Current Passport Renewal times

Wondered if anyone has applied recently and how long it took? Straight forwards adult renewal here and only sent a few days ago - apparently it's 'in the queue to be processed'.

I'm hoping to fly at the end of April but won't book anything until I have the passport in my hands and find out what's happening with Brexit.

You should receive it in a couple of weeks. They don't take very long.

MrsAmaretto · 08/03/2019 12:16

Do you need to send your old passport away when applying for a new one?

DownRightAmazing · 08/03/2019 12:18

I know they don't usually bigandbumpy but it does vary thru the year so wondered about the current time scale.

Yes you do MrsAmaretto mine was received yesterday and I didn't join the processing queue until they'd received it.

I got my kids done a month back and they were back within the week for renewals! X

bigandbumpy · 08/03/2019 12:23

I deal with business travel passport applications on a daily basis, personal passports are processed quicker.

ThomasRichard · 08/03/2019 12:24

This website takes crowd sourced data to give the current average processing times: www.passportwaitingtime.co.uk. It says 7 days for an adult renewal at the moment.

I renewed mine in February and it took 8 days from completing the application only, sending it my old passport and getting the new one back.

DownRightAmazing · 08/03/2019 12:25

Ooh thanks ThomasRichard that's a fab resource - I shall bookmark that for next time :)

Ten days from applying online - I had new passport 7 days after they received the old one and that was this week 👍

MyDcAreMarvel · 08/03/2019 12:28

Passport site crashed today thanks to media hysteria so it may be delayed.

pinkcardi · 08/03/2019 12:29

Kid renewal took less than a week a month ago

flitwit99 · 08/03/2019 12:31

I sent ds's off the end of last week and haven't even had a "we are processing your application" text. We were hoping to fly at Easter but haven't booked anything yet.

SeeYouLaterUserData · 08/03/2019 12:34

Hi OP just done a renewal within last month. Paper application, used Check & Send and had to send in supporting docs (which is why I used check & send).

Docs back on POST DATE + 7 working days

New passport back on POST DATE + 8 working days

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 08/03/2019 12:37

Last month dh got his in a week, mine took two weeks.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 08/03/2019 12:38

We did ours online, a very simple process.

MrsScamander · 08/03/2019 12:40

Just had mine reviewed, took about a week to come back. DPs was a renewal with new picture and his also took about a week.

Thesunrising · 08/03/2019 12:42

That website is amazing! We took our son’s passport in for renewal yesterday - and they advised a current wait of 3 weeks - let’s see who is right!

needthisthread · 08/03/2019 12:45

I would be concerned that the media has well and truly fucked up the quick turn around. It's panic passport renewal week.

DownRightAmazing · 08/03/2019 12:45

Interesting thanks. I did the application online - was very quick and easy. I needed a new photo which I had taken in a booth in Tesco and then used the digital code to upload to passport website. I am slightly concerned about the photo aspect; I had it done in a booth and followed all the rules so thought it looked fine but when I uploaded it to the website it said that it wouldn't be approved 'automatically' due to them not being able to find the outline on my face! It was a normal photo with good definition between the white background and my brown haired-head. No hair was in front of my face. So anyway I'm hoping that was just a computer glitch and won't affect anything :)

I submitted mine Friday at the post office. Got a text Wednesday advising it should be with me by 27/03 unless I was contacted for more information. Today I recieved a text that my new passport would be delivered within the next few days and supporting documents (my old passport) would arrive separately.

So very fast for straight forward renewal (and I’m naturalised citizen too so was very pleased with turn around time).

AdoreTheBeach · 08/03/2019 12:53

I should add, mine was paper because I have significantly changed from last photo. DH renewed his a week before me (two weeks ago) on line. Same type of photo you used. His came in a week (lat week).

MaddieElla · 08/03/2019 13:06

Did mine yesterday as we're flying in June and then immediately read the PANIC RENEW TODAY article in the papers. Wish I'd waited.

But I renewed husband's last month and it was back within a week.

BoogleMcGroogle · 08/03/2019 13:45

We submitted our kids' renewals last Tuesday via post office check and send service. They arrived today. 10 days seems pretty efficient!

SeeYouLaterUserData · 08/03/2019 13:56

The panic is not the fault of the media, by the way. And I don't think many people understand the issue in full.

For me, as someone who renewed early last time, I got a passport with end validity date 10y 9months from the start date. I could use that to travel within EU for the full 10y 9 months...right up until the printed expiry date.

The changes mean my printed expiry date is stated an astonishing 15 months AFTER the effective expiry date for valid EU travel under no deal rules, because the extra add on 9 months are also not accepted as valid in addition to the 6 month buffer standard.

Couldn't quite believe this until I checked using the passport office date validity tool but it's true!

I'm assuming this is contributing to the panic.

DownRightAmazing · 08/03/2019 14:05

I haven't seen any newspapers today but the reason I am renewing now is because the government sent me a text advising me to check if my passport would be valid in the event of no deal. I renewed early (nearly) 10 years ago because of getting married/changing my name and they credited me 9 months - but those aren't valid in Europe in the event of no deal. If the newspapers have finally spelled this out for everyone then fair enough tbh. Fingers crossed I got in there just early enough - I've been planning this since Jan but just returned from a holiday at half term.

Did you get a text to say it had been received? Posted mine first class on Tuesday but haven't yet heard anything.
Panicking about them getting lost because we do have a trip booked at Easter.
