Bank accidentally gave me $400,000

Onatreebyariver · 11/03/2019 13:39

I just had a phone call from NatWest. They've accidentally credited my account with US $400,000 (an international payment)

I first thought it was some sort of scam but I have put the phone down and called NatWest back using the phone number on their website and spoke to the same woman -so it's definitely real. She said they'd like me to reply to their email giving them written confirmation that they can take the $400,000 back.

So... of course I will send the email and give them permission but just out of interest... what would happen if I said "this all sounds like a scam" and didn't reply to their email and used the money to pay off my mortgage :D

I know, I know, I have to give it back... but why are they even asking me, why don't they just take it?

You need to establish:

  1. Which card details/personal info did you give
  2. Did you call back on the same phone? Have you called that number since?
  3. What email address did they ask you to send it to
  4. Have you checked your account? Large sums like that from international bank accounts tend to get stopped for AML/anti terrorism checks anyway... did they say they only noticed after it credited your account?

Then Call your bank (head office number) get your card cancelled/suspended and speak to them.

Anyone else desperate for the OP to come back and tell us the outcome of this.

I'd go into the Bank in person. I wouldn't trust someone over the phone.
Also of you think about it. The odds of speaking to the same women is pretty small. Do you not have on line banking where you can check if 400k has been credited to your account.

caughtinanet · 11/03/2019 17:27

What does pmk mean please

iklboo · 11/03/2019 17:28

What does pmk mean please

Placemark, I think.

goldengummybear · 11/03/2019 17:28

I hope that OP is at the bank and has cancelled cards etc

MegaBat · 11/03/2019 17:28

Op - I don't know if anyone had mentioned this but do you think it might be a scam? Hmm

I've got that thing where you see a word so many times, it loses all its meaning

This is the new 'cancel the cheque'

Babygrey7 · 11/03/2019 17:32

Good luck, sounds scammy as hell!

caughtinanet · 11/03/2019 17:32

Placemark, I think

Thank you ikboo, no need to post that on MN Barlow, you can click on the bookmark button

BigBiteOfTheApple · 11/03/2019 17:33

Marking my place to see how this turns out...

BigBiteOfTheApple · 11/03/2019 17:34

Although I think I can guess!

BreevandercampLGJ · 11/03/2019 17:37

The type of account we have entitles us to a personal banker, we have to dial a generic number and we never get the same person twice, this is too much of a conincidence that you got the same person twice.

TealandAbs · 11/03/2019 17:38

Go into your branch to check officially, surely?

magpie24 · 11/03/2019 17:43

Money laundering red flag if you actually have it as available funds (doubtful). Heed advice of other posters and sort out in person.

YourSarcasmIsDripping · 11/03/2019 17:54

Wondering how this will turn out in the end.

MrsJDornan · 11/03/2019 17:58

Have you been into your branch?

Aridane · 11/03/2019 18:09

So is the money actually in OP’s account or just that she has been told it is?

adiposegirl2 · 11/03/2019 18:21
