I've never been to either and would like to try one. Which one shall I go for?

Lidl!

IggyPoppers · 25/02/2019 10:09

Can I ask why?

Chimchar · 25/02/2019 10:09

Oooh. That's a choice!
I like them both for different reasons.

Aldi for the skin care. Lidl for the fresh bakery.

Both! Grin

TheQueef · 25/02/2019 10:11

It's like asking me to choose a kid Confused
Aldi just edges it for me but if you are being Aldi you will need a monthly cheese visit to Lidl.

witchy89 · 25/02/2019 10:12

Lidl! Aldi don't do any loose fruit or veg, it's all plastic wrapped. Well, in my local one it all is anyway. I find Lidl easier to navigate too.

Sparklingbrook · 25/02/2019 10:13

Neither. Don't get too excited!

Lumene · 25/02/2019 10:13

Aldi

joggingon · 25/02/2019 10:14

Lidl. No idea why. Love it. Hate Aldi. I'm not a main shopper there though

tisonlymeagain · 25/02/2019 10:18

Lidl has a good bakery and more branded items but I prefer the shopping experience of Aldi. Lidl only ever seems to have one till open whenever I go and it takes ages.

blibblibs · 25/02/2019 10:20

Oh, I use both but get most from Aldi I think. There jive bars are lovely.
Lidl is closer and I go there to get big bags of pasta (78p) that Aldi don't do and the apple and orange juice is better from Lidl and the bakery. But Aldi sauces are nicer.
Don't go expecting a Tesco like shopping experience though.
Oh and both have much nicer chocolate than Cadbury.

IggyPoppers · 25/02/2019 10:23

Do either do free range high welfare meat? Organic veg? I remember reading a thread on here about some sort of bagging procedure? You go to the side and then bag? Which one is that?

Aldi vote here.

Aldi have organic veg but it is limited - carrot, onions and potatoes in our store.

Aldi animal welfare -

I think Lidl is a bit better but the bakery smells so disgusting I don't go in if I can help it.

DoneLikeAKipper · 25/02/2019 10:31

Lidl bakery is amazing. I had a lemon cheesecake pastry the other week, I almost walked back for more (I haven’t seen them since though Sad). I also love their cheese and chive crisps, though unfortunately you don’t always get a good pack.

I prefer Aldi for general shop. Their nappies are great (if you have babies/toddlers), compared to Lidl’s which are not. Sadly our closest Aldi is a pain to walk to and has no bus route so I rarely go these days.

You go to the side and then bag? Which one is that?

It’s both. The cashiers are expected to put all shopping through at Superman speed, so if you have a big shop it all goes back in the basket/trolley and packed at the side tables. It can feel very pushy to start with, but at least the lines move quickly.

formerbabe · 25/02/2019 10:45

Aldi has a better freezer section in my opinion.

TheQueef · 25/02/2019 10:45

Bagging - buy the 50p Ikea blue bags. Empty on conveyer, open out bag show empty trolley, replace bag and let checkout do their worst. They fill on their own Grin

Lidl store bakery items have less sugar so don't last well but they taste really good.

Sexnotgender · 25/02/2019 10:46

Definitely Lidl. I love Lidl. Aldi I can take or leave.

Notwiththeseknees · 25/02/2019 10:49

Lidl for me too. WineWineWineWineWineWine

Meet0nTheledge · 25/02/2019 10:49

I've never seen anyone pack at the back table in either, most people manage by having big bags open and ready in their trolley and going quickly.

Lidl edges it for me because of the bakery, but I tend only to buy basics such as fruit, veg, cheese, cooked meat, flour, sugar, bread, washing powder in either, the processed foods have nearly always disappointed (cooking sauces, table sauces, cereals, biscuits, ready meals). Also check fruit and veg carefully, the quality is quite variable, Aldi apples always seem to be bruised for example.

IggyPoppers · 25/02/2019 11:24

Right - I'm off for my first trip. Thanks for the tips! Our food bill is way too high. Hopefully I don't come back with a bunch of random stuff!

IggyPoppers · 25/02/2019 11:24

I'm going to try Lidl

You need these cheesecakes in your life - lidl

Aldi or Lidl?
Sexnotgender · 25/02/2019 13:16

Interesting donelikeakipper we’re using Lidl nappies for our new baby and think they’re great!

Not planning on using them for long though as got reusables but he’s only 3 weeks and I’m knackered so taking my time!
