What age did you stop listening to Radio 1 (If you have)?

I listened to Radio 1 in my teens and my 20s, essential selection and mix particularly, and a bit in my 30s. I'm in my early 40s now and switched over from 6 music when Iggy came on tonight and it's good. Just wondering is radio 1 still 'down with the kids ' and if you still listen and enjoy it now?

Last time I listened Oasis and Blur were on the playlist.

topcat2014 · 08/03/2019 19:54

Exclusively radio 4 since about 35

Ikanon · 08/03/2019 19:57

37 and it's mainly Radio X because of Chris Moyles but I do like Greg James and Scott Mills

I used to listen to Dance Anthems way back when...

megletthesecond · 08/03/2019 20:02

Still listen to it now and I'm 44. New music is still worth listening to.

Radio 4 in the evenings though. I can only cope with 30 mins of Annie Mac, I'm too old for cool-ness.

IndigoSpritz · 08/03/2019 20:25

Early teens. I was used to listening to Radio 2 from my preschool years as my Mum always had it on at home. Terry Wogan, Jimmy Young and Pete Murray, in that order. Radio 2 was my most listened to station for years but I don't listen to the radio very often nowadays. By the time I was 17, I was completely done with both Radio1 and Top Of The Pops.

MillytantForceit · 08/03/2019 20:30

I've never listened to it voluntarily. The only people on it I ever liked were all sacked: Kenny Everett, Johnnie Walker and Andy Kershaw.

I understand the average age of a current listener is around 47.

crunchie12 · 08/03/2019 20:34

About 26!

crunchie12 · 08/03/2019 20:35

It's radio 2 or the local one in our house

babysharkah · 08/03/2019 21:04

Never listened to it. I used to listen to capital, still do sometimes and more and more r2.

BibbityBobbityEars · 08/03/2019 21:19

18 (1990)

RusholmeRuffian · 08/03/2019 21:21

When John Peel died I guess

lljkk · 08/03/2019 21:22

I'm 51 & still turn on R1 sometimes.
Can't stand DJ blather, omg, so tedious, but I can like the music.

ooooohbetty · 08/03/2019 21:22

Still listen and I'm very old (late 50's). They'd probably block me somehow if they knew Smile

lotusbell · 08/03/2019 21:27

When Mark and Lard left.

Shambalawadeewadee · 08/03/2019 21:28

When Chris Moyles left. So I was in my late 30s. Couldn’t stand Nick Grimshaw so that was that. Hardly listen to any modern music now, I’ve switched to classic FM or audio books. I can’t quite bring myself to tune into Radio 4 on the way to work in case I accidentally learn something. There’s no need for that sort of self improvement so early in the morning...

lotusbell · 08/03/2019 21:31

Sorry, misread the post. I suppose in my 20s, can't pinpoint an exact age bit I'd say before I had my son who is 12 in a few days so before I was mid 20s. I'm not as pretentious about music as I was in my teens and early 20s and don't listen to music much for pleasure any more, although we always have the radio on at work and listen to Heart. In my teens/20s I was obsessed with music. I don't like a lot of what Radio 1 play now!

SurgeHopper · 08/03/2019 21:31

I never did

I stopped mid 20s, switched to Xfm (now Radio X), now 6Music. Think my username may give a clue to my age.

Jsmith99 · 08/03/2019 21:35

Mid 20s, around the end of the Britpop era. It felt like the end of the line for proper bands.

I gave up on music radio and moved on to R4 & 5 Live for sport. Their coverage of the World Cup last summer was fantastic.

safariboot · 08/03/2019 21:41

Never. In my teens it was brmb, which then namechanged to free radio. Then at uni I got more into Planet Rock. Into my late 20s and now my 30s it's Absolute, Absolute Classic Rock, or Classic FM if I'm in the mood for that.

In my youth Radio 1 came across as an old person's idea of what young people liked. The commercial stations were where it was really at.

MazDazzle · 08/03/2019 21:44

Radio 2 also had great DJ’s now with Zoe Ball and Sara Cox but the playlist is still designed for my mother.

This. With bells on.

Radio 2’s playlist is bonkers: a Broadway hit, followed by a song from the ‘50s, then a bit of Pink for good measure. I wish the DJs could pick their own playlists. And like another poster, I could gladly punch the serious jocking twat.

Cuddlysnowleopard · 08/03/2019 21:46

I was 41. I used to switch between radio 1 and 4. Then, I just had a moment when I though, nope, this is crap.

I listen to radio 6 pretty much exclusively now.

stopdropandroll · 08/03/2019 21:48

early 30s, now i have radio 4 on in the car and 6music at home.
