How do you clean your glasses?

Just gone from never wearing glasses to needing them full time. My twins were quite scared of them initially but one is now very interested and keeps taking them off me and putting them back on me - now my lenses are all smeary with greasy toddler finger prints and the cloths that came with them only smear it around!

Is there some product I should use to get greasy toddler finger prints off them? His twin may need glasses soon so suspect I’ll have more trouble there as well!

You can buy a kit from the sunglass hut, it has a little screwdriver, a Lens cleaner and a cloth, when the spray runs out you just take it back to the sunglass Hut and they refill it for free for you, x

KinkyHair · 08/03/2019 13:02

I also use fairy liquid and warm water.

Bananasarenottheonlyfruit · 08/03/2019 13:04

Wipe them on my top, like most others. Hasn’t caused any perceptible damage to any pair of glasses in the nearly 40 years since I started wearing them full time.

Windolene spray and kitchen roll, specs cleaner costs a fortune and seems to run out all the time

EBearhug · 08/03/2019 13:06

I tend to wash them when I have a bath or shower, but also a spray and cloth when needed.

babysharkah · 08/03/2019 13:10

liquid soap and water

ChesterGreySideboard · 08/03/2019 13:12

Please don’t use washing up liquid or window cleaner. It’ll take the coating off.

Either cleaning spray and a proper cloth or the individual wipes.

Fernie6491 · 08/03/2019 13:36

I was advised never to use tissues or kitchen paper on my specs. It causes minute scratches on the surface, which although not noticeable at first, become obvious when it's too late!
Like a PP, I will often wear them when showering, it gives them a really good gentle clean, not only the lenses, but the whole frame, especially around the hinges which can get a bit grubby from make-up residue!

Ecloth. Pefect. DH is fussier had a spray and little cleaning cloth. DS on whatever he has to hand

SinkGirl · 08/03/2019 14:07

I had no idea this would be so controversial 😂

I’ll buy a proper spray. I have spent the day discouraging them from touching, but since they were scared at first it seemed a good idea to let him carefully explore them a bit.

Buy a BIG lens cloth, they are available in lots of sizes, keeps mine clean, I do my sons under the tap, dry and then BIG lens cloth (can you tell i love my BIG lens cloth Grin)

eurochick · 08/03/2019 15:19

The cleaners all bring me out in spots on the bridge of my nose. I just rinse mine under the tap each night and dry with a towel. Or give them a rub on my sleeve when out and about!

1vandal2 · 08/03/2019 15:25

Do not put them in the dishwasher or shower! Again causes damage to the coating!!

I am wondering how many DO/OO/OA's are on here 😀

AhFeck · 08/03/2019 15:37

I did used wash them with special lens cleaning spray and spend the next 75286394 hours trying to make them streak free with the useless cloths the opticians gave me

However I have found that DS's linen material curtains do an excellent job so I now do that instead.

Iruka · 08/03/2019 15:42

I've worn glasses for about 35 years and pretty much only clean them with the hem of my tshirt. Every now and then I wash them with a teeny bit of fairy liquid and lots of water and have a spare toothbrush which I use to get around the nose pieces (not on the glass at all).

Never had a problem with scratches or coating wearing off.

LBOCS2 · 08/03/2019 15:46

I huff and wipe on clothes.

After my shower, when they're all steamed up from the hot water, I wipe them on the towel. That's their gold standard clean 😁

I clean my daughter's with Tesco lens wipes and then a bit of kitchen roll. She goes for the quick wipe with her pj top in the morning.

cannycat20 · 08/03/2019 16:56

I love the little microfibre cloths you can get from a company called Centro Style (I think they're Italian or Swiss) - I came across them in an optician years ago and they're brilliant, you can also wash them at 60 degrees C and that rejuvenates them. You might be lucky to find a local optician who supplies them, or I think you can still get them directly. (I've been wearing glasses since I was 8 and I'm now 50 and they're the best I've found so far.)

Ronsters · 08/03/2019 17:03

I use some wipes I buy from Bodycare, 50 for 99p.
