Period starter kit for DD

ChandelierSail · 25/02/2019 17:58

My DD is nearly 10 and I want to get a period starter kit ready for her for when she starts her period.

So I'm looking for recommendations of what to put in it.

Thanks.

To be fair it is a good idea to get some supplies in and letting her keep them in her room. I wouldn't go down the whole chocolates/flowers route some people seem to do. I was mortified my dad and brother even knew but periods let alone knew I had started them. Low key is best.

Budsbegginingspringinsight · 25/02/2019 19:22

Do pads come in one size... don't girls start with pads?

Budsbegginingspringinsight · 25/02/2019 19:23

I think picking something up casually in boots is a great Idea.

It may be helpful to know that Asda sell multipacks of black pants in sizes to fit girls and teens.

ThunderStorms · 25/02/2019 19:43

Don’t get the chocolate obsession. In a few years they’ll probably be trying to break the chocolate/ comfort eating connection that you’re happily starting.

CricketSnicket · 25/02/2019 19:51

tampons when she is just starting out?

The idea is that they're there when she feels ready to try them. That could be months or even years later.

If she was using one of everything all at once, THAT would be excessive!!

PhilomenaButterfly · 25/02/2019 19:53

December I've also put a bath bomb and some luxury soap in!

PhilomenaButterfly · 25/02/2019 19:58

Thunder she's already completely in control of her chocolate consumption thanks.

reallyanotherone · 25/02/2019 20:39

Whatever you do don't give it to her before she has started, I didn't start my periods until I was 14 which was so much later than my friends, I was so impatient I desperately wanted them to start, and this would have been quite frustrating for my irrational self!

I agree, for the opposite reason! My mum bought me my first pads etc at 10/11. From then on everything was linked to starting my periods. If i had stomach ache, it might be your period. If i was upset, it might be your period. If i wasn’t hungry, or i fancied some chocolate, it might be your period. It got so i felt i couldn’t complain about anything, because i’d just get “it might be your period” with no attempt to consider other causes. I had a UTI for a week once before seeing a dr which was put down to it might be my period.

Irony was if she’d opened her eyes i didn’t even start developing until i was 13, and periods didn’t start until 15. I was like mother, i have no boobs, no pubic hair, i’m still 4’5, no signs of puberty at all, of course it’s not my fucking period!

Oh and i hated pads, right from the start. I went straight to tampons, and i’d always buy some to give dd a chance to use them if she chooses. If they are developed enough for periods, tampons are an option.

girlofgold do you have a link for the diary doll pants please. Can't seem to find any for younger girls.

Girlofgold · 25/02/2019 20:45

Bobkate - they look like they're called pretty clever pants now. Expensive but they just get wheeled out every month so a worthwhile investment. I wear them day 2/3. Think it's carol smilies company - I bought them here www.highstreettv.com/pretty-clever-pants-2pk-offer.html

Girlofgold · 25/02/2019 20:46

Ps the 6-8 is small enough.

stripes1 · 25/02/2019 20:50

Remember to take your basic bag on holiday with you. I started in the evening on holiday in France and my mum had everything at home but nothing on holiday. Couldn’t buy anything till the next morning. Was a horrible experience.

RoseDog · 25/02/2019 20:50

ChandelierSail if you have heavy periods and your mother had heavy periods any "teen products" will be a waste of time and money, my DD still has most of her teen pack, she started her period 5 years ago, I should have known from my first period and my mums period issues!

The diary doll pants were a life saver for my dd, get them in black though the staining doesn't come out the lighter coloured packs!

anniehm · 25/02/2019 20:53

I gave my DD's a make up case to put towels in and just showed them where they are kept - in the bathroom unit. No need to make a song and dance about it, make it feel normal. Once they had started I bought the thinner tampons and put them there ensuring the leaflet was inside the box (I normally just tip them out into the drawer!). They just help themselves though dd2 who boards had an annoying habit of swiping the whole lot rather than remembering to pick them up when I take her for the tuck run (which I pay for anyway), I end up pulling out suitcases to find leftovers from trips.

anniehm · 25/02/2019 20:57

Oh I can recommend the pants designed by Annabel Croft they have a discrete waterproof liner, ideal for sports just in case of leaks (I use them as I have a mum bladder and sports cause problems!)

bobkate · 25/02/2019 21:11

Thank you girlofgold. My dd is a worries so I think these would just be a good investment for her peace of mind.

Jamhandprints · 25/02/2019 21:30

A lot of girls are using reusable pads these days. Many are concerned about the environment but also they come in pretty fabrics and they will never run out. You can buy them on Amazon.

Budsbegginingspringinsight · 25/02/2019 21:34

What a strange name for these pants.. diary doll!

ItsLikeRainOnYourWeddingDay · 25/02/2019 22:12

@reallyanotherone

Totally agree with you. I got one pack of the crappiest cheapest maxi pads my mum could find. I used to use my pocket money to buy decent branded towels. It was shit.

StellaRae · 25/02/2019 22:19

Bookmarking for link to diary doll pants - thanks!

Summer23 · 25/02/2019 22:22

Definitely a good idea op - best to be prepared just in case she’s not with you when it starts. I will do the same for my DD. I wouldn’t want her to have to go looking for this at school.

CluedoAddict · 25/02/2019 22:54

My Dd's take a make up bag to school. They take pads/tampons, spare knickers, nappy sacks and hand gel.

We have a big plastic box in the bathroom with lots of different pads and tampons. Asda and M&S are good for black knickers in small sizes.

Fluffyears · 25/02/2019 23:33

I had the worst towels that were super thick as they were cheap. I leaked a lot as wings werea god send. I am very heavy and sufferedsever cramping that made me throw up and collapse. I once begged my mum to put a knife in me to end the pain, maybe I just wasn’t ‘resilient’ ffs it’s these attitudes that don’t help women. We should understand that fucking awful cramp is a reality for many women.

Bunnyjo · 25/02/2019 23:56

At primary, the HLTA had a box of which she kept stocked with pads, spare knickers and other items, just in case. As I was 10 when I started my periods, I felt reassured by this; I remember the distress I felt at coming on my period at school and having nothing to change into. I didn't want my DD to go through that.

When DD started secondary school, I gave her a flat make up style bag that I packed with teen Lil-lets sanitary pads, travel pack of wipes, Nurofen sachet, small hand gel and spare pair of knickers. She just keeps it in the bottom of her school bag and refills it as and when needed.
