Has anyone come across Momo?

Apologies if this has been asked before, but I only heard about it last night. Some of my DD's friends are seriously freaked out by this but she's (thankfully) not come across it (we've checked her devices).

I saw it ages ago - as a dummy/art piece that someone had created. I saw yesterday that it was in the news freaking kids out.

Catsingangs · 28/02/2019 10:49

It's a hoax. HTH Flowers

Tolleshunt · 28/02/2019 10:50

Never, but have told DD that YouTube is currently broken, as a precaution. We never let her watch unsupervised, or allow her to choose her own programmes, and I'm not convinced that Momo isn't an urban myth, but I don't want to take the risk of her seeing its ugly mug, even if we were able to stop the video before anything harmful was said.

Will be watching events to see how this pans out before declaring YouTube operational again. Would rather be safe than sorry, as there's plenty of other channels to watch.

Notthatsimple · 28/02/2019 10:50

It’s a hoax, that has been given oxygen by people on the internet who believe everything they read. And now schools are bloody fuelling it.

Notthatsimple · 28/02/2019 10:51

I also love the theory that it’s a hoax started by Netflix Wink

GiveMeSteam · 28/02/2019 10:53

notthatsimple Love it! Grin

EstrellaDamn · 28/02/2019 10:55

I had DD upset about it last night because someone in the playground told her about it. I don't think any of them have actually seen it. Got an email from the school about it this morning. I can't help thinking it's getting more oxygen than it requires - the DM has essentially advertised it every day for about a fortnight.

SleightOfMind · 28/02/2019 10:57

Two of DDs friends claim to have seen It while playing Minecraft.
They’re both lovely little drama Llamas though so I’m taking it with a pinch of salt.

My youngest don’t really watch YouTube, go on social media or play interactive games.
I’ve told I’ve explained to DD that it’s a prank, played by teenagers to spook children and she’s decided to steer clear of YouTube for a bit (she doesn’t play games or do social media)

IceRebel · 28/02/2019 10:57

Have I seen Momo?

Yes - In sensationalized news articles, hysterical posts on FB and over the top Tweets.

Have ,I or anyone else, actually seen it where people are claiming it is. E.g pop ups on Youtube or sending messages on whatsapp?

No. Nor have I seen any proof of such claims.

OkMaybeNot · 28/02/2019 10:59

No. I specifically went looking for it and found nothing. No screenshots or videos of anything substantive. Weird.

Allyg1185 · 28/02/2019 11:02

No ds hasn't seen it and only knows about it from kids at the school. School have sent out a text message asking parents to chat to their children about it but that's it

Didthatreallyhappen2 · 28/02/2019 11:07

I think schools aren't helping TBH. I know of at least 4 primaries that have spoken to their children about this (which seems to have caused nothing but panic) but I couldn't find any actual footage of it when I searched earlier. Just something else to worry about online ….

CallMeRachel · 28/02/2019 11:14

My friends 7 yo daughter just said to me about MoMo this morning.

I hadn't heard of it so she told me it's some girl on YouTube "that tells you to cut yourself". Hmm
I asked where she knew about this and she said at school.

3Blues · 28/02/2019 11:14

I have actually seen it. I heard it was a hoax, spoke to my sons about it but more in a "it's a virus on the internet and it's made to seem real by using contact names in your phone etc but it's all fake". Just used it to open up a dialogue about safety on the internet and asked them to talk to me if they see it or anything.

Skip forward a few days, and they shout for me to look at the TV and there it is on their YouTube and later on there was a "momo" on fortnite. I don't allow them to have headsets for their gaming, so no chance of randoms speaking to them.

I think a mountain is being made out of a mole hill, but have used it to reopen internet safety discussions with the kids. Simple.

LooseSeal2 · 28/02/2019 11:18

My friends DD saw it in one of those daft opening surprise egg videos, asked her mum what the scary face was. Think it was just the imagine of the face though, not evil messages.

Shinyletsbebadguys · 28/02/2019 11:19

School sent out guidance to our lot yesterday

I tend to agree with posters that it's been massively inflated and the schools are definately turning it into forbidden fruit which doesn't bloody help

Ds1 is allowed kidstube access only for 30 minutes in our presence but I got caught by a stupid Minecraft video thing that I had checked (but stupidly not watched until the end ) and it made a reference to slenderman with a picture....that caused no end of grief so like another poster I've re opened the internet safety discussion and reiterated the rules with ds1 (plus extra needs so he will absolutely fixate on anything like this so I have to be a bit cautious)

SureTry · 28/02/2019 11:23

DD's school sent out a letter regarding it. I spoke with DD9 about it and she said she had seen it last year, it didn't pop up but was a suggestion as in see Momo in minecraft, she just refreshed the page and carried on. I asked her why she didn't tell me, she said she thought it was silly and ignored it.

Meandmetoo · 28/02/2019 11:36

No one has seen it op, none of the videos telling kids to harm themselves/others anyway. There are a few rather benign ones where they appear in an egg opening video (where the title of the video is clearly marked Momo but its only the image and it looks like the creator of the video is trying to zap Momo away as if it's a baddie), but the existence of the videos referred to absolutely do not exist whatsoever.

Hollowvictory · 28/02/2019 11:41

It's not a hoax.
You can't Check devices for it, it pops up in you tube videos and games eg fortnight that have been hacked.
I dont think National Online Safety Agency would be sending advice to schools for a hoax. S hool forwarded the advice to parents in the form of an online poster.
I only know 1 child who's actually seen it.

crosspelican · 28/02/2019 11:41

It's a hoax.

It's a hoax.

It's a hoax.

youaremyrain · 28/02/2019 11:43

It's a hoax. It's only become a "thing" because adults are freaking out about it.

Not one single video has been reported to YouTube

Hollowvictory · 28/02/2019 11:43

If you read the link you posted, it says children committing suicide is a hoax, not momo

Meandmetoo · 28/02/2019 11:45

It is categorically a hoax.

Big giant hoax. Big fat giant huge hoax.

Kids are lying left right and centre about it, think about it. They can be little turds now and blame Momo and parents believe them because their darling Brittany would never cut her own hair or her sisters. No child has seen an actual video of Momo telling them to do stuff. None. Because they don't exist.

BishopBrennansArse · 28/02/2019 11:47

I know what it is but I haven't happened across it, no. Read plenty of breathless hysterical type posts about a friend who heard of an 8 year old committing suicide and all that.

Have chatted with my kids about how it's all bullshit and they've agreed with me that the YouTube stuff is bollocks as it doesn't work like that. We had a laugh about how it's not even remotely scary if you're into Tim Burton stuff like we are.

Got an email from school perpetuating the myths on social media, so that's helpful.

But then all my kids are secondary age or about to be. I'd hate them to be younger with this going on.

BishopBrennansArse · 28/02/2019 11:48

@Hollowvictory it's all bollocks.
