Period starter kit for DD

ChandelierSail · 25/02/2019 17:58

My DD is nearly 10 and I want to get a period starter kit ready for her for when she starts her period.

So I'm looking for recommendations of what to put in it.

Thanks.

A pack of each type of disposable pad
A pack of each type of tampon
Cotton reusable pads

That's excessive.

And tampons when she is just starting out?

NotANotMan · 25/02/2019 18:46

Yy to that!
I've never needed a hot water bottle or painkillers for a period in 25 years of having them

Girlofgold · 25/02/2019 18:47

Eh? Periods are painful for around 40% of women every month and also 80% of women report pain at some point.

@cricketmum84 it's nothing to do with resilience Hmm
I'm perfectly resilient but yes I needed painkillers age 9/10 when my period pains went down my back, legs and stomach along with flooding every time I moved
I know some people are lucky to have mildly painful or pain free periods but mine are painful, fainting, losing 50ml a day and have been since I started at 9

YesQueen · 25/02/2019 18:48

And I skipped through a massive spinal surgery of 5hrs without a painkiller after so I'm pretty resilient - because the pain after that was much less than my periods!

Witchend · 25/02/2019 18:49

My girls would have died with embarrassment if I'd done anything like that, and absolutely no way would they have countenanced having something to put in their school bag. Grin

Both were also mid teens before starting and if I'd done something like that at 10yo then five years later they wouldn't have been in the best condition.

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 25/02/2019 18:51

What's with the periods posts today .

notanothernam · 25/02/2019 18:52

Whatever you do don't give it to her before she has started, I didn't start my periods until I was 14 which was so much later than my friends, I was so impatient I desperately wanted them to start, and this would have been quite frustrating for my irrational self!

PhilomenaButterfly · 25/02/2019 18:53

I've put one together for DD, it also contains pyjamas, a hottie, a blanket, a DVD and a book and will contain chocolate. She already has an emergency kit in a pencil case in her school bag.

Bigdreams · 25/02/2019 18:54

I'm not sure I like the idea of a 10 year old being in charge of their own paracetamol. Definitely don't do this if they're taking it to school.

Teddytizer · 25/02/2019 18:55

Can anyone help? I am looking for a puberty book for my 10 year old girl, that has all the info in about how her body will change/works but I don’t want her to read about sex, yet!! Any suggestions? Thanks Ax

dementedpixie · 25/02/2019 18:56

What's wrong with knowing about sex at age 10? Have you not discussed it already?

SileneOliveira · 25/02/2019 18:58

My DD would have been mortified if i'd presented her with a "period starter kit".

You buy a selection of pads, leave them in the bathroom and make sure she knows where they are and what they're for.

And that's it.

Nicknacky · 25/02/2019 19:02

I just got the lillets starter kit. We didn’t make a big deal out of it, just bought it when we were in Boots one day.

What’s the thing about putting chocolate in?!

It’s a fact of life, don’t make it into a big thing.

PhilomenaButterfly · 25/02/2019 19:03

Teddy she'll get the class at school either this year or next year depending on whether she's in yr5 or 6. How long were you planning to keep her wrapped up in cotton wool?

PhilomenaButterfly · 25/02/2019 19:06

Nicknacky DD doesn't see it as a big thing, I just want to give her a treat. Chocolate's very comforting when you've got cramps and you flooded at school. I wish someone had given me chocolate.

LetBartletBeBartlet · 25/02/2019 19:07

My 12yo has just started, and a year or so ago I gave her a zipped bag with pads, spare pants and wipes in. It was a practical solution.

A few of her friends started their periods in Yr6, and she's after quite a lot of her Yr7 cohort despite being one of the eldest.

I don't think it's too early. I wouldn't have gone to the extreme of chocolate and DVDs though.

Parker231 · 25/02/2019 19:07

@Teddy - she’s 10? Of course she will know about sex - 10 year old discuss this, particularly if one of her friends has an older sister. You are doing her no favours if you haven’t discussed this earlier.

ChandelierSail · 25/02/2019 19:09

Well my plan was to give her a little bag with some pads etc to keep just in case. A change of underwear is also a good idea.

I'm not planning on making a big thing of it but making sure she's prepared is a good thing.

Thank you for all the suggestions.

We bought some lil-lets teen pads and a 6 pack of black knickers from the supermarket. DD put a few bits in a little bag to go in her school bag and that was that.
Once she’d started we picked up various brands of pads and tampons to try, and make her own mind up what suited.

At school there is a notice in the girls’ loo to ‘ask matron for the red box’ if you need sanpro for any reason (caught short, poverty etc).

cropcirclesinthefields · 25/02/2019 19:13

I put a bag together for dsd for when she started and she uses it and I've just said to text when it needs topping up. Do it but don't make a big deal about it.

NotANotMan · 25/02/2019 19:13

I don’t want her to read about sex, yet!!

Why not?

AvonCallingBarksdale · 25/02/2019 19:14

Just to give a different perspective for those who don’t “get” this and think it’s cringe/twee/whatever... My DM told me nothing about periods and never bought me sanpro unless I literally begged for it. I was 14 when I started by which time she was 50 and no longer regularly buying pads. I would have LOVED to have had a starter kit. Just saying Smile

I'd highly recommend these for starter packs

December2018 · 25/02/2019 19:15

All I want when I'm on my period is bath bombs & chocolate to be fair....
