Are you giving up anything for Lent?

Even if you're not religious do you give something up or try to do something positive more?

After new year I gave up eating after dinner but the last couple of weeks I've slipped back into bad habits and feel bloated and crappy. So I'll go back to that.

I try to encourage my children to do something extra rather than give something up. Or they give up something different each week.

I'm going to give up procrastinating at night time on mumsnet and get more sleep so no screen time after 8pm. And no evening eating.

I'll also make sure I get a bike ride in each week as had started cycling and was loving it.

I'm not particularly religious but was raised RC and the habit and desire to "better" myself during Lent has stuck.

I'm sort of giving up alcohol - which is something my brother does, and previously I've always thought I couldn't possibly do it. But I actually haven't had any for about ten days, and I'm planning to stay dry until our new bathroom is finished, probably around the end of March. So not through Lent, but several weeks.

I’m thinking of giving up chocolate

3luckystars · 04/03/2019 21:58

I am going to try to give up mumsnet for 40 days. I absolutely love it here so i hope to get an enormous prize at the end of lent.
I will probably also give up chocolate, sweets and nutella for the first day or two and then cave in.

I’m giving up wine & chocolate and living off Gin & cheese!

ChikiTIKI · 04/03/2019 22:01

TV and my ipad :(
I am excited about the time I will save and the ways I can use it to enrich my life.

Won't be easy though.

We'll give up sweet foods and alcohol in the house as a family (I tend to be in charge of the supermarket shopping, so I just won't buy anything sweet or alcoholic until Easter.)
I will also try to give it up outside the house, but other family members can do as they see fit.

Buying things on eBay... Very bad habit of mine and really we need nothing!

Topseyt · 05/03/2019 02:51

Nothing. I already almost never eat the usual stuff such as chocolate and crisps.

I am another who has given up with giving up.

Justanotheruser01 · 05/03/2019 06:50

No, never
Life’s too short

ZenNudist · 05/03/2019 16:46

Cakes and biscuits. Kids are giving up chocolate and taking up being helpful ("helfull" my 5yo wrote). Dont know what i should take up. Earlier bedtimes? Keep me off the biscuits!

Wendywoo1000 · 05/03/2019 16:56

No. Life is too short to deny yourself of anything you enjoy.

drspouse · 05/03/2019 17:00

How about a craft to keep your hands full zen?

I'm having a last minute Ebay binge Blush

havingtochangeusernameagain · 05/03/2019 18:36

Nope. Life is too short to give things up. And my birthday always falls during Lent so I am definitely not giving up wine!

havingtochangeusernameagain · 05/03/2019 18:38

Although I have been told I have slightly raised blood pressure so I SUPPOSE I could give up crisps to reduce my salt intake and see if it has any effect. I exercise, don't add salt to anything, don't overdo the alcohol and am fit in other ways so I can't really see any other way to reduce my blood pressure (except for medication). My mum is stick thin and has high blood pressure so I guess it is genetic.

ZenNudist · 08/03/2019 08:15

I have taken up early bedtime. Managed ot so far and stayed off biscuits in meeting yesterday! 2 days down....
