Can I leave my newborn for like 2 minutes?

DD is 3 days old today and I’m wondering if I’ve been stupid. I feel really guilty.

Me and DH are doing split shifts to look after DD. I’ve just gone into the kitchen to put a pie in for breakfast. She was in the room next to me asleep in her Moses basket. Our house is tiny so I’d hear even the smallest whimper so I literally just ran in to get the pie in/out.

Last night when DH was asleep and DD was in her Moses basket I also quickly ran upstairs to the loo to go for the worlds quickest wee as I didn’t want to wake DH either.

She’s been in her Moses basket, there’s nothing she can get tangled on and there’s no hazards in the room.

Is this ok or have I been irresponsible? I feel really guilty but I don’t know what other people do?

Apple pie for breakfast sounds bloody lovely!

Congratulations on the new baby - I hope you enjoyed the pie Grin

Love cooled boiled water for the baby’s bath"
Well they go on and on about it, once you're pregnant the word 'water' is never uttered without 'cooled boiled' before it. :o

And roomba I am really glad your dc escaped without serious injury too :o

I was the same with the first. Second one used to get popped in the Moses basket in a room that we were constantly passing through and greeted as we walked past. Third one, I used to forget she was there!
All perfectly happy kids nowGrin

That's so true about the water- never heard that phrase until I had a baby!
Congrats OP. I remember leaving mine for a shower and by the time I had finished I was convinced he would have disappeared!

riotlady · 04/03/2019 08:46

Do you have a video monitor OP? I used to stress about leaving mine while I went to the loo (I had horrible constipation after my c section, so it did take a while) and being able to see her on the monitor helped a lot

Of course you can. Your baby is sleeping. They'll let you know quick enough if they wake up and want something. Get some sleep yourself - really its fine to be a different room for a bit

Actually Meadow does sound like a nice name though.

Ah congratulations sweetheart. Hope you enjoyed your apple pie and well done for getting up and about so early after birth!

dangermouseisace · 04/03/2019 15:32

It’s fine, but it’s difficult to accept until you’ve had a few. Here’s my personal sleeping baby development:

Baby 1- permanently attached. If not permantly attached, worried I was damaging him.
Baby 2- sometimes in the next room.
Baby 3- as far away as humanly possible from child 1+2, without actually being in a separate house!

I want apple pie now!
OP when I was in hospital just after having my first, I didn't know you had to push the baby round the ward in the trolley cot thing. I was walking around carrying my tiny newborn on my shoulder whilst dragging my catheter around- legs still partly numb from epidural. A very kind nurse gently put my baby back in the cot and explained it was safer to push her in it! Looking back it was really stupid and unsafe but no harm done and when you're tired, the obvious doesn't always occur to you. Nobody tells you these things either!

I was like this when DD was brand new. She is 19 weeks now and I can just about leave her alone without flapping. The new mum anxiety is a killer but it does ease up. Congratulations on your baba xxx
