I opened my door it ran in! I let it have a nosey round and DD have a stroke but insisted she had to let it out as its not ours and someone may be looking for it. It has no collar or anything but looks well cared for.

We put it back outside to go out come back its gone. Oh and ds open the door maybe 5 minutes later to go back to the shops and it runs in again. Dd was having supper and it was headbutting and clawing at her bowl. I reluctantly agreed to give it some tuna (which I know is not the best according to Google but that's all I have and it seems starving!).

My dd is head over heels for it, shall I take it to a vet to see if it's chipped? Let it back out and hope it gets bored? It's happily purring sat next to me and dd on the sofa now sigh

Oh it's so cute. Suspect it's lost.

Cats don't need much maintenance bar food, water and cuddles. He is going to want to do a wee though and if you let him out will probably get lost again. Have you got a cardboard box and some old towels/newspaper? Even if he doesn't get the hint, cats love a cardboard box.

MirandaWest · 15/03/2019 19:38

If you look on Facebook for lost cats in whichever area you are then there will probably be a group you can post on. Or post in a general selling group for your area.

dArtagnansCrumpet · 15/03/2019 19:40

Sadly not, we are in South yorks. Vet opens at 8.30 tomorrow so will take it first thing to see if it's chipped.

I'll try and fashion a litter tray when children have settled to bed.

I hope noone is worrying about this kitten, would be so much easier if it had a collar and tag!

Yes there is a group miranda I've been scouring it and joined the lost pets group too. Will post there this evening with no pic attached as previously suggested!

Right now I would put 10 simple signs just saying "kitten found - please contact xxx" on trees on your street. The likelihood is that one of your neighbours will be out looking this evening and see the signs.

Cat is making itself at home indeed. Oh is laid on the sofa asleep cat is asleep sprawled out on top of him! It really likes oh, lol.

Do you have a proper carrier to take to the vets? You can only use a proper carrier.

ScreamingValenta · 15/03/2019 22:29

Yes, as thecatneuterer says, don't try to improvise a cat carrier - a cat can be out of a cardboard box in seconds. Do you have a friend/neighbour who could lend you one?

safariboot · 16/03/2019 00:23

Keep an ear out, the owners may be out calling its name. That happened a few years back when a kitten came into our house.

Hughes12345 · 16/03/2019 07:33

A card board box is fine, put plenty of holes in it and tape the top.

People tend not to put collars on cats anymore,it’s so easy for them to get caught on something. They’ve very dangerous.

BIWI · 16/03/2019 07:38

You do know that if it isn't chipped, and no-one comes forward, then you've been adopted, don't you? Wink Grin

Ncagain222 · 16/03/2019 07:50

A cardboard box is most definitely not fine OP. Cats can claw their way through cardboard very quickly.

dArtagnansCrumpet · 16/03/2019 08:49

Thanks everyone. Husband has just taken him to the vets to see if he has a chip. He's gone in our old rabbit carrier! Our rabbit was massive so plenty of space.

biwi he's a gorgeous cat and full of character and so friendly but we simply can't keep him. Our dog is hard work enough and it wouldn't be fair, the cat doesn't like the dog so definitely not a suitable long term home for him. I hope the owners can be found and are grateful, I'm paranoid they'll be annoyed or something.

If in doubt, feed

Wildcate · 16/03/2019 08:55

As an aside, OP (and not saying you should take the cat), but it would likely get used to the dog, and they are MUCH less work than dogs.

dArtagnansCrumpet · 16/03/2019 09:05

Well, it's been scanned and doesn't have a chip Angry. He's been left at the vets over the weekend to see if people ring up to see if someone has handed it in and they asked if noone comes forward if we'd like to keep it. I would take it in a heartbeat if we didn't have a dog.

How can someone be so irresponsible not to chip the cat. I thought it had to be done before cats were sold to people like dogs? So sad.

Oh OP

You have claimed!! The dog will come around

MsMightyTitanAndHerTroubadours · 16/03/2019 09:13

a confident cat will soon get used to a dog. Do't force any introductions, don't let the dog chase the cat, reward dog for ignoring

That cat would not have introduced itself if it was that scared of dogs!

It might temporarily have run away from home, maybe it's home alone , owners on holidays but with neighbours popping in for food and the like only catboy has got bored.

Tookal · 16/03/2019 09:13

Chipping is much less common in cats sadly.

My cats werent initially chipped (far less of a thing 12 years ago for cats) but there is a real problem atm in my area of people "rescuing cats" by feeding neighbourhood cats that had homes, then announcing that the cat had chosen them by moving in. My cats have obbiously well groomed coats (long haired) but it happened 3 times!

Soubriquet · 16/03/2019 09:13

And no cats don’t need to be legally microchipped either

But ours is as are our two dogs.

Soubriquet · 16/03/2019 09:14

Oh and one more post Blush

My cat does not wear a collar. We tried 2 or 3 times but she freaked out so badly, it was a danger to leave it on her.

But she is chipped

Tookal · 16/03/2019 09:14

If the cat is friendly enough to come into your home and settle then its definately had a home somewhere.

dArtagnansCrumpet · 16/03/2019 09:20

I still think she has a home, looks well cared for not like she's been on the streets for weeks or months.

Hopefully the owner will have the foresight to ring the vets but at least the cat is somewhere safe out of the wind and rain with people who know what they are doing!

bobstersmum · 16/03/2019 09:23

We had a cat a long time ago that would disappear regularly for days, he was neutered so no idea why. We'd just start thinking the worst then he'd be sat outside waiting to come in like nothing had happened, I think someone was keeping him in.

Tookal · 16/03/2019 09:25

Yeah, potentially it might have left his house and come directly to you so might have been gone for less than 24 hours so it would take me 2 nights before i begun to post looking for it.
