DS(4) temp of 40.1

DS came from school fine.

When I got in at 5.30 he was complaining of headache. He wasnt even ferreting around on the shopping.

He came in and laid straight down. I gave him some calpol. His temp was rising. Rising. 40.1 was its highest. Stripped him out of pjs and took thick fleece blanket off him. He was shivering whilst burning up and wrapped up.

Refused all offers of food or drink... even ice cream.

He perked up about 30 mins after calpol and had some plain crisps, water and an ice lolly. Havent checked his temp again. Still hot to touch but not nearly as hot as before. Now asleep, nude in his bed with duvet on.

Anything I need to do or be aware of?

There's nasty viruses going around, they are bringing Adults to their knees.

The shivering is because he's to hot, so it's just about keeping his temperature down.

My 21 year old came back from college, on Monday exactly the same and she still is only on ice lollies.

GIVe him a wet wash cloth to wipe over himself if he wants too. More calpol when he is due and lots of sips of water. See how he is doing in the morning. If it shoots back up before he can have a third dose of calpol, you can add paracetomol 90 mins after the dose of calpol.

Check for meningitis symptoms considering the sore neck, that’s a little worrying. You’re probably best ringing 111 to double check as that is an awfully high temperature.

miltonroad · 28/02/2019 00:56

Phone 111 they will be able to advise

cjt110 · 28/02/2019 00:58

My immediate thoughts were meningitis. Hes terribly hot but how dropping off again.

No rash but very hot. Am on sofa bed with him.

There doesnt need to be a rash with meningitis.

ineedaholidaynow · 28/02/2019 01:01

I would phone for advice

MamaRaisingBoys · 28/02/2019 01:01

Ring 111.

Agree there are some nasty viruses going round atm. My dad has been floored by one for a week and a half. Ds(3) has had one for a week alongside tonsillitis and is only just recovering. He had some high temps but none above 39.5. Complained constantly about legs and stomach hurting.

If medication brings the temp down I’d not be too worried but just because it’s so high and he’s complaining of a sore neck I’d get some advice.

Hope he’s feeling better soon

MamaRaisingBoys · 28/02/2019 01:03

Also I believe the rash is a late sign of meningitis. Never wait for a rash if you’re concerned it could be that

cjt110 · 28/02/2019 01:03

Going to uncover him for 10 mins. See if his temp comes down as have had chance for ibuprofen to work

When he says his neck hurts does he mean his neck or his throat? Sometimes little ones don't have the words to explain where it hurts. Can he put his chin on his chest?

cjt110 · 28/02/2019 01:08

Hes fast asleep now. Made mention of his "neck" once. Do I need to wake him?

OP posts:
Sycamoretrees · 28/02/2019 01:10

I'd let him sleep but keep a careful watch on him and check his temp regularly. (I'm not medically trained though, if you're worried call 111).

ineedaholidaynow · 28/02/2019 01:11

Is he hot all over, how hot are his feet and hands? Has he been ok with light?

rach1213 · 28/02/2019 01:17

I'd call 111 and tell them about the neck pain

cjt110 · 28/02/2019 01:18

Ok with light.

On to 111 now. Hot all over.

Completely undressed (him not me)

ineedaholidaynow · 28/02/2019 01:28

Hope he soon improves OP

Sycamoretrees · 28/02/2019 01:29

Hope you manage some rest too and he's feeling better in the morning.

SlangBack · 28/02/2019 01:45

Keep an eye on cold feet & hands OP.

DrCristinaYang · 28/02/2019 01:48

Also keep an eye for mottled skin. Any deterioration in his symptoms I would go straight to A&E x

littlemonkeyface · 28/02/2019 05:54

If it shoots back up before he can have a third dose of calpol, you can add paracetomol 90 mins after the dose of calpol.

Is there paracetamol in calpol? If yes, please do NOT add extra paracetamol as it may cause liver damage, possibly even liver failure.

Disclaimer: I am not medically qualified and you should check with someone who is.

hardyloveit · 28/02/2019 06:03

Yes calpol contains paracetamol - please do not ever give both in that short space of time! Ibuprofen and calpol can alternate.
Also my doctor always advises never to strip a child if they have a temp or give them a damp cloth.
If it's not an infection etc the temp will go down with medicine. If the temp stays or keeps coming back then phone the doctor or 111 which you have done

Sleephead1 · 28/02/2019 06:10

my little boy had high temps and sore head and body he then got chickenpox but I had taken him to the doctors before the spots she told me that the symptoms of meningitis start out very similar so to keep a very close eye and if he got worse, struggled with light, got a rash I must seek immediate help she said they would rather see him again even if it was just a virus.
