DS(4) temp of 40.1

DS came from school fine.

When I got in at 5.30 he was complaining of headache. He wasnt even ferreting around on the shopping.

He came in and laid straight down. I gave him some calpol. His temp was rising. Rising. 40.1 was its highest. Stripped him out of pjs and took thick fleece blanket off him. He was shivering whilst burning up and wrapped up.

Refused all offers of food or drink... even ice cream.

He perked up about 30 mins after calpol and had some plain crisps, water and an ice lolly. Havent checked his temp again. Still hot to touch but not nearly as hot as before. Now asleep, nude in his bed with duvet on.

Anything I need to do or be aware of?

Hope he s ok Op

If it shoots back up before he can have a third dose of calpol, you can add paracetomol 90 mins after the dose of calpol

Please don’t do this. Calpol is paracetamol, you would be overdosing the poor child.

Calpol is paracetamol. Ffs there are some total fools on Mumsnet recently with medication advice. Ibuprofen is better at temp control than paracetamol. Both can be given together or alternated.

Had a fitful night on the sofa with him. Still high temp. Got him in the docs at 8.30.

Cant tempt him with anything but water.

Doc advised she thinks he might be starting with tonsilitis as his glands are up a bit and he has redness at the back of his throat.

My 4 year old is like this just now. I’m only just getting over it but by ds is in the middle of it. I’ve alternated calpol and ibuprofen over night. Write down when you’ve given each dose so you don’t get confused and end up overdosing him.
Lots of fluids and ice cubes to suck or lollies. It’s a hideous virus , and it’s wiped me out so I’m hoping my time ds bounces back a bit quicker !

Despite altrnating the calpol and ibuprofen, his temp is still high. 37.8 at the last check. Although lower than it has been. Doctor have us a prescription "just in case" but I think I will get it him and administer tonight.

Doctor also said he can go to school if I feel he's OK but I think I will keep him off. Nothing worse if he feels poorly than being at school, unable to rest

I would get the prescription, you might need it in the night. His temp is high but it is coming down.

hardyloveit · 28/02/2019 14:33

I'd listen to the doctor - 37.8 isn't a high temp. It's just at the higher end than normal which means it's being controlled by the medicine. Anything over 38 is a high temp.
Get the prescription and see if it helps - if it's tonsillitis hopefully it will be under control in a couple of days

We had a week of this before half term. Temp was consistently 40.9 for 48 hours, couldn’t get it down much with calpol, no lower than 39.

We had a week of being slumped on the sofa not drinking, then another week of getting appetite back but being really tired after any kind of activity.

Dr concluded it was flu.

cjt110 · 28/02/2019 15:15

Hes not had a wee since last night.

Hmmmm... I hate him being poorly.

Op - he sounds dehydrated if he hasn't had a wee since last night!
Is he drinking water still?
Not being rude but rather than asking for advice from non medical people on a forum if you are still worried I'd phone 111 or your doctors back
