Neighbour has taped over our security light!!

We have had issues with our neighbours in the past, mainly being very nosy, and quite demanding of us (for example asking us to not use a certain part of our washing line incase the clothes flap in the wind and set of our security light, moaning when we had our fence replaced, at their request) the list goes on...but they have definatley got worse since they retired.

So my husband fitted a new security light to our back gardens shed last weekend as ours was broke. We have come home today and it has been taped over in green frog tape!!! To make matters worse we are suspicious that he had actually gone into our shed and used our frog tape, as it looks like things have been disturbed in there. The sheds on our street are all brick built and have the same fitting key....

I'm absolutely furious and don't no ow to proceed!

Obviously if the light has been going off and disturbing him sleeping (his bedroom is at the back of the house) if he had of told me I would of adjusted it/turned it off.

I wish I had as much guts as your neighbour. My neighbour has a security light. Their house backs on to the front of our house and we have a 2 large gardens between us and a small field between the gardens. Their stupid light goes on and off all bloody night lighting my bedroom up like it's day time despite very good curtains. It drives me crazy so I would love to go and tape over the light. Maybe your neighbours thinks you're really inconsiderate putting a light in the garden that shines into his bedroom? Hmm

Coyoacan · 07/03/2019 20:28

Tell him to get a grip and some blackout curtains

I personally could not sleep in a room with blackout curtains or one that was periodically illuminated by a strong light.

Brightpinktulip · 07/03/2019 20:28

The thing is they also have a security light on their shed!!

I'm more annoyed they have been in my garden, snooping around, and sticking tape on the light.

He bugs me about a lot of things and we pretty much normally accommodate him..

Why is your laundry out at night?! Your light has obviously been annoying them for a while. I don’t think they’re BU to expect your security light to not flash all the time, it’s massively annoying when a light flashes outside and it stops you sleeping. The light should be directed downwards anyway, not shining at their house. They’ve obviously spoken to you about your light before and you haven’t been helpful, so this time they took matters into their own hands. You’re lucky they only taped it - I’m afraid if your light was shining in my windows I’d have hit it with a hammer by now.

Running your engine whilst idle is illegal and results in a large fine, so you shouldn't be doing that. Not for de-icing and not to warm the car up.

Nat6999 · 07/03/2019 20:30

I would get CCTV installed just to catch him trespassing on your property.

SlangBack · 07/03/2019 20:32

I would get CCTV.

Also Just to say we have to put up with their dogs constantly barking, and their sons constant bad language when he visits (can hear him through the walls)

Tell him.

Brightpinktulip · 07/03/2019 20:33

Slangbang, I just might when I see! X

Obviously he's in the wrong but I hate my neighbours security light. It bikes into our bedroom and randomly goes off during the night when is windy.

mbosnz · 07/03/2019 20:35

Running your engine while stationary is illegal if you are on a public road, is it not? But not if you are not on a public road? (Although it sounds like OP's car would be on a public road?

wigglypiggly · 07/03/2019 20:36

Do you need a light on the shed, can it be put somewhere else so it doesnt shine into anyones house. I'd put up CCTV or a camera pointing towards your garden. I would wait and see if he says anything about the tape, once the shed has a new lock he wont be able to get in, how did he get into your garden.

Doubleorquits · 07/03/2019 20:38

Your light is pissing him off.

PrettyAmazingGrace · 07/03/2019 20:39

OP has said she doesn't leave washing out at night. Lucky, now the light's out of action again - or it would get darked on.

Doubleorquits · 07/03/2019 20:39

This reminds me of One foot in the grave lol

ChesterGreySideboard · 07/03/2019 20:40

In the past, he has also asked us not to run our cars in the morning to warm them up

In fairness that irritates the living fuck out of me. It is noisy, polluting, selfish and unnecessary

Doubleorquits · 07/03/2019 20:40

Neighbours doing irritating things can actually drive you to distraction.

BentNeckLady · 07/03/2019 20:44

Who does your light actually achieve if you only think it’s being set of by cats but your not sure as you don’t check. What ‘security’ does having a light that’s on and off at indeterminate points through the night offer you?

Security lights are a complete waste of time and seriously annoying!

ineedaholidaynow · 07/03/2019 20:44

If they have dropped kerbs I assume they have drives.

How do people demist their windscreens without having the car idling? I also have a heated windscreen

Twerking9til5 · 07/03/2019 20:45

A security light shinnng, and going on and off is a pain.
Running your engines is a pain (noise), it would drive me mad.

You have every right to park where you like in the road
They should keep the noise down if you can hear them through the wall.

You both sound like irritating neighbours.

Going into your shed and tampering with your light is totally unacceptable.

PersonaNonGarter · 07/03/2019 20:47

We need a diagram to decide about the security light.

However, the massive fucking irony is that it clearly is not making your property more secure. In fact, it seems to me that the main risk to your property is the light pissing him off so you might want to look at that.

On every thing else I would be frosty as fuck.

VelvetPineapple · 07/03/2019 20:52

OP has said she doesn't leave washing out at night

How is it setting off the security light then?

Brightpinktulip · 07/03/2019 20:55

Thank you everyone for posting. I can see opinion is divided here.

I don't think he should of been in my garden snooping and tampering full stop. This is what I'm most annoyed with about.

I don't leave my washing out over night. We park our cars in our drive and my husband used to run his before setting off for work in winter but he doesn't now since they asked him not too.

Between our two bits of drop kerb for the drive is a bit of road that people can park on. His son goes ballistic sweating and ranting if he shows up and someone is parked there (not just us, anyone) we don't have a need to park on it as we have the drive but occasionally if washing the car or weeding the drive we do park on this bit of (public!) road!

I understand that he might pissed off with the light and I am sorry for that...it's turned off for now...

Pretty much everyone has security lights around here...back and front, including my neighbours.

I'll see him tomorrow as I'm off work so I'll see what he has to say..

Am I the only one who's more concerned that if the ops washing is setting the security light off it must be out at night and is going to get darked on.

Although my neighbours used to have a security light that shone into our bedroom all night. I hated them and spent many a sleepless night plotting evil revenge.

expat101 · 07/03/2019 21:06

Could it be another neighbour? Our ''latest'' neighbour installed a security light which flicks on and off all night and although our houses would be about 100 metres apart, the light shines right up into our bedroom, so we are unable to leave our blind semi-open for the breeze in summer. It's incredible to see how far it actually lights up!

Oh and when there is a power flicker through the lines, the light stays on permanently until someone presses the re-set button. That can take weeks...

Reallyevilmuffin · 07/03/2019 21:10

How do you know it was the neighbours, and not someone planning a midnight robbery... ;)
