Is it any good and will it help my DD (12) and her stupidly heavy periods?

Lovely GP prescribed it today for her and I would just like to be able to give her RL stories of how it has helped because she is just a bit down about it all at the moment.

It helped me a little. Not a great amount but did help a bit.

ittakes2 · 11/03/2019 17:00

Try acupuncture which balances hormones. My periods were super heavy - specialist described my womb as a giant womb and since I have had children suggested hysto. Three months of acupuncture every two weeks, normal periods - womb was scanned - normal womb. Sorry no experience of the drug though.

TheHatOfDoom · 11/03/2019 17:15

It helped. Taking it with mefenamic acid at the same time did more good but according to my GP it can’t have done as mefenamic allegedly doesn’t help with bleeding.

It helped me initially but seemed to become less effective over time. I had endo and fibroids so ended up having a hysterectomy.

I hope they help your DD, heavy periods are miserable.

RamblingFar · 11/03/2019 17:17

It helps. Though the life changer for me was the mooncup. Together they make it manageable most months.

YepImafraidImgivingmyopinion · 11/03/2019 17:18

It definitely helps. I can actually leave the house without worry once I've taken it.

i have also taken double doses on holiday to enable me not to have to wear black trackies at the beach.😬lifesaver!!.

Epanoui · 11/03/2019 17:26

I found it amazing when I used to need it. Genuinely life-changing for me!

BeGoodTanya · 11/03/2019 17:26

Definitely helped me. I take the optimum dose on heavy days, and it makes it manageable --sometimes it also seems to shorten my period.

Slowcookervegan · 11/03/2019 17:27

Brilliant stuff. I take on heavy period days. Helps with flow and pain.

4strings · 11/03/2019 18:11

If she’s in any way intolerant to ibuprofen she should avoid it. I am. Despite this, and despite telling the Dr there was no point. I was prescribed it and I was unbelievably ill. Sorry. It’s often peddled as a bit of a wonder drug but some GPs refuse to acknowledge that people might be intolerant.

PlatypusPie · 11/03/2019 18:13

I had it and it did make things much more manageable. No side effects that I noticed .

LifeBeginsNow · 11/03/2019 18:19

Definitely helped me pre-pregnancy. I used to suffer really badly for the first day or two. I took 2 pills as the pain got unbearable and that was all I needed. Not much help for your DD now, but having a baby has stopped just about all the pain!

pickledparsnip · 11/03/2019 18:21

Doesn't seem to work for me, but Mefenamic Acid does. Has changed my life. Seriously.

FuzzyPuffling · 11/03/2019 18:21

Sadly it didn't help me at all. But I didn't have any side effects with it, so worth a try.

NiteFlights · 11/03/2019 18:50

It helped with the heaviness, but the pain was worse for me. I don’t think this is a usual experience. Definitely worth a try.

FiveLittlePigs · 11/03/2019 18:51

I take it and it allows me to be able to leave the house. Eases the cramps too. I don't need it as often as I used to, but it was definitely a life changer for me.

CluedoAddict · 11/03/2019 19:27

It was rubbish for my Dd. She tried this and mefanamic acid. Neither helped. She is now on her 5th type of pill at age 15.

chipsandgin · 11/03/2019 19:29

Life changer for me - peri menopausal, but hopefully has the same effect at any age & with any luck here will settle down in time.

Invisimamma · 11/03/2019 19:32

It didn't do anything for me. GP said that it wouldn't affect the volume of blood loss just thin it so less clotty, I'd say that's pretty accurate of how it affected me.

I've since had an endometrial ablation and I'm waiting to see if it has been successful (this isn't suitable unless you have completed your family so not for your daughter).

I know she is very young but if is affecting her life so much would they consider a coil or pill?

TodaysFishIsTroutALaCreme · 11/03/2019 20:20

Thank you all for the replies. Have read them all to DD who is feeling much more positive about it now. She's only had two doses but it has made a significant difference. The GP said to try it for a few months and if it didn't work then she would prescribe the pill. She also told me that it might settle down in a few years. I hope so. Flowers to your daughter cluedo

It's massively helped a friend of mine who wishes she'd been.put on it years ago.

CluedoAddict · 11/03/2019 20:26

Thank you @TodaysFishIsTroutALaCreme I have always had ok periods so it's come as a shock how bad hers are. She is in constant agony for the whole week. The pills she has taken haven't helped unfortunately. Two lots made her suicidal. I think the doctor is struggling on what do try. I might ask for a gynae referral if her new ones don't work.

I hope they help your Dd.

Gellert · 11/03/2019 20:29

Absolute life changer. 2 pills 3x a day means rather than changing my mooncup every 1.5/2 hours for 48 hours I could actually go longer, 5 hours sometimes and get more sleep which makes a difference to life in general! Wish I'd tried it years ago!

Heymummee · 11/03/2019 20:30

It helped me a lot. mefenamic acid with it also helped with the unbearable pain.

donajimena · 11/03/2019 20:33

I had a copper coil and I went from lasting one hour with a super plus to being able to go for 4 hours on my heavy days.
I'm glad your daughter is seeing results.
