I'm considering a move to Gloucester, I have a job interview to move with my company next Friday.

Was hoping for some honest advice on the areas for when looking for a house to rent for now.

Is there any areas we should absolutely avoid, and wouldn't want to live.

I've found a houses I like in Innsworth?

Will need childcare nearish by, for a one year old, I'd be working in GL1 area.

Born and raised in Gloucester. Basically the further away from the city Center you live, the better. Honestly. Innsworth is nice, to be fair.

I don't want to offend people but personally I would avoid Matson and tredworth particularly.

Tuffley is okay, some lovely houses that side of Stroud road but also a main road area with numerous schools so fairly busy traffic wise.

Hardwicke is a little more out of the way, by the m5, some new builds here and some lovely areas and houses too around The Pilot Inn/Severn vale Drive area

Quedgeley can find some reasonable houses and cul de sacs but often associated with an "older person" area

Hope this gives you an idea! Feel free to post something you find or questions. But honestly like I say, just avoid the Gloucester park and city Center area

fussychica · 09/03/2019 09:29

Have a friend in Hempstead, that's nice.

exLtEveDallas · 09/03/2019 09:42

Agree with the above and I'd also avoid Coney Hill, White City and the Holmleigh side of Tuffley.

GL1 is Barton/Tredworth/Linden I think and I wouldn't choose any of them. Innsworth is good, but commuting on the A40 is painful. Longlevens and Longford have nice areas, as do Hempstead and Churchdown.

girlinawhirl · 09/03/2019 10:01

Thank you! I'd got that idea about tredworth when I saw a house in the area.

How far would innsbrook be to linden?

I really like the house in innsbrook, and it's not a ridiculous amount to rent. We need a reasonably nice base for now, ideally for a year or so and would then be looking to buy if happy in the area/job. Would love to live further out as we've always wanted to live somewhere green and villagey.

exLtEveDallas · 09/03/2019 10:08

Innsbrook would be a hell of a commute!

Innsworth to Linden isn't far (3-4 miles?) but the A40 and the Bristol Road are a bitch in rush hour.

Belfastbird · 09/03/2019 10:16

I would agree with most of the above but definitely not about quedgeley being an old persons area! I live in Kingsway (Quedgeley) and there are at least 6 primary schools. 5 of which are rated good.i work in gl1 area and commute is fine

WeldMeDaphne · 09/03/2019 10:23

I live in Kingsway (Quedgeley) too, and tbh we love it. Loads for smaller kids (not sure about teens, but is there ever...?!). Happy to chat via DM if you want? But Innsworth/ Churchdown are nice too and longlevens/ Longford are. Our side is great too as you’re close enough to the city centre and then also to the M5 and Bristol (which is where I work) isn’t too far.

Buddywoo · 09/03/2019 10:26

I lived in the Frampton on Severn area, lovely and green and villagey. A bit further out but an easy commute to Gloucester.

longearedbat · 09/03/2019 10:27

If you like villages there are some lovely ones south of Gloucester in the severn Vale, (Hardwicke, Epney, Saul, Frampton on Severn) also around Stonehouse/Stroud (Leonard Stanley, Kings Stanley, Selsley and many more).
Quegegeley is very handy for Gloucester with loads of large supermarkets and good bus connections. I, too, would also avoid Matson and Tredworth! Parts of Tuffley are very peaceful, but the further out the better, i.e. on the Stroud side. Even if you went out as far as Dursley you have still got an easy run into Gloucester on the M5, but rush hour traffic might be a bit off putting for you.

WhenTheDragonsCame · 09/03/2019 12:14

I live in Barton and have found it fine living here for the last 3.5 years but can see why others would say avoid it.

My friend lives in Kingsway and it looks lovely there. The only issue is getting into a good secondary school can be difficult. It is a bit too far for Severn Vale in Quedgely so the only option really, apart from grammar, is Beaufort which doesn't have a particularly good reputation or travelling much further.

My cousin lives in Longlevens which seems nice. It's quite close to town and not to far from the motorway.

My auntie lives in Highnam which is lovely but very expensive.

There are some nice places in Kingsholm and the primary is rated excellent. My DDs go there and they really like it and are progressing well.

