We are thinking of getting ducks ... my friend said she had ducks and walked them on leads !
My husband says " no way we are not walking ducks "
Do they need walking ?
What would you think if you saw someone walking a duck on a lead ?
Would you walk a duck if you had one ?
I'd walk a duck

Again? Hmm

JRMisOdious · 04/03/2019 20:34

Not sure that’s legal. You might find yourself up before the beak.

Sorry, quackers was already taken.

Feelingfullandreadytoclean · 04/03/2019 20:35

I would think I want to be there friend.

Heybreya · 04/03/2019 20:35

Vanillamanilla1 · 04/03/2019 21:08

No I really haven't posted about this before as we only decided on possible duck being a pet today
Glad to hear the stories of the wonderment and appreciation of duck walking... we might get 2 as I don't want Drake to be lonely ..(haven't got a name for second one yet )
And some posters that have pointed out they are not meant to be walked... I did not know this hence my post and my asking
And the naff duck jokes Wink

Omg I would love to see a Cockerell on the handle bars on a bike - that sounds adorable.

frankie001 · 04/03/2019 22:36

Anyone who has an issue should keep their beak out. I’m sure it won’t ruffle many feathers.

BeachtheButler · 04/03/2019 23:36

I'd think there was someone with a pet duck.

SmallFastPenguin · 04/03/2019 23:39

I don't think ducks need a walk but they do need access to water and ideally a pond of some kind.

Oh you're back. Hello again. What's your obsession with walking ducks?

BringYourUtmost · 05/03/2019 00:00

Painfully try hard

differentkindofpenguin · 05/03/2019 00:09

There used to be a man in Guildford who walked in the city centre with a duck, pretty much every day. Or it may have been a goose...
Don't think it was on a lead though

ErrolTheDragon · 05/03/2019 00:27

I saw someone out and about with his tame duck once. Not on a lead, and I'm not sure how far it walked, I think it must have been carried or flown some of the way. There was no likelihood of dog bothering... this was at an RSPB reserve, we came across them in a hide and later back at the car park.

safariboot · 05/03/2019 00:33

What the duck?

SweetButaPsycho · 05/03/2019 00:33

I love ducks! A huge part of their appeal is how cute they are when they waddle so I'd be following you down the street with a huge grin on my face loving it anc sneaking video clips lol

TrixieFranklin · 05/03/2019 07:57

We had this same thread a few weeks ago..

Ninninannanoonoo · 05/03/2019 08:52

We went to see this last year Grin www.memphistravel.com/peabody-ducks

Vanillamanilla1 · 05/03/2019 09:00

Oh did we Trixyfrankiln apologies for not searching the much repeated how to look after your duck ... Didn't think the subject came up that often
Also for those that think I posted this a few weeks back you're very much mistaken and a quick search maybe would tell you that it wasn't actually me .. I don't have an " obsession with walking ducks " I've never mentioned it before ... Mearly asking as we lost our dog recently and to be honest don't think we could do another dog again so we compromised on something easier maybe and wether or not it needs walking ... I thought yes,as there are plenty of you tube posts with people walking ducks .
However I will still ask the reputable duck keepers and I will research thoroughly a ducks Needs before I decide to ' prop up my lifestyle' ..whatever that means ... I don't know what kind of lifestyle that needs propping with ducks but there you go
Thought I'd get something that's relatively easy to keep ( or maybe not ) but can't commit to another dog and don't like cats
I'm actually quite excited about having a couple in my back garden ..we have the space and quite like the idea of fresh duck eggs too . We have a veg plot going begging so will build and enclosure for 2 ducks ... I am worried about foxes though ..but hopefully we can build some sort of enclosed coop that they can sleep in and have safety at night ...
Would tonight the ducks a run of the garden during the day relatively safe ?? Or would I be constantly looking over my shoulder
Next door but 2 have foxes In her garden
I don't want them sniffing around if they get a whiff of wildlife
You can actually get duck harnesses yknow for ducks so that must be a thing..duck walking .. I'm not talking miles like you would a dog but maybe round the block for some exercise

I had a pet duck as a child. It thought it was a cross between a human and a dog.
It used to follow us to school until Mum worked out that if you left some shoes under the orange tree, Ducky was happy to sit with the shoes.
She pooped everywhere.
When Mum came home from work, the dog, cat and duck would be lined up to greet her.
The postie complained that he did not get barked at by the dog, but the duck would come screaming around the corner of the house quacking at him when he delivered the mail. (Dog was old so slept through this but did teach duck well).
Used to go for a walk and Ducky would follow so regular sight to see me walking around the block with Ducky.
I think ducks make great pets, ours did sleep with the dog, so no fox threats.

teyem · 05/03/2019 09:17

I love it when people do crazy shit like this, it makes me feel like my low level weirdness is less conspicuous.

FenellaMaxwell · 05/03/2019 11:51

Really? You expect everyone to believe that 2 separate people within 2 weeks would decided to use mumsnet to discuss walking a duck on a lead? Hmm

Hoppinggreen · 05/03/2019 11:58

I also had a pet duck ( which I never walked)
They are lovely but noisy and poop a lot. I taught mine to swim in the bath, she was not happy the first time she met cold water!
They do need access to enough water to swim in and they will wreck your garden, and poo loads - did I mention the poo?

CommunistLegoBloc · 05/03/2019 13:42

Bollocks. What a weird fetish to have - threads about walking ducks, taking ducks on road trips, little duck harnesses...

CandidaAlbicans · 05/03/2019 13:45

From what I've read ducks make an awful mess of grass, so how big is your garden? Big enough to rotate their area so the quagmire they'll turn it into can regenerate? Big enough to have a large pond suitable for their needs?

As to walking them, no. You only have to look at how they walk to realise they are not designed for doing that for long and that paddling is their natural form of movement. I'd be very worried about dog attacks too if out in public. If you want an animal to walk but don't want another dog how about volunteering with the Cinnamon Trust?
