Bank accidentally gave me $400,000

I just had a phone call from NatWest. They've accidentally credited my account with US $400,000 (an international payment)

I first thought it was some sort of scam but I have put the phone down and called NatWest back using the phone number on their website and spoke to the same woman -so it's definitely real. She said they'd like me to reply to their email giving them written confirmation that they can take the $400,000 back.

So... of course I will send the email and give them permission but just out of interest... what would happen if I said "this all sounds like a scam" and didn't reply to their email and used the money to pay off my mortgage :D

I know, I know, I have to give it back... but why are they even asking me, why don't they just take it?

But on my phone (Samsung galaxy) it doesn't give you the option of watching the thread. Though I get the watch thread option on my home pc.

VeganCow · 11/03/2019 20:01

if you look on here there is a list of many Natwest direct branch numbers. Click 'search to find an alternative number' at the top left of the page and put in Natwest (or any other company you want a landline for)

Are you using the app or the mobile site?

I have an android phone and can watch a thread on both, unless there is a galaxy specific MN version I think you will be able to watch a thread

iklboo

Is this the new 'cancel the cheque'?

I think it is.

HerRoyalFattyness · 11/03/2019 20:39

Oh sweet Jesus.

Please tell me you've gone straight to your branch so they can put a stop on your account and cards before you lose everything

JMAngel1 · 11/03/2019 20:47

Wierdly I keep getting text messages from Natwest about my account - I don't have a Natwest account - be careful. Scam.

On tenterhooks here!

ItsHardToExplain · 11/03/2019 21:16

OP hasn’t come back. Maybe she’s off spending the money Grin

Kittykat93 · 11/03/2019 21:17

I reckon op is in the Bahamas enjoying her money

lanclass1 · 11/03/2019 21:33

The minute I read your OP my heart sank as I had heard an almost identical story a few weeks back and it was a scam 😭

I really hope that's not the case for you. Please keep us posted!

AsparagusSoup · 11/03/2019 21:36

Hope you're enjoying your $ op!

NooNooHead1981 · 11/03/2019 21:53

Any update? Has the OP returned and is all well after she saw sense?!

WTFIsAGleepglorp · 11/03/2019 21:54

Hello @Onatreebyariver, any news?

What did you do in the end?

Newbuild · 11/03/2019 23:00

Think OP had to dash to the airport, her long lost uncle who happened to be a Nigerian Prince also passed away this afternoon leaving her millions of pounds.

Update?

Onatreebyariver · 12/03/2019 06:54

UPDATE: I went to my branch yesterday afternoon and they confirmed it had happened. Someone had been doing a transfer of US $ 400,000 and it had accidentally been sent to my business euro account (and converted into euros)

I just had to sign to say I was happy for them to debit my account by the same value for them to take the funds back.

Thank you to everyone with useful advice.

More annoying is people offering bullshit advice instead of just saying PMK 👀

Onatreebyariver · 12/03/2019 06:57

For everyone who couldn’t understand how I was speaking to the same woman twice - she works at my branch. It was my branch calling me and who I called back

I then went into town and spoke to her about it in person.

It wasn’t a call centre. I had already explained that!

I wonder if some of the more aggressive or insulting posters will come back to apologise.

PrawnCruise · 12/03/2019 07:14

You may well be able to get some compensation for your time and hassle.

Depends how much you can be bothered!

ScreamingValenta · 12/03/2019 07:17

PrawnCruise Why should the bank pay for someone else's mistake?
