Has anyone ever won lots of money through premium bonds?

I have never come across anyone who has won more than a hundred quid once in a blue moon through premium bonds, and I've won a grand total of fuck all. Has anyone ever won enough to do something nice like build an extension or go on holiday or buy a yacht?

My DH’s rich elderly aunt and uncle have hundreds of premium bonds and are always winning a few hundred here and there regularly on it, most likely owing to the amount they have and how they reinvest the winnings etc.

I have had a premium bond for 37 years and haven’t won a sausage (but I’m not that bothered).😁

My parents won £10k about 15 years ago and regularly win several lots of £25/£50 each month. We won £175.00 this month which was a nice surprise.

My partner has a good amount with premium bonds and regularly (nearly monthly) wins the small amounts. I've known him 8 years never known a high one so far.

Nope, never on premium bonds. I did know someone who won £50k on Spot the Ball 👍

My nan won £500 back in January, she was very pleased!

UrsulaPandress · 11/03/2019 06:22

I won £500 a couple of years ago. I used to win a small amount every month but my luck seems to have dried up of late.

toomuchfaster · 11/03/2019 06:26

I've had them 38 years and only won £50! Thinking of cashing them in as it looks like you only win if you have many thousands of them.

DumbledoresApprentice · 11/03/2019 06:30

I won £1k just over a year ago. I tend to win one or two £25 prizes each month.

Bathbombs · 11/03/2019 06:35

My friend at school won enough to buy a house at 18! I don’t know how many she had in the first place.
I’ve won a total of £300 in 3 years on an investement of £8k. Not sure how that compares to interest I could make elsewhere but I like the excitement of getting the notification email!

Millie2013 · 11/03/2019 06:41

OH’s grandma used to win very regularly, but never huge amounts. Apparently, if s month went by without her winning, she’d be furious

I need to sort out my recently dearly departed Dad’s. I’m not even sure he transferred his contact details over when he moved about 13 years ago 😳 I could be a millionaire (doubtful)

VictoriaBun · 11/03/2019 06:42

I win at least £25 most months, sometimes £75, never had a big win. I have £30,000 in PBs.

BarbaraofSevillle · 11/03/2019 06:46

Most people will win less than the interest they would receive in a standard savings account paying around 1 to 1.5%. It's inherent within the product. But they are useful for anyone who has used their tax free interest allowance and there is also the (very very small) chance of winning big.

My parents have had about £10k or so for years and have win £500 once, but otherwise just £25 or £50 a few times a year.

BarbaraofSevillle · 11/03/2019 06:48

Victoria By way of contrast, if that £30k was in a Marcus account, you would 'win' £37.50 every month, guaranteed.

Seekingwellness · 11/03/2019 06:53

My parents bought me a very small amount of premium bonds when i was a baby and after holding them for over 30 years i cashed them in as never won anything at all.

Can't remember the amount but it was teeny (definately less than £50) so from reading this it seems you need large amounts to win really???

SuddenlyISee · 11/03/2019 07:00

My friends brother won £1m.

Barrenfieldoffucks · 11/03/2019 07:01

I was given 500 as a child...have never won a penny 😁

UrsulaPandress · 11/03/2019 07:05

I have the app on my phone to tell me if I've won.

I managed to convince my financial adviser that PBs are effective. They are keeping pace with my stocks and shares at the moment and at least they are safe.

ShanghaiDiva · 11/03/2019 07:13

I have won 5K - not life changing and no yacht, but still nice!

MadisonAvenue · 11/03/2019 07:27

I’ve won £25 in 40+ years of owning them.

FrenchFancie · 11/03/2019 07:40

I think I read somewhere that the ‘winnings’ should give you a rate of return of about 1.5% each year, provided you invest over a certain amount (think it’s 10k but might be wrong). It’s not great but at least the capital is as safe as it gets I suppose

planesinthesky · 11/03/2019 07:46

Each individual bond has a 24,500 to 1 chance of winning a prize in each draw. So with £50 invested you might expect to win one £25 prize in the next 40 years.

But then some lucky bastard person this month won £50,000 with a £60 investment. And another won £10,000 with a £10 investment. So you never know.

DelurkingAJ · 11/03/2019 07:50

My DGM bought me £5 when I was born as a bit of a joke and I won £50 at 6 months old. Can’t really complain about having won nothing since Smile

user1471426142 · 11/03/2019 09:33

Had a few £25 and £50 prizes but nothing more exciting. A very distant relative won big in the 80s and had a knock on the door. It’s a useful place to stash cash tax free but the rates of return are generally low so it’s only really about the tiny chance of a big win.

Seekingwellness · 11/03/2019 10:49

Thanks Planes...that's a helpful breakdown as I'm useless at working statistics. I will look to buy more one day as they're a nice safe investment

Seekingwellness · 11/03/2019 10:50

Well investment not the best word given i never won anything..haha
