What do you watch with your early primary DCs?

DS is at that stage (just turned 7) where he needs slightly less sleep and we let him choose a couple of TV programmes to watch before bed.
I'm getting a bit bored of Octonauts and Dora...
We tried Strictly when it was on but no real interest and we do like Sarah Jane Adventures but it's a bit scary for bedtime!
Other than Hey Duggee and DangerMouse what appeals to the adults and less sophisticated children in your house?

After 7 we do switch off kids TV and watch soaps or whatever is on. Obviously keep an eye on the soaps and don't let them watch anything that's not age appropriate. Our two like bake off and things like that too.
I get fed up of kids TV being on.

BlueMerchant · 08/03/2019 20:17

My dd 8 loves nature programmes- vet type things and Love of dogs. If they on a bit late I record them for the next night.

Doodlekitty · 08/03/2019 20:17

We try and do something vaguely educational. Horrible histories was a real hit. Blue planet has been good. Myth busters junior is good too. Walking with dinosaurs. That kind of thing. Ds is 6

claracluck78 · 08/03/2019 20:17

Our twins are 5 and they are currently loving Horrible Histories (both oh and I are history grads). Otherwise they may have something like the Zoo, Wild Kratts, Go-Jetters or Octonauts.

I secretly like all of these!

Vinorosso74 · 08/03/2019 20:21

There's some decent stuff on CBBC-Horrible Histories, Operation Ouch, Pets Factor (bit of education aimed at kids) and less educational; DD loves The Next Step. She does watch stuff on general channels too and has recently developed a liking for snooker of all things. She's not long turned 9.

drspouse · 08/03/2019 20:23

I think Walking with Dinosaurs would be a hit, will try that.
Haven't tried Horrible Histories so that's a good one, it's a bit like Swashbucklers? Kind of?
I am very knowledgeable about marine life and world landmarks now though...

Some of he CBBC programs that our 7yr old likes that we don't mind watching are Operation Ouch, Dengineers and The Pets Factor. Diddy tv is also a hit but not so much with the adults 😂

Phineyj · 08/03/2019 20:25

DD absolutely adores Operation Ouch and it is really quite educational. I've learnt more human biology from it than I ever did at school. And Dr Chris and Dr Xand are easy on the eye

AprilSpring · 08/03/2019 20:25

‘Do you know’ is a big it here!
And ‘say yes to the dress’ We call it the weddding dress show!

Rockbird · 08/03/2019 20:32

My 7 year old loves Call the Midwife, Downton and Bake Off. We also watch a couple of travel vloggers on YouTube which is generally our last thing at night treat. Obviously I censor the grittier parts of CTM but she's very au fait with childbirth etc Grin. Other than that she watches Barbie crap on kids YouTube but I don't get involved in that.

Doobydoobeedoo · 08/03/2019 20:36

Horrible Histories is like an educational version of Monty Python. It's a big favourite in our house.

Another vote too for Operation Ouch and Pets Factor.

drspouse · 08/03/2019 20:39

Rockbird I don't think he's quite at the stage of those programmes yet!
Thankfully not into Barbie crap either.
He has some SEN but is definitely ready for more than Cbeebies and so are we

Dengineers is good and inside the factory

wendz86 · 08/03/2019 20:56

Operation ouch and the next step. We also watch something on sat nights together, was the greatest dancer recently and now altogether now.

minipie · 08/03/2019 21:12

Some good ideas here thanks!

I will add Dragons and The Worst Witch.

itsboiledeggsagain · 08/03/2019 21:14

Apparently blue Peter is good

MrsMartinRohde · 08/03/2019 21:20

My 7 year old turned round and started watching when I had last year's Celebrity Bake Off on (couple of weeks ago on 4OD). He was drawn in because he recognised Harry Hill from You've Been Framed (hasn't known the rest of the celebs). He loved it - particularly when things went wrong, so we made a point of watching the rest of the series together.

ArtisanPopcorn · 08/03/2019 21:28

@rockbird tell me about these travel vloggers?

My almost 5 year old loves Full House on Netflix. Terrible but still preferable to Paw Patrol.

ThursdayLastWeek · 08/03/2019 21:30

We watch the Wallace & Gromits before bed.
My eldest is too old for CBeebies a lot of the time but not ready for CBBC yet.

Amummyatlast · 08/03/2019 21:35

DD (5) is currently enjoying master chef. She also likes Bake Off.

Oswin · 08/03/2019 21:39

We love horrible histories. Dd had no interest in history before we watched it. Now she is obsessed. She watches anything with Lucy Worsley too now.
Also love the dumping ground.

Figgygal · 08/03/2019 21:43

My 7yo likes spongebob, bean animated series, Wallace and gromit, tom and jerry

He will still watch all of the Julia Donaldson cartoons with his brother too

heymammy · 08/03/2019 22:08

Ds is nearly 7 and likes The Simpsons, Ninja Warrior, Total Wipeout and Snooker! Also, pretty much any quiz/game show.

Mumshappy · 08/03/2019 22:12

Dd8 is obsessed with full house on netflixs. I also really enjoy it.

according · 08/03/2019 22:13
