Got an Email today from the school telling us about this creepy internet hack that tells kids to do stuff and scares them. I asked if he’d seen it and he said yes he had but it interrupted his video and got on his nerves so turned it off straight away. I told him to not pay attention to it if he sees it again and to inform me straight away. Anyone else’s kids come across it?

The Daily Fail is fuelling the hysteria nicely as usual .......

SmashedMug · 27/02/2019 15:28

I think the parents who let children roam YouTube should be more concerned about Elsa gate than momo. Much more widespread.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 27/02/2019 17:12

It angers me that they use the title of a beautiful childrens book for their - whatever you call this in English, what they are doing.

IceRebel · 27/02/2019 18:57

If you are unaware this sick human/mutant is hacking into peppa pig, fortnight, minecraft etc.

Gahhh can people stop spouting this shit, Momo is a bloody inanimate object in Japan it's not actually doing anything. Some people may be posting about it to ride on the current hysteria, but the actual object itself is still sat in Japan just looking a bit freaky. Confused

Practicallyperfectwithprosecco · 27/02/2019 19:08

My eldest is a typical 15 year old and is glued to YouTube - she had never heard of it!

Sophisticatedsarcasm · 27/02/2019 22:08

My colleague said his girls had seen it, they hadn’t heard of it until another Mum mentioned it so they mentioned it the girls and found out they had both seen it... not sure of the specifics.

There's a few more threads on this.
It's not real.
No one hacked youtube/minecraft/roblox.
No one died because of it or turned the oven on or whatever.
There's no legitimate proof of said videos, screenshots etc.
It's a fucking half chicken half woman picture of a sculpture in Japan.
Most kids that know about it know it from school, other kids or hearing about it and googling in. Because that's what kids do.

I can make a dozen fb posts I've seen it on the BBC iplayer during Doctor Who and on an add on Mumsnet. Hell I could even fake a screenshot and be ahead of the herd. Doesn't make it real tho.

IceRebel · 28/02/2019 07:12

another Mum mentioned it so they mentioned it the girls and found out they had both seen it

This sounds more like they heard about it from the mum, so decided to googled it.

RoseAndRose · 28/02/2019 07:14

It's beginning to look like an exercise in mass hysteria,

SaltySeaBird · 28/02/2019 07:28

I know people whose children have apparently seen it, and not the types prone to hysteria.

It’s not been hacked etc but from what I understand either uses advertising to pop up as a surprise mid video (not sure who would be funding although it’s surprisingly cheap to advertise on YouTube) or is coming up as next to watch on the sidebar, starting like a normal video with Momo or something bad within. The WhatsApp messaging is an older, separate and far more isolated thing.

My almost seven year old had YouTube kids on her iPad, allowed sparingly while I was in the room but without me actively watching it. I’ve used this as an excuse to remove it. I hated it anyway.

I was sent a story today about a five year old cutting her hair off becatMomo said to. I think it will be used as a scapegoat for a lot but if it makes people more aware and provides an opportunity to discuss internet safety and delete YouTube it’s no bad thing.

WhoWants2Know · 28/02/2019 07:35

Well, that's useful. Whenever we fuck something up, we can just say Momo told us to.

RoseAndRose · 28/02/2019 07:42

Exactly saltyseabird catching all sorts of people is one of the hallmarks of the phenomenon

Especially as no-one has been able to ink an actual video in which it has happened since this teen meme began (about a year ago)

Of course , the recent fuss has meant that the meme is being used rather more than it was before. The 'scare' has come about because of ill-advised warnings against something that's been listed on Snopes for months as a hoax

Catalicious · 28/02/2019 07:55

This is a helpful article. And as for schools/police sending out advice - they're responding to panic and need to be seen to be doing something. They won't be researching it, just giving general internet advice.

TeaStory · 28/02/2019 07:59

I was sent a story today about a five year old cutting her hair off becatMomo said to.

Kids cut their own hair quite often, and try to wriggle out of trouble.

When I was 5 I drew on my bedroom wall. Apparently I was insistent I hadn’t done it, the Scribble Fairies had!

Momo is a hoax. Yes schools are issuing warnings, unfortunately school staff can be just as gullible as anyone else.

Bigonesmallone3 · 28/02/2019 08:05

My eldest says he's heard about it at school but has never seen anything..
Iv tried to have a look for vids but haven't found anything..
I think they've hyped it up a lot, on one hand I can understand why because people are worried but on the other hand these jobless nerds that are making these vids are getting the attention they want and the encouragement to keep it up!

ThunderStorms · 28/02/2019 08:11

I posted this on another thread:

www.plymouthherald.co.uk/news/uk-world-news/watch-vile-momo-song-appearing-2592159

The thing is it's real because it’s online. They only need to google to find things like above and show each other and scare each other witless.

Meandmetoo · 28/02/2019 08:12

Everyone's after their 5 mins of 'fame' now and wants to be a special chosen one by momo.

Funny though that once again, no evidence of the video telling the girl to cut her hair.

If anyone can actually show such a video they'd be able to get a fair few Bob from the papers. But they won't, because the videos do. Not. Exist.

Allyg1185 · 28/02/2019 08:12

My ds hasn't heard of it but think the teachers have mentioned it at school and they sent a text message out to all the parents to have a word with their children

Thirtyrock39 · 28/02/2019 08:15

It's made my kids put the screens away for a couple of days and has definitely made me think about what they're watching more so it's been quite useful for me and mine

mentallyfacked · 28/02/2019 08:29

I personally don't believe the hype, but I have gone through internet safety with my dcs.

Also reminded them that creepy monsters don't exist and cant make them do anything

There is usually something at the heart of all the rumours, and it sounds like your husband might have seen something similar to a "screamer", designed to pop up and shock viewers. Those have been around as long as the rick roll.

notsurewhatshappening · 28/02/2019 09:20

DD asked me who Momo is last night. Her friend at school was saying 'Momo is coming to get you'. DD reported it to the teacher who then spoke to the whole class about not scare mongering. I just said three are scary faces on some bits of youtube so we won't be using it for a bit but Netflix is fine. She wasn't really bothered and I'm happy with the way the school dealt with it.

Some parents are showing their young DCS the image of the sculpture to warn them what's going on... surely that's a bit misguided as it will just scare them?

I'm not going on FB or Twitter at the moment as I just don't want to see the face. It's nasty and haunting.

Newsername · 28/02/2019 09:22

😂😂🤣🤣🤣 that Momo “song” isn’t really a song is it?! It’s a kid saying some words to a random tune and some ominous strings in the background. People need to get over this. My children have been on YouTube everyday this week and they’re fine.

SmashedMug · 28/02/2019 09:26

I'm cynical and think the haircut one was for Facebook likes and hairdresser publicity. Kid comes for short haircut. Hairdresser cuts side. Cue sad face photo. Post to Facebook with momo bollocks. More than 30k comments. Win.