Good luck with your interview!

rallytog1 · 09/03/2019 14:12

I lived in Kingsholm for a few years and loved it. Walking distance to city centre but lovely wide tree lined streets and big old houses. I always felt really safe there. Wouldn't go near any other other area that's near the centre though.

girlinawhirl · 09/03/2019 15:12

Thanks all, we're spending the day having a look around Gloucester today.

We're quite limited with renting as looking privately as we have a dog, the house in innsbrook is really nice for someone agreeing a pet so very keen on it.

Fingers crossed for this job, as really would love to make this move.

heartshapedknob · 09/03/2019 15:55

I have friends living in Innsworth who like it well enough, there are frequent buses into the centre if needed too and it has a good secondary school nearby. Good luck with your interview!

MulderitsmeX · 09/03/2019 16:27

Where do you live now?
Gloucester town is really down at heel and nothing really to do.
The suburbs like hardwicke and quedgeley are ok but very dull

Frampton is a beautiful village, dont really know innsworth but it seems nice.

Overall wouldn't move back there although there are a good number of grammar schools which might appeal in the future

ChicCroissant · 09/03/2019 16:33

Do you drive OP, because that makes some areas more manageable than others - the bus services can be frequent but don't connect unless you go to Gloucester or Cheltenham!

Don't know anything about Innsworth tbh, but Churchdown/Longlevens/Hucclecote and some parts of Brockworth are nice and near the city centre.

Good luck with the job interview!

Jamhandprints · 09/03/2019 16:38

I lived in Gloucester for 3 years. Its a bit of a strange place. If you go into the centre after 8pm there is literally no one around, empty pubs and restaurant.
There is massive homelessness, crime and drugs.
People are quite friendly on the surface but not very accepting of newcomers.

Jamhandprints · 09/03/2019 16:38

Cheltenham and Stroud are quite nice though.

girlinawhirl · 19/03/2019 08:12

So I got the job!!!!!!

Now for the really important questions; where can I get my brows threaded, are there are Asian beauticians? Or will I be getting them done when I'm the Midlands?

I can't live without LVL lashes and gel nails any recommendations?

OP posts:
ChicCroissant · 23/03/2019 10:59

Congratulations! There are threading places here, one in Gloucester market I think.

girlinawhirl · 23/03/2019 20:10

I did spot a threading place today, I'm very happy to say!!

Hoping to be accepted for a house in Newent we're in love with, it has a lovely village vibe without being too far from work and the house is fab.

Thanks for the congrats

Agree with the posters also Longford is nice,Im a Cheltenham lady x

user1497997754 · 23/03/2019 20:55

Look at the Cheltenham side of Gloucester also Churchdown x

PigeonofDoom · 23/03/2019 21:07

Churchdown is pleasant but extremely dull. Massive place but there is only a handful of shops, two rubbish pubs and no where to socialise. It’s the size of a town with none of the amenities. No swimming pool, cafes, restaurants, cinema, decent shops etc.
Newest is a better bet- it has an annual onion festival! Plus it’s near the Forest of Dean, which is beautiful.

VanessaShanessaJenkins · 23/03/2019 21:19

Churchdown is hardly dull! I've never seen a community centre so well used and the church is so busy there are serious parking issues in surrounding roads on a Sunday. Children from Cheltenham and Gloucester use the skatepark in churchdown (which also hosts competitions) and the park next to it hosts multiple fun days each year as well. Not to mention you are surrounded by countryside and the lovely walk up chosen hill with super views.

The old elm is a lovely pub and though not to my taste the hare and hounds is always busy.

It doesn't have things like a swimming pool, no. But I can get to Gloucester or Cheltenham in under 10 mins!
People who live in quedgley live further from the centre of of glos than churchdown residents.

Quite a number of children from Gloucester and Cheltenham attend the 2 secondaries in churchdown as they are the closest to them which might be a consideration if you have children.

Longlevens, longford and brockworth are nice if you want glos but be careful with flooding issues!

DareDevil223 · 23/03/2019 21:25

Longlevens and Churchdown are both lovely (I've lived in both) Brockworth and Hucclecote are nice too. Gloucester isn't as bad as it's painted and Cheltenham is lovely.

There are some very good schools when your DC is old enough especially in Churchdown.
