Saudi plane turns around after mother forgets baby at airport

Obviously hoping all was fine with the baby, which thankfully seems to be the case, but this came up as I was idily scrolling through my phone during a boring client meeting today and made me laugh out loud.

The air traffic controller's response, "this is totally new for us", is gold.

My DM left my sister at the co-op. That was in the 70’s though when a big Silver Cross prom would be left outside.

If it’s a Saudi family there’s a good chance they were travelling with a nanny so perhaps there was a mix up about who had which children.

7Pip · 12/03/2019 10:47

Oh God. The shame of being the first woman in the world to forget her baby and get on a flight! sounds like something I'd so

We've all done it, it's just unfortunate that it had to be so public for her!

Eastie77 · 12/03/2019 11:10

@utterly - when you say we've all done it I assume you mean this in general terms, i.e. we've all momentarily forgotten a baby somewhere. Because I really don't think many parents have left a baby behind in an airport departure lounge!

I left 4 month old DS behind at a Play and Stay once. I was with DD (2) and took her to the loo whilst leaving DS with one of the workers. DD took so long in the loo that by the time we emerged the play session was over. I walked out of the centre with her and got to the end of the road with a nagging feeling that something was 'missing'Grin. The centre worker was still cuddling DS when I got back and said her colleagues had taken bets on how long it would take for me to realise I'd left him!

Well, someone else left their child behind in the pub toilet, so just an extension I guess.

GroggyLegs · 12/03/2019 12:37

Yeah, it's not unusual (although it is extreme!)

I left my brand new DC2 in the cloakroom at DC1 nursery. I was so flustered by the tears & guilt leaving my PFB I walked out straight past, jumped in the car and drove off.

Remembered about 3 seconds after I'd pulled away. I'm forever grateful nobody else noticed Blush

I left my baby outside a shop once in t he early 90s but that is it but having to turn back an actual plane Shock

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 12/03/2019 12:51

My Mum left me , in my pram, outside Caters, Greenwich in 1965 .

Mum and Dad had been "given" my uncles dog to look after whilst he went on holiday , Said my Dad knew about it, dumped the dog food and dog and waltzed off , lol Dad, on coming home from work, had had no idea . Mum untied the dog and started to walk off and thought "I have forgot something .. the BABY" and went back . Was safe though, most parents left the prams and babies outside then,

LesLavandes · 12/03/2019 12:58

We left our baby under table sleeping in his car seat in a Thai restaurant in Miami. My husband, daughter and I were wandering through a shopping mall when a very flustered and sweaty waiter dashed up to tell us we forgot him.... He was 3 months old.... 😮

AdoraBell · 12/03/2019 13:02

My aunt left my new born cousin outside the supermarket in the days of the silver cross prams. She got home, put shopping away, sat down with a Brew and went through her shopping list because she knew she had forgotten something

MeowthThatsRight · 12/03/2019 13:09

I took ds1 to school shortly after ds2 was born. I had ds1 in a sling and I’d zip my maternity coat over the top so just head poked out as it was cold. We walked the 5 minutes to school, I went into the classroom with ds1 and the teacher congratulated me on the birth and asked if she could see the baby. I unzipped my coat to find an empty sling. I have never felt more confused in my life and just stood on the spot whimpering and turning in circles because I didn’t know what to do (very sleep deprived and on codeine due to birth injuries). Teacher very kindly pointed out that my baby was in the pram I was pushing.

Megs4x3 · 12/03/2019 13:13

Oh, bless you Miaow. I’m laughing but crying for you at the same time.

7salmonswimming · 12/03/2019 13:24

Meow I've done exactly the same thing, except the baby was at home with his Dad as a one-off! I went through the whole gamut of "oh yes isn't he cute", "huh? what? where is he?", "omg he fell out on the way", "how comes I didn't hear him cry when he fell?", "jesus I've lost my baby, wtf have I done, I'm going to jail", "ohmygod where is he [panic, panic, hyperventilating]", "ohhhhhhh..... ".

Those were the days Grin

DM had my siblings in the 1970s and said she always left them outside the post office, supermarket etc.

I'm still perplexed by the Saudi woman. Perhaps she left the baby in the airport loo as presumably the airline staff in the departure lounge who were doing final passport checks to allow passengers to board would have noticed a baby left behind in the empty lounge when everyone was on the plane

My mum left me in my pram in the middle of an aisle in Tesco.

I woke up from a nap the other day and looked in my daughter's cot beside my bed and she wasn't there. Panicking I lifted back my duvet and she wasn't in my bed either. I sat shaking before I realised it was actually the middle of the day and she was out with my parents. She's almost 2 so I don't even have the newborn, sleep deprived excuse Confused

Deathraystare · 12/03/2019 14:52

Mum left me outside the grocers. This was in the 60's (not that it matters). I was being poked and prodded by some right little shite. Mum only realised when the next door neighbour asked how I was!

TheQueef · 12/03/2019 14:55

I've left DS in the trolley seat at Asda.
And drove away Blush

BlameItOnBianca · 12/03/2019 14:56

I live in Saudi and last week travelled through Jeddah airport. Believe me, you could easily leave ANYTHING behind in the departure lounge there, utter chaos.

Gentlemanwiththistledownhair · 12/03/2019 16:41

I was on a train once between Leeds and Skipton and we were held once at a station because a woman had left her baby on the train! Confused

She had gotten off at the previous stop and we had to wait for her to get a taxi to where the train was waiting and collect her baby. The (female) train manager sounded less than impressed in her announcements...

Ninninannanoonoo · 12/03/2019 18:40

We left our son in the pub once. He was about 8 and was very excited to come to Daddy's birthday bash, but conked out under the pool table quite early. We were very pleased with ourselves for walking to the pub along dark country lanes to avoid anyone needing to drive after a few beers. Got back to our friend who was babysitting the smaller one and she said "so where is X?". Ooops Blush. Someone had to drive back and get him. It was less than 3 mins drive and there were plenty of people who weren't over the limit. Just to make us sound marginally less irresponsible, we did know the people who ran the pub and he could have spent the night there.

Babyfoal · 12/03/2019 20:48

I drove home, put my car in the garage, shut the garage door and went indoors. It was half an hour before I realised the baby was asleep in the back of the car.

Happynow001 · 12/03/2019 20:55

Wasn't there a UK politician who left his baby at a service station?

7Pip · 12/03/2019 22:04

I fell asleep in the car as a 7 year old on the way home from dance class. My sister was a newborn. I woke up a while later to an empty car and complete and utter dark. I was screaming, crying, petrified. My mother comes out about 5 minutes later frantically looking for me. I've never forgiven my mother nor my sister for that complete moment of neglect. Utter neglect Hmm Grin. I never slept in a car after that and actually developed insomnia.

I haven't forgotten mine, but I have managed to lose one in Tescos. It's the most terrifying feeling ever (she wasn't remotely perturbed. A lovely lady had found her wandering - she would have been coming up to age 2 - and said let's go find your Mammy). It's mortifying and terrifying at the same time.

7Pip · 12/03/2019 22:08

Dd had told the lady 'Mammy need butter' and there she was proudly holding the most expensive butter in the shop bless her (I had a habit of stating my list out loud to her, not realising she was taking anything in lol). I was proud of her butter finding skills! Grin
