Did you give your baby a dummy? If so at what age?

Just those 2 questions please..

I didn't really want to use one - don't like the look of them, didn't want to get my son used to one and then have to wean him off it etc. But when he was really colicky at 5-6 weeks I tried one out of desperation, and occasionally when travelling. He usually just spat them straight out though and never slept with one. I abandoned all attempts at about 4 months and he's been totally fine without. Doesn't suck his thumb or any other substitute either. I'm glad he didn't take to it. However it always depends on the baby! DS was never into sucking for comfort - even when BF he would stop when he was full.

Bishalisha · 15/03/2019 18:28

I didn’t with my eldest but was desperate with my second; so gave her one at 3 weeks

Nearly 4 years later, I’m still struggling to get rid of it 😭

legolimb · 15/03/2019 18:31

Yes from a coupe of weeks old until about 3 yo.

He is now 21 and has beautifully straight teeth.

I'd rather a dummy than a thumb. You can take away the dummy.

HarryHarry · 15/03/2019 18:39

Mine was given one (without my permission) when he was in the NICU just after he was born. Then I felt bad taking it away because it was all he had to comfort him (he couldn’t BF for medical reasons). Now I only let him have it in his cot at night but in a few weeks I hope to get rid of it completely.

ValleyoftheHorses · 15/03/2019 18:40

Yes. From birth. I am a dentist and didn’t want to risk thumb sucking starting.
They went to Santa for the new babies at 2.6 years.

ValleyoftheHorses · 15/03/2019 18:42

Confused speech delay? DS was speaking many words and sentences by 18 months. He never bloody shuts up!

Juanbablo · 15/03/2019 18:44

Ds1 had a dummy from about 4 weeks old until he was 2.5 years old.

Dd had a dummy from day 2 until she was 2 years old.

Ds2 wouldn't take one, he did briefly for about a week at 5 months old.

ginyogarepeat · 15/03/2019 18:44

Couple of days old to 5 months old.

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 15/03/2019 18:45

Tried all three of them from birth. Probably less than a day Grin. None of them would tolerate them unfortunately.

Thatsnotmyotter · 15/03/2019 18:47

Tried at three weeks (as I thought we didn’t want to use one), and have tried on an off since. He still won’t take it despite trying a million different brands and holding it in, tapping it, giving it when he’s sleepy etc.

If we have another, we’ll give it much earlier.

bitchfromhell · 15/03/2019 18:49

Yes at 3 weeks. Godsend.

Thebookswereherfriends · 15/03/2019 19:01

I waited about 6 weeks because I was struggling with breastfeeding anyway and didn’t want to make it worse. Very sucky baby and couldn’t bear being the soother. Dummy saved my sanity and my boobs. Got rid at 9 months when it was interfering with sleep.

NicksWife08 · 15/03/2019 19:06

From 6 months as it was the only thing that would calm him whilst teething. He had it until his 4th birthday! Perfect teeth, an early talker and no speech impediments.

WeeCheekyBird · 15/03/2019 19:07

I didn't want to use a dummy but my baby was born early and they gave her one when she was in SCBU as a comfort. Shes almost 2 and still uses it at bedtime only.

Would love to get her off it soon as it causes problems with her sleeping as she wakes every time it falls out of her reach.

LeSquigh · 15/03/2019 19:07

Yes, because of the SIDS increased risk without one and yes because you can take the dummy away and not the thumb and yes because otherwise I would have lost my mind by now without one. From birth (almost) with both kids. With my older DS it went to nights only and then stopped around four. DD is nearly 2 and I will do the same.

sakura06 · 15/03/2019 19:09

My first had one from one day old (I had sworn blind I'd never used one, and regretted that-oh the naivety...). She needed to constantly suckle. Had it up until about 18 months. Second had one too, but didn't like it much.

SingleMumFighting · 15/03/2019 19:09

Never used them. It can suppress the appetite of newborns, which would not have been helpful for us. We needed to put on weight on fast.

InDubiousBattle · 15/03/2019 19:12

Yes, from a couple of weeks with my first and from birth with my second. I'm a big dummy (as a sleep aid )fan.

Celebelly · 15/03/2019 19:12

At 3 weeks. It really helps with her reflux. We only really use it when she's got discomfort after feeds as it calms her right down.

GreyGables · 15/03/2019 19:13

Nope. Tried to get him to take one with DS1, didn’t work. Tried again with DS2 (mainly to see if it would help settle him in the car), didn’t work. Life would be a lot easier for me if they had taken one! But they didn’t so end of.

caughtinanet · 15/03/2019 19:14

No, I'm another that really doesn't like them.

fleshmarketclose · 15/03/2019 19:16

No none of mine had a dummy, never bought one because I don't like to see them.

user1496701154 · 15/03/2019 19:20

Yes. Mine was a premmie and had colic so it helped. He still has it at 19 months.hes got an operation in 2 month so keeping it until after he's settled after that then weaning off. He it has for bed and nap time though. His when playing oh and he has perfect teeth and speaks alot.

GrubbyHipsterBeard · 15/03/2019 19:22

Why do people have a problem with dummies? Hmm

From about a month at night because I was worried about SIDS in my case. Rarely during the day but if very upset or ill I allow it. 9 months old.

Nowthenforever2019 · 15/03/2019 19:24

From about 6 weeks. Life saver.
