Getting married tomorrow and I'm v poorly. What can I take!

Woke up yesterday with a very sore throat, can hardly swallow. Swollen glands and sore neck, headache and joints are aching! Ibuprofen isn't touching the pain from the sore throat and I'm now panicking that I'll look awful tomorrow and be too poorly to enjoy any of it Sad What can I drug myself up with??

I am so relieved this isn't I'm getting married and don't want too thread!

Good luck tomorrow and I hope you feel better very soon.

JustBloodyCold · 14/03/2019 11:29

Strongest thing you can buy OTC from a pharmacist is paracetamol and codeine. I buy it from Boots, it''s behind the counter. You can alternate every 3 hours with ibuprofen. I'd go for that I think it's your best option. Tyrozets are good as they contain an anaesthetic - there are some throat sprays that do that too.

Congratulations on your wedding and I hope you're feeling better on the day.

Peppermint tea with honey always sorts my sore throats

Go to a pharmacy and see what they recommend.

If all else fails, go to your GP and explain- they may be able to prescribe something stronger!

amymel2016 · 14/03/2019 11:33

I would call your GP, explain the situation and see if they can prescribe anything stronger, if not, see a pharmacist. Plenty of rest, fluids and sleep for you OP, if you’re poorly tomorrow I think adrenaline will get you through!

Lweji · 14/03/2019 11:33

Strong alcohol in little sips, honey and lemon, hot tea and plenty of rest and liquids. Oh, and chicken soup.

In my case I know I'd have a full blown cold on the wedding day, but that can be sorted with nose drops and ibuprofen/paracetamol.

x2boys · 14/03/2019 11:34

Can you not try and get a Gp,s appointment,or walk in centre I appreciate you may well be very busy but if it is tonsillitus you might need antibiotics if it's bacterial.

chillychicken · 14/03/2019 11:34

Oh this sounds like what I had. A few days after it started, I lost my voice Sad
What helped me was drinking plenty of water, taking cold and flu tablets and plenty of ibuprofen.
Steam.
Plenty of rest.
Strefen - it's a much stronger version of strepsils and the only thing which has ever worked for a sore throat for me.

Congratulations for tomorrow though, I hope you feel loads better!

Oh God, you poor thing!

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. Even if it hurts to swallow. Rest and relax as much as you can.

Tomorrow, you can take paracetamol and ibuprofen together for 24 hours. It is safe to do and should really help. A good decongestant spray should really help too.

Get your future partner to ring around some trusted people and get them to take on some of the heavy lifting for you tomorrow. Give everyone responsibility for one thing (and only choose people who can handle it).

Day Nurse now and Night Nurse before bed. Day Nurse again in the morning and during the day!

NakedAvenger · 14/03/2019 11:39

@CalmDownPacino berocca morning and night and another in the morning. It's fine to add more vit c eg hot water honey and lemon in between. Agree with PP don't double up on anything with the same analgesic eg lemsip and night nurse which both have paracetamol. Keep a 4 hour window between them.

Once felt then same before a big trip to NY and feared the worst but take the medications every 4 hours and top up with Manuka honey, hot water, lemon whenever you need your throat soothing, and a shot or two of whiskey Grin

Get some anti-whatsit throat spray... the stuff that helps numb it

PurpleCrazyHorse · 14/03/2019 11:41

Make sure someone at your wedding has your drugs and can keep a note of dosage times for you, so you don't have to. Best to max out on the day if you can so someone needs to be keeping an eye on what you've taken and when you're due the next dose. If you have a room at the venue, then use it for a power nap, just a sit down and/or the chance to take some drugs in peace and quiet.

Ask the vicar/venue/officiator to have a glass of water for you at the front of the service, in case your voice goes or you start coughing. Can someone at the venue sort this out for you, family member, trusted friend?

PurpleCrazyHorse · 14/03/2019 11:43

Chloroseptic throat spray tastes foul but definitely numbs things. Worth stuffing in a bag, you usually need to buy it from a chemist.

Mammajay · 14/03/2019 11:44

My doctor told me to combine 2 paracetamol with 2ibuprofen for very painful throat.

Yougotdis · 14/03/2019 11:45

This is going to be graphic. I once took berrocca as a shot every time I took a cold and flu tablets. And it worked it really did however my poop was bright orange for a week.

Justamemory · 14/03/2019 11:49

I second the PP who said garlic. I swear by it.
Garlic, fluids and sleep!
And maybe some soluble aspirin for the sore throat (gargle it before swallowing).

ASundayWellSpent · 14/03/2019 11:49

Efferelgan, fresh vitamin c or capsules if you haven't got any citrics. Really hope you feel better soon, try and sleep if you can as much as possible its the best cure

CielBleuEtNuages · 14/03/2019 11:49

Hows your nose?

I had this recently - it was tonsilitis and antibiotics cleared it up very quickly although it has now come back

Tyrozets helped the throat. But Dr said I must clear my nose (spray) 3 times a day cos its the mucus (sorry) running down the throat which can cause problems too.

LeopardPrintKnickers · 14/03/2019 11:51

You poor thing, what a shitty timing. I'm just getting over a long, drawn out bout of tonsillitis, and I found Difflam spray a lifesaver. Plenty of squirts of that will help with the painful throat/swallowing, and double up on paracetamol and ibuprofen.

Have an amazing day tomorrow!

woodcutbirds · 14/03/2019 11:51

Doesn't taste great but I really recommend a tablespoon of turmeric powder, a sliced chunk of raw ginger and a pinch of cayenne pepper, brewed together. Drink it hot (it's truly nasty cold) and stir it first to make sure you get the turmeric down. It's a powerful anti-inflammatory. I use it when my asthma meds aren't working and it really does help reduce the inflammation.

Have a very hot bath.

On the day, if you are OK with codeine based painkillers, take effervescent co-codamol. It is a powerful painkiller and slight mood uplifter. Can someone pick some up for you? Also, effervescent Vt C tablets can help you feel a bit better.

Really hope you recover by tomorrow.

Zippetydoodahzippetyay · 14/03/2019 11:53

Have skim read, apologies if repeating others.

Lemon juice (about half a large lemon) and a couple of teaspoons of honey dissolved in boiling water. It's my go to for a sore throat.

Also I believe you can take paracetamol and ibuprofen together but do check dosages as you don't want to be a zombie (or overdose).

AmethystRaven · 14/03/2019 11:54

Liberally sprinkle olbas oil around the bath/shower tray when you have a hot shower. Made me feel tons better last time I had a painful face and throat. Congratulations hope you have a wonderful day.

caringcarer · 14/03/2019 12:12

Throat numbing spray is called Chloraseptic and it will numb your throat so it does not hurt. You can get it over the counter at chemist.
