Could this be DD's appendix playing up?

DD 3, started complaining about a stomach ache 3 days ago. She points to her belly button if I ask her where it is. I took her to the GP after nursery said she seemed in quite a bit of pain on thursday.

GP felt it was just a stomach ache as she wasn't tender over the appendix at all.

Yesterday afternoon she started vomiting and complaining her stomach was hurting again. Suddenly yelping and holding her stomach. She's stopped being sick now but has very loose bowels.

She's lying next to me now whimpering in her sleep and saying ow ow my tummy hurts.

Could it just be a stomach bug? She's still pointing to her belly button and the pain doesn't seem to have moved at all. She has a slight temp.

Please phone 111 for advice.

GreenTulips · 02/03/2019 23:02

Phone for assistance or take her to A and E and get a second opinion

binkyblinky · 02/03/2019 23:06

I agree. A ruptured appendix can be very dangerous. Get her to hospital to rule it out

Definitely get her seen now. It might have been brewing but sounds like it could well be her appendix now.

Phone 111.
Does she have a high temperature? When my nieces appendix ruptured her temperature was uncontrollable.
Hope she is okay op.

Hi all, thanks for the replies. 111 felt it was a stomach bug as she’d already been seen by a GP etc

She settled back to sleep about 3am and is still sleeping now. Hopefully the pain is just cramps from sickness and diarrhoea?

Our gp dismissed my son’s appendicitis and he went on to have a burst appendix. Get a second medical opinion.

She's awake now and again saying her tummy really hurts. When I ask her where she points to her belly button again. She won't let me touch it. I think i'll have to take her to the walk in centre.

I think that is wise

EleanorLavish · 03/03/2019 09:50

How is she otherwise OP?
Temp? Rapid pulse etc?
I think you're wise to get it checked again.

FaithInfinity · 03/03/2019 10:02

I wouldn’t take her to a walk in personally, unless it’s attached to a hospital? I’d call 111 about being seen in OOH/get told to go to A&E ideally at a hospital so if she needs to be admitted you don’t have to faff with transferring her while she’s in pain. Hope you get it sorted soon.

QueenofLouisiana · 03/03/2019 10:04

DS’s burst appendix was a UTI according to the first GP we saw. He was 3 at the time.

The only good thing was that the antibiotics we were given stopped the infection from killing him. I can’t say it stopped it becoming serious as he ended up in hospital for a week while they got the infection and resulting illness under control. He still has bowel issues, 10 years later, and these will be with him for life.

In his case his temp was out of control, bowel movements were awful (bubbly, floating, no substance) and he had a crouching walk to guard his stomach. It was really distinctive- like watching an infirm, person crouching over a walking stick.

When DD was younger she presented like this so we took her to A and E. The lovely doctor asked her to stand on her right leg and hop. she managed it, but it was painful. The doctor said that if it had been her appendix she wouldn't have been able to hop. We were told it was a stomach bug, but to come back if she got any worse.

In the event the doctor was right.

I hope your DD gets seen and feels better soon.

Littlebird88 · 03/03/2019 10:17

my 15 year old just had her appendix removed on Thursday and didn't have any vomiting or dirahhea..
however it can present in different ways
they can do blood tests and things like the hop test.

Sulliess · 03/03/2019 10:22

DD woke up about an hr ago, vomited again and went back to sleep. She didn’t mention her stomach hurting. She has a slight temp but certainly not raging.

OOH’s appt at 12.45 so hopefully it will just end up as a nasty stomach bug.

@Littlebird88 is the hop test a "thing" then? I thought it was just this particular doctor who suggested it.

Littlebird88 · 03/03/2019 11:07

I hadn't heard of the hop test until.the A and E Dr asked her to hop and she couldn't.
I actually thought she was being a typical teen and trying to get out of something !

TodaysFishIsTroutALaCreme · 03/03/2019 11:07

The hop test is to check for rebound pain. It was the rebound pain that took me to see my gp and a few hours later I was without my appendix.

MissPhonic · 03/03/2019 11:13

Low grade temp, diarrhoea, vomiting, all sets my alarm bells ringing for ?appendicitis as a medic. Glad you are getting her seen. We do the hop test for paeds but dont use anything in isolation.

FloatingthroughSpace · 03/03/2019 11:16

Don't rule out intussusception too. My DD's intussusception pain was just below belly button.

FloatingthroughSpace · 03/03/2019 11:17

A and E not walk in.

MissPhonic · 03/03/2019 11:29

Agreed. I'd head to A&E if able. She needs bloods and close observation, it sounds highly lilely that you will be sent there anyway (on the info given).

Sulliess · 03/03/2019 12:26

I’m at the OOHs now, wasn’t so concerned this morning but she is still asleep and quite hard to rouse. She didn’t wake up when I put her in the car or took her in. Just waiting to be seen

OP posts:
FaithInfinity · 03/03/2019 12:32

Definitely the right decision then. Hope the wait isn’t too long.

EleanorLavish · 03/03/2019 12:58

Please let us know how you get on OP, if you get a chance?
Hope all is well.
