What's the best chocolate and where can I buy it?

I fancy some naice chocolate for the weekend but don't know what to get.

I've completely gone off Cadburys. I like a rich milk chocolate or a slightly creamy dark chocolate, not too sweet and sickly. Most dark chocolates are too bitter though and most milk too creamy.

What's your favourite? And where do you buy it?

Sorry I missed this at the weekend. Another chocolate addict here. 👋

I agree w Montezuma. I have the 73% cocoa solids very dark chocolate. Also Waitrose own "Single Origin" eg: The Costa Rica 75%. Haiti 75%. Peru 75%. Panama 80% I tend to stock up when on offer. Very delicious and as they are so rich I eat less! All these are chocolate only (I don't like things added to my chocolate - except more chocolate) but there are variants of flavours on offer.

VanillaSugarr · 18/03/2019 11:54

French chocolate is your friend. Valrhona is available from Waitrose, alternatively, you should be able to get this little lot from Amazon.

Valrhona sounds amazing... expensive though!

I don't have a Waitrose nearby sadly.

I like Hotel Chocolat. Their milk chocolate is very nice, cocoa rich and they also do a “supermilk” which has a higher cocoa content.

I like their standard dark chocolate too although they do lots of varieties.

In Hotel Chocolat they often let you sample things if you tell them what you’re after. I did that when I was looking for something for DH with no lactose as there is no lactose in their dark chocolate but DH doesn’t normally like dark chocolate so I tasted the mint and orange ones to see if they tasted “dark” 😬

I also like Thornton’s dark chocolate. Very tasty, not too bitter.

I’m really liking Toblerone at the minute but probably not what you are after!

Batsypatsy · 18/03/2019 12:35

I quite like Hotel Chocolat super milk actually, it's not as sweet.

Toblerone is one of my weaknesses Blush

Paul A Young
Three shops in London.
Nothing ever tasted so good.

Snowflakes1122 · 18/03/2019 12:48

Has anyone tried lovecocoa? It’s the great great grandson of the Cadbury founder I think.
I’m wondering if it’s like Cadbury’s used to be years ago?
Agree Cadbury’s has been ruined in recent years Sad

I also love the Aldi chocolate, previously mentioned.

IamPickleRick · 18/03/2019 12:51

I love Hotel Chocolat. Their caramel ones are always quite accessible I think if you just fancy a sweet treat. The darker stuff is gorgeous too but if you were a Cadbury’s girl previously, the caramel range might be where to start.

I used to get Kingdom chocolate and Paul a Young when I worked in central, it was very very nice 👌🏻

IamPickleRick · 18/03/2019 12:53

Oh I see that Kingdom is a Montezuma range. The peanut butter bar is gorgeous, it has a truffle centre rather than the Hershey crap.

AdamNichol · 18/03/2019 13:02

Hotel Chocolat. Or Green and Blacks; just stay below 70% mark if you don't want it too dark.

Littleraindrop15 · 18/03/2019 14:46

Leonidas, hôtel chocolat, callbaut, daskalides, Jeff de bruges are some good quality chocolate brands probably have to look online to purchase them or john lewis

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 18/03/2019 15:05

Lindt is rank.

Aldi's own is nice (but not the super cheap one in the white wrapper ) and so is Tesco.

I agree re Cadbury's. I never buy it any more.

NoParticularPattern · 18/03/2019 15:09

Have a look for anything from Ecuador. Honestly the chocolate which comes from their cocoa beans is INSANE. I used to buy a dark (like 70%+ dark) from there that honestly tasted like milk chocolate. I can’t remember the brand though but it wasn’t massively mainstream and actually not expensive either. I’ll have a think and try to remember where I bought it!

BreconBeBuggered · 18/03/2019 15:17

You could try something from these people www.lickthespoon.co.uk/ - I occasionally buy their loose chocolates and I'd say the milk chocolate isn't too sweet at all - it's certainly less sugary that what you'd get from Hotel Chocolat.

Batsypatsy · 18/03/2019 15:43

I'll have a look Smile

I am very fussy about chocolate too.

I would agree with Lidl “Rich Milk Chocolate”. For a not too sweet but still creamy taste.

I like a lot of the Waitrose varieties too. They do a lovely Ecuador one. M&S are also very good.

Avoid palm oil in the ingredients, pretty much 90% of chocolate brands have it in, including Lindt and some Hotel Chocolat.

I also really like the original Toblerone with nougat.

happyasasandboy · 18/03/2019 16:07

Marabou chocolate from Amazon or Ikea. Closest thing I've found to the Cadbury's I remember from the 1990s!

AliceRR · 19/03/2019 12:15

Let us know if you find anything OP

I’m intrigued but the Aldi recommendations - will have to try it

Batsypatsy · 19/03/2019 15:08

Will do. I'm tempted by most of the suggestions, altho I don't rate Aldi chocolate. I haven't ordered anything yet, as I'm waiting for pay day, but I've toblerone and green and blacks coming in my shopping tonight Grin

Whittakers is the most amazing chocolate. The coffee one and the macadamia one especially. Sadly they’re only available in New Zealand which is a pretty hefty trip just for some scoff.

I like Milka an awful lot. I buy it in the Asda. The milk and the Happy Cow one which is milk with blobs of white. Lovely!

Batsypatsy · 19/03/2019 15:47

I've had Whittakers mint crisps, they're nice.

I think what I'm looking for is a darker less sweet milk. I've tried Hotel Chocolat before, some are nice.

I don't want palm oil, definitely not artificial sweeteners. If it has to be flavoured I prefer coffee.

I'll try some of the suggestions when I get paid. I can't spend £15 on a bar of French chocolate though Blush

Lindor all the way!!!

ChorleyFMcominginyourears · 19/03/2019 15:58

Holdsworth, I found them on Amazon when I was looking for some naice chocolate for a weekend on the sofa in front of the TV! Also hotel chocolat and the London chocolate company, again all on Amazon!

Ballbags · 19/03/2019 16:02

Paul A Young is excellent. As is Rococo, Artisan Du'Chocolate and William Curly. All the others mentioned are a bit too down-market for proper artisan chocolate.
