Are you giving up anything for Lent?

Even if you're not religious do you give something up or try to do something positive more?

After new year I gave up eating after dinner but the last couple of weeks I've slipped back into bad habits and feel bloated and crappy. So I'll go back to that.

I try to encourage my children to do something extra rather than give something up. Or they give up something different each week.

I'm going to give up procrastinating at night time on mumsnet and get more sleep so no screen time after 8pm. And no evening eating.

I'll also make sure I get a bike ride in each week as had started cycling and was loving it.

I'm not particularly religious but was raised RC and the habit and desire to "better" myself during Lent has stuck.

I couldn’t be more anti religious but I do like an excuse to better myself!

Especially this time of year, so much better than gloomy January when there’s so much misery already!

More yoga less food for me!

Whackaguacamole · 04/03/2019 18:31

Coke here! The cola kind...

topcat2014 · 04/03/2019 18:31

might be tough

PiebaldHamster · 04/03/2019 18:32

No

SneakyGremlins · 04/03/2019 18:32

I'm giving up giving things up.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 04/03/2019 18:40

I do : No sweets/chocolate/biscuits/cakes
I don't smoke or drink so this is my chance to improve myself.

I also do StopTober for sweets etc .
The first 4-5 days are hellish but then I get into it. I know that at the end of this there is Easter sweets or Hallowe'en sweets .

Lungelady · 04/03/2019 18:42

No.
I don't eat chocolate, cake or sweets.
I do like a gin and am not giving that up.
I plan to give more to the food bank for Lent.

SmallFastPenguin · 04/03/2019 18:44

My dh always jokes that he is giving up pancakes.

DoubleStrengthApple · 04/03/2019 18:48

Chocolate! It'll be hard but I've managed it before.

GrumpyOldMare · 04/03/2019 18:48

No.Not religious.

SparklySneakers · 04/03/2019 20:00

I think I'm going to treat myself to jam doughnuts tomorrow then make a pledge to eat more healthily whilst we are still in the EU and can get fresh fruit and veg at prices I can afford and when I want them Grin

Is Lent the reason we eat fish on Fridays?

I'm not Catholic but thinking of doing the meat thing and also chocolate so it tastes better at Easter.
Delayed gratification and all that!

SparklySneakers · 04/03/2019 20:16

Fish Fridays are a religious thing afaik but not sure if just RC. I read about it years ago but can't remember the significance of why a Friday and why fish.

Last year I gave up plastic cutlery which I am still doing today

I think this year I’ll be more traditional and give up cola

SparklySneakers · 04/03/2019 20:17

I'm veggie anyway so no meat or fish any day. My mum always does fish Friday. School have fish on friday every week. RC school.

7Days · 04/03/2019 20:17

Because Jesus died on a Friday so no meat on that die as a mini sacrifice

flitwit99 · 04/03/2019 20:22

I'm giving up mindless snacking. And I try to do something nice for someone every day.
I'm going to snack like crazy today and tomorrow.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 04/03/2019 20:24

As prescibed: no 'unneccessary' food (chocolate, cake, crisps etc.), no alcohol. And only one meal per day - if possible without meat.
Money saved goes to charity.
You quickly get used to it.

PoptartPoptart · 04/03/2019 20:26

I’m giving up mayonnaise.
I usually have it every day in my sandwiches and a dollop on my plate with dinner. I bloody love it!
I’m hoping it might have the added benefit of helping me lose a few pounds too!

Arcadia · 04/03/2019 20:35

Giving up: crisps and chocolate

I barely drink alcohol anyway

Doing: daily meditation or yoga (even if just 10 mins)

NotAnotherNameChange99 · 04/03/2019 20:51

I liked this...it's what we're doing this year!

Are you giving up anything for Lent?
SparklySneakers · 04/03/2019 20:54

That's a great idea! I've just cleared out a load of clothes and given them to a neighbouring family but I've loads of other things for the charity shop too. I donated two bin bags full a couple of weeks ago and have so much more to donate.

OP posts:
HalfBloodPrincess · 04/03/2019 20:59

I don’t normally do anything, but this year my teenagers are giving up 40p of their dinner money for 40 days to donate to charity (it’s someone from Instagrams idea I think, and they’ve chosen to give it to the Cats Protection) so I’m joining in and doing £1 a day from what I’d usually spend.

Doodlekitty · 04/03/2019 21:06

I used to give up something every year, fizzy drinks, chocolate etc.
I haven't for the last few years.

This year I'm doing something different. I'm struggling with depression and anxiety, so this year I'm giving up using my phone from finishing work until bedtime. That's 6.30 onwards pretty much. Hopefully that will allow me to be more present and free up time for self care.

PodgeBod · 04/03/2019 21:34

I've fallen into very bad food habits, so for Lent I'm giving up chocolate and pledging to eat my 5 servings of fruit/veg a day.
