What age did you stop listening to Radio 1 (If you have)?

I listened to Radio 1 in my teens and my 20s, essential selection and mix particularly, and a bit in my 30s. I'm in my early 40s now and switched over from 6 music when Iggy came on tonight and it's good. Just wondering is radio 1 still 'down with the kids ' and if you still listen and enjoy it now?

I last listened to it voluntarily when I was about 22.

If I ever hear it now, it's just an annoying noise!

Sure sign I am now officially an old fogey, I guess!

ShowOfHands · 08/03/2019 19:30

I've never listened to it and I also know 60+ yr olds who exclusively listen to it. Do what makes you happy. Doesn't matter if it's cool, whatever that means.

Whynham · 08/03/2019 19:30

Hated it even in my teens and twenties.

I stopped aged 18. It's been Radio 4 ever since.

Bluearsedfly36 · 08/03/2019 19:31

I'm 36 and listen to nothing but radio one.

chipsandpeas · 08/03/2019 19:31

im 42 and still listen occasionally but at the same time i also occasionally listen to radio 2 and local radio stations, i flick between them all to find music i want to hear when im driving if i cant be arsed hooking up my phone to the car

starzig · 08/03/2019 19:31

When i got into music

Blondielongie · 08/03/2019 19:31

I listen when radio 2 gets a bit boring. I switch over to radio 1 on a Friday as I hate serious jockin with a passion.

But when they play the music that isn't really music (sound like my dad) I switch to the local radios and suffer the adverts.
I'm 29

I’m 28 and still listen, it’s the only bbc radio I can stand and I don’t want the tv on all day. BBC 2 and 6 have such a random selection of music I want to switch it off for most songs, don’t like sport or classical, and I don’t mind some bits on radio 4 but I always seem to tune in half way through. They need a bbc version of radio x IMO.

SileneOliveira · 08/03/2019 19:32

Mid 20s. Now I listen exclusively to podcasts on the car radio. have no interest in music of any description.

The kids prefer Capital to Radio1.

Sparklingbrook · 08/03/2019 19:33

I listen to Greg James every morning. I have always listened to it since being a teenager when Mike Read did it.

ps1991 · 08/03/2019 19:33

Probably about 18/19 when Chris Moyles left the breakfast show. I prefer radio2 now but DH has radio1 on in his car!

MazDazzle · 08/03/2019 19:34

I’m in my late 30s and listen to it.

I work in a Secondary School and have never met a pupil who listens to radio 1! I’ve asked them plenty of times.

Occasionally I feel like I’m too old, but haven’t found another radio station that I like. Whenever one of my favourite DJs moves over to Radio 2, I give them a try, but bizarrely they sound so different on R2! Anyone else find that? It’s like a sanitised version of radio 1.

Sparklingbrook · 08/03/2019 19:36

Greg James getting out of that escape room was radio gold. I was completely hooked.

Cumberlover76 · 08/03/2019 19:37

I've always been into music. Big into clubbing in my youth. Used to love Pete Tongs programmes when I was younger and was pleasantly surprised by liking it tonight. Love radio 4 generally and 6 on a Friday and Saturday afternoon and eve. Just wondered if youf still listen to it as me and my friends did.

I'm 37 and Radio 1 is still my station of choice. I like moving on with music instead of getting stuck back in time. Some of it is terrible but it's always been so.

There was a momentary pause when DH got me a digital radio for Christmas and I found Absolute Radio 90s. It was like being transported back to my youth. Amazing. Then I started to feel a bit old...

Stompythedinosaur · 08/03/2019 19:38

I listened into my 30s but I left with Chris Moyles.

ASqueakingInTheShrubbery · 08/03/2019 19:38

Once I stopped caring about the Top 40 and came to terms with the fact that I like what I like and I don't mind if it's not fashionable. About 15/16 I think. I remember listening to the charts while doing homework in early teens but my main association with doing my GCSE coursework is a couple of Nick Cave albums.

Cumberlover76 · 08/03/2019 19:41

I suppose I've only really been into the later evening stuff at the weekend that more reflected what I was listening to when I went out. Without wanting to sound a twat I reckon I've always had a pretty cool musical taste with regards to dance music and the stuff in tonight seems similar to what I was listening to 15 years or so ago. Has music in some areas not massively changed?

cakesandphotos · 08/03/2019 19:42

About 22. Radio 1 was crap after 7pm so I switched over to radio 2 and then didn’t switch back

Cumberlover76 · 08/03/2019 19:43

I've never really been bothered about top 40, only perhaps to be amused when an underground tune broke through. But later night weekend stuff would have some excellent djs on at times.

Some d'n'b and ShyFX tonight.

About 30. I tried to listen to radio 2 but after the breakfast show and the Popmaster quiz I got bored. The music is awful. Then I discovered 6 Music and that's all I listen to now.

Sharptic · 08/03/2019 19:49

I'm nearly 40. Used to enjoy listening to nick grimshaw's breakfast show and the chart music on radio one on my commute.

Up until my old banger car recently decided to no longer pick up radio one or two signal, I miss it. All I can tune into is gem am, capital and smooth 😭

SellFridges · 08/03/2019 19:50

I still listen and I’m 38. I don’t always enjoy the music but the DJ’s are a different class and I can’t abide adverts.

I like 6Music but can’t listen all day as I’m not cool enough to appreciate the music.

Radio 2 also had great DJ’s now with Zoe Ball and Sara Cox but the playlist is still designed for my mother.
