Neighbour has taped over our security light!!

We have had issues with our neighbours in the past, mainly being very nosy, and quite demanding of us (for example asking us to not use a certain part of our washing line incase the clothes flap in the wind and set of our security light, moaning when we had our fence replaced, at their request) the list goes on...but they have definatley got worse since they retired.

So my husband fitted a new security light to our back gardens shed last weekend as ours was broke. We have come home today and it has been taped over in green frog tape!!! To make matters worse we are suspicious that he had actually gone into our shed and used our frog tape, as it looks like things have been disturbed in there. The sheds on our street are all brick built and have the same fitting key....

I'm absolutely furious and don't no ow to proceed!

Obviously if the light has been going off and disturbing him sleeping (his bedroom is at the back of the house) if he had of told me I would of adjusted it/turned it off.

We had the same issue with the house to the back of ours. Their security light is very bright, and points in the direction of our bedroom window. We bought a blackout roller blind, so between that and our curtains, we no longer have an issue. It wouldn't have occurred to me to expect them to do anything about it.

For the PP saying security lights are pointless, not always the case. We have a security light also (it's pointed downwards at the patio not outwards over the whole garden); we have it so if something/someone is in the back garden, we get a clear image in the cameras. They do film in the dark, but not well enough that you'd ever be able to use the footage to identify a person accurately.

I will confess I hate motion activated security lights - they are very intrusive.

I would never install one, and have had to get black out blinds to block out my neighbours.

However, your neighbour should have spoken to you about this instead of trespassing.

PrettyAmazingGrace · 07/03/2019 21:24

@Jjacob - I think we're the only ones who've identified the key issue here Grin

PrettyAmazingGrace · 07/03/2019 21:26

@Jjacobb I meant

How do people demist their windscreens without having the car idling?

A cloth.

Twerking9til5 · 07/03/2019 21:29

“the blasted flood lights which disturb my sleep, prevent me ever seeing stars and are totally unnecessary.”

They are killing off bats, too. Something to do with bats not getting enough dark to feed in, and getting disorientated.

He and his son (especially) do sound horrible. And it is a crime to go on your shed.

On the whole I think his aggressive son, barking dog and trespassing are worse than your light and engine running.

Whatdoyouknowwhenyouknownowt · 07/03/2019 21:33

No-one is covering themselves in glory here.

My neighbours have lit up their garden and I hate it but I like them, so am shutting up. I miss my dark garden tho.

Bluntness100 · 07/03/2019 21:33

I don't understand, if you never leave your washing out at night, what's the relevance of him asking you to not use the line as it was setting the light off. It wouldn't go off in the day, and if it did, no one would care so it doesn't make sense.

JaneEyre07 · 07/03/2019 21:33

Our neighbours at the bottom of our garden have one that shines straight into our bedroom at night. We did ask if they could change the settings so it wasn't on for 15 minutes when it was set off or change the angle which in their defence they did try, but it still disturbed us so we got a blackout blind.

They are a pretty anti social invention. Could you use a different sort of light? Or offer to put them a blind up if you feel you have to have it.

Ali1cedowntherabbithole · 07/03/2019 21:39

So is your security light shining in your neighbour's garden?

Aridane · 07/03/2019 21:40

I salute your neighbours!

MrsMoastyToasty · 07/03/2019 21:48

Get an alarm for your shed.

Budsbegginingspringinsight · 07/03/2019 21:48

Check law on lights. I have a feeling it s not supposed too reach into neighbours garden.

Budsbegginingspringinsight · 07/03/2019 21:50

We have one that affects us.
New led type. Harsh lights like prison camp. nasty.

Gibble1 · 07/03/2019 21:53

Flashing lights are annoying. So much so that councils have now got legislation to say that your neighbours have the right to not be disturbed by your security lights.
However, nobody should be going into your garden to tape up the light.
Cars being run are annoying and illegal. But you’ve stopped that now.
Dogs barking are annoying and councils have legislation saying you don’t have to put up with annoying noise too. Don’t suppose they bark when the light keeps going on and off do they? Mine would go bananas at that.

Moorfields · 07/03/2019 21:53

Can you get motion activated water sprinklers? That would be cool if they turned on while the neighbour was sneaking into your garden.

iknowimcoming · 07/03/2019 22:00

I'm a bit confused why you'd go to the bother of installing a new security light when there's little or nothing stopping people getting into your garden and your shed unless I've misunderstood and the neighbour is some kind of cat burglar?

Singlenotsingle · 07/03/2019 22:09

Motion activated security lights are the work of the devil. Funny how the owners of the said lights never angle them so that they shine into their own bedroom windows!

Jon65 · 07/03/2019 22:34

I would be more worried that it's somebody planning a burglary taping over the motion detection sensor which i believe is quite common.

safariboot · 07/03/2019 22:48

As a PP mentioned, the neighbour may be a likely suspect but do you have any evidence it was then.

Outside lights should be pointed down, not out. If they're pointed out they're worse than useless, as they'll dazzle any onlookers who might otherwise spot a crook. And if cats are setting off motion sensors then the sensors need fixing.

Our neighbours fitted their light above their drier vent, so it'd go on and off whenever they ran their dryer. Idiots. I was glad when the bulb died and they didn't bother replacing it.

PlatypusPie · 07/03/2019 23:01

I used to idly muse about getting an old fashioned catapult to take out the really irritating security light of the house that backs to us, which was activated by a leaf drifting past or a caterpillar staring at it. Bloody thing. Horrible lot refused to see anyone’s objections to it( not just ours , it was truly bright and lit up about 4 houses. ) They moved and the new people ( hurrah ! ) obviously didn’t like their own rooms being lit up like the centre of the sun and removed it - Happy Day !

AllInADay · 07/03/2019 23:02

I must admit, I have to bite the duvet to stop myself going over and smashing our neighbour's security light with a hammer. It shines in through our bedroom window all night. It seems to have run out of steam now, thankfully. Since they moved in they haven't stopped bulldozing, building, renovating, sawing, chopping, using the narrow lane we live on as their own personal driveway and generally being a pain. I can assure you, when something like that has been going on for a couple of years, it makes you slightly on the homicidal side.

teawamutu · 07/03/2019 23:03

Remind me what terrible thing results from washing getting darked on? Asking for a slattern friend (who definitely isn't me) who's been known to let clothes be darked on TWICE. Shock

BlackCatSleeping · 07/03/2019 23:09

The OP already explained that the shed was locked but the neighbor’s key fits the lock.

How big is your garden? Could you put the security light on the house so it shines up the garden?

Singlenotsingle · 08/03/2019 00:05

You know the answer to that tea. The washing gets darked on, then the spiders come and wipe their willies on it. Never leave your washing out overnight
