DD, 12, has broken her leg

She got the cast on Wednesday and she's really struggling to get around on crutches and with not being able to do things.

Any ideas of what I can do or get her to make life more tolerable? Fun magazines or lap-friendly craft projects? There's only so much screen time she can stand.

Is it too obvious to suggest books?

If you haven’t already then get a cast cover to make showering easier: limboproducts.co.uk

If she wants to learn a new craft skill she could browse through the Craftsy app/website, which now seems to be called Bluprint.

Thanks for the link! We will need something for showers, bin bags aren't really cutting it.

She's a big reader, but prefers to read at night before bed. I'll have a look at that app, thanks.

Scraperfoil? Or maybe a latch hook kit?

Sexnotgender · 02/03/2019 22:08

Can she knit? Might be a good time to learn if not.

weegiemum · 02/03/2019 22:08

Is there anyone who could teach her to knit or crochet? Or she could use YouTube tutorials?

I really enjoy doing this:

(It's one I've done myself and is lovely). Lots of choice out there.

EvaHarknessRose · 02/03/2019 22:10

Sympathy, my dn did same recently. She got into bullet journalling and really into watercolours.

There's a good online photography course called ' A year with my camera' too ( just skip the first six weeks if not using a posh camera.

hownowpowpow · 02/03/2019 22:14

You can rent a knee scooter. Might make things a little easier for her to get about.

An adult colouring book and some lovely new pens.

She’ll build up arm muscles if she keeps at it with the crutches...little and often. Cycling mitts seem to help as does padding the handles. The Red Cross Loan out wheelchairs on a temporary basis which might help.

Colouring and crochet are my crafty suggestions!

CallMeWoman · 02/03/2019 23:21

Thank you for all these ideas. I've ordered the shower cover and also a sock, and I will show her this thread tomorrow!

A mindfulness app like headspace might be worth a try?

ThomasRichard · 02/03/2019 23:26

Do you think she’d be up for making a fiddle cushion/apron for someone with dementia? My local hospital collects them and they’re really appreciated by the dementia patients and the staff. It doesn’t need to be particularly fancy and there are loads of good ideas on Pinterest.

CallMeWoman · 02/03/2019 23:30

I like the idea of mindfulness and doing some good for the local community, thank you.

Padding on the crutches. Netflix, prime and kindle unlimited - that’s what got me through.

I was about to say NOT a limbo but see it’s too late...

Depending on the break they drag horribly on the limb when they are removed 😔

We survived with a bin bag, duct tape and a chair in the shower.

Tr1skel1on · 03/03/2019 01:21

I think the Limbo covers must vary in their usefulness depending on the person and injury.

Personally I used one for 12 weeks straight having shattered and dislocated my ankle & I would have been lost without it.

Handy hint, when having to stand anywhere have a chair to rest your knee on. Gives your hands a break from crutches. Also always do stairs on your bum, saves your arms.

Furries · 03/03/2019 01:45

Millie Marotta colouring books. I’m ancient, and would have laughed at someone advising me to do “colouring in”. Can’t believe how relaxing I found it and how fast time went by. Weirdly switching off whilst being focussed.

Hope she starts to feel better soon.

BorderlineExperimental · 03/03/2019 02:06

Cross stitch? I know it sounds a bit granny-ish but it's super easy to get going and you can get all sorts of amazing patterns these days.

If there's any fandoms she's particularly into then chances are there'll be patterns she'll like.

CloudsFactory, for example, do very simple and cute little patterns based on all sorts including Disney, historical and mythological figures, TV shows, films, games, etc..

Etsy is a great place to look as well, there are literally endless shops selling very cool patterns with pretty much any subject you could think of.
