Has anyone ever won lots of money through premium bonds?

I have never come across anyone who has won more than a hundred quid once in a blue moon through premium bonds, and I've won a grand total of fuck all. Has anyone ever won enough to do something nice like build an extension or go on holiday or buy a yacht?

I have had £50k in mine for the last 16 months and average £65 a month winnings. Last year my return was 1.55% which is fine and i live in hope of a windfall ;-)

The other thing to bare in mind is premium bond winnings are tax free and interest in an account like Marcus is not (for tax payers anyway).

BarbaraofSevillle · 11/03/2019 11:23

But you do have a £1000 per year tax free allowance, or £500 for higher rate tax payers, so interest is effectively tax free for the majority of savers.

Individuals need to review their own circumstances. In reality its probably a good idea to spread savings across various types of savings, including premium bonds and instant access and fixed term products.

My dad won £100k about 13 years ago. He gave me and my brother £10k each. I used mine for fertility treatment and dd is 11 now 😊.

Millie2013 · 11/03/2019 20:52

Hebe, that’s lovely Shock

juneybean · 11/03/2019 20:53

£25 Once every 2 years or so. Sure I would get more in interest Hmm

melissasummerfield · 11/03/2019 20:57

I won £5000 once! And had a few hundreds here and there too Wink

Happynow001 · 12/03/2019 05:03

I win small amounts most months. This month I got two amounts of £25 which was automatically reinvested. I've also won £100 a few times in the past.

brizzlemint · 12/03/2019 05:15

Penguinpandarabbit · 12/03/2019 06:48

I have only won £25 and £50 a few times but tbf I only have £14 of them which have held since birth Grin

Penguinpandarabbit · 12/03/2019 06:50

The best return I had from regular savings was Icesave at 6.7% pa when it went under.

surreygirl · 12/03/2019 07:05

My 11yo DS has £100 worth as a christening present and has won £50 twice. Rest of the family have never won anything.

My elderly aunt, however, won £87k on Lottery and then 10 days later won £12k playing Bingo! She also regularly won on Premium Bonds..

SpreadsheetQueen · 12/03/2019 07:15

I've won £25 most months and had a fabulous month where I won £75! I have quite a lot at the moment as needed somewhere to temporarily put money for building work, where it was safe and flexible when I could remove it. I accept I'm getting less than I might get in interest, but most decent rates have some sort of tie in and no chance of that big win. I don't do the lottery, so I felt I could indulge my fantasy of winning something with PB instead.

cptartapp · 12/03/2019 07:16

I won't £1000 a few months ago off several thousand. Now have around £20k in there and win £25-£50 almost every month.

EggysMom · 12/03/2019 07:18

My son's got about £500 in bonds, he's won nothing in ten years.

LizziesTwin · 12/03/2019 07:18

Dd1 (20) won £25 yesterday. She’s won about 3 or 4 times on £1000. She’s pretty excited as she’s a student

DaisyDreaming · 12/03/2019 07:23

I looked up mine, my mums and a friends premium bonds (with their permission of course) and checked out details were up to date). I’ve had mine since I was born and never won a penny!

DaisyDreaming · 12/03/2019 07:24

My friend nor my Mum had either!

Villanellesproudmum · 12/03/2019 07:38

We have a thread going where we post each month, this loosely breaks down your odds. 79% of people have more luck than me apparently, nice to hear some good luck stories. www.moneysavingexpert.com/savings/premium-bonds-calculator/

EggysMom · 13/03/2019 19:20

I'm in the unluckiest 29.4% of people. Knowing that doesn't really help!

yearofthehorse · 13/03/2019 19:23

My parents have won £40,000, it does happen.
