I've never been to either and would like to try one. Which one shall I go for?

Lidl by far, although I can’t quite put my finger on why!

BlueMerchant · 25/02/2019 13:20

We like both Aldi and Lidl. We like different things in each but neither are good for a full 'big' weekly shop for us. We always need to go to one of the bigger supermarkets too!

IggyPoppers · 25/02/2019 14:13

The yogurt was a good deal although I've yet to taste it. But how do they get away with the blatant rip off packaging from yeo valley?

Yeo valley pot 1.48, Lidl pot .99

Tried shopping in Aldi. I assume Lidl is the same. Horrible experience at the till, they practically throw your items at you. No time to pack.

BlueMerchant · 25/02/2019 14:37

Norpack v Lurpack is another one IggyPoppers. They look identical. I don't know how either.

3in4years · 25/02/2019 15:00

Aldi. But the chocolate and crisps are vile.

Meet0nTheledge · 25/02/2019 15:05

Norpack might look like Lurpak but it doesn't taste like it.

Adeste · 25/02/2019 15:07

I use trolleybags and no aldi/lidl cashier has beaten me yet Smile

I love aldi because it’s so straightforward. The price is always in the same place and always there and always correct. I can tot up as I go round and there are no surprises at the til.

IggyPoppers · 25/02/2019 15:30

DH having none of even the Lurpak I bought. He claims in has veg oil in it and has turned his nose up. Nappies did seem cheap but they didn't have the pull-up type ones so no good to me. Olives were a win. I've bought sausages but passed on the chicken because it didn't say "outdoor" or "free range".

Lidl bakery you say? A friend of mine saw a rat in the bread at our local branch.

DGRossetti · 25/02/2019 16:14

We've found Lidl generally good, (Wine especially ... loads of very good sub £5.00 bottles Grin) but Aldi does seem to do a few things differently - exotic dried pastas (not available from any of the big name supermarkets) and tinned salmon at 1/2 the price of the bigger ones.

SuziQ10 · 25/02/2019 16:44

My food shop is a lot cheaper when I shop at Aldi. My other option Is Sainsbury's.
I'm not near a Lidl so can't comment, but I think the Aldi produce is very good - and cheap. It takes me half the time to shop there too because the store is smaller than other supermarkets.

I just don't like the aesthetic of the store, it's not the cleanest and things aren't always easy to find. The checkout is a pain. But if I save £25 on a weekly shop, it's worth it!

Try both if you can, op.

DoneLikeAKipper · 25/02/2019 16:52

@Sexnotgender, you’re better than me! I had all the good intentions of using the reusable ones but never did. Now have a baby and a 3 year old who has a pathological fear of the toilet. Years of trying different brands, and definitely found Lidl to be far poorer than Aldi ones. Boots are my go-to ones though, with ASDA as my other opinion (I think they do the best baby wipes).

(Sorry to hijack the thread for a moment there!).

Is it Lidl that apparently has the cherry Jaffa cakes? I’m sure I read that here recently.

isseywithcats · 25/02/2019 16:55

Aldi for me ours closed down for refurbishment and i had to go to lidl really didnt like it couldnt find half what i wanted as i know where everything is in aldis, didnt like the lay out and think the bakery stuff is expensive and not that special ended up with half what i would buy in aldis

maybe we are lucky but ours is a good one, the veg is fresh and lasts the meats are good quality but i tend to pay a little more and buy the specially selected range, the deli section has loads of choice and their jars of sauces are very good, only thing i havent really liked from there was basic spaghetti hoops as they are very sweet, gone back to heinz ones, and their butter substitute really is no patch on anchor spreadable but i save a fortune going in there
LittleCandle · 25/02/2019 16:56

We prefer Lidl, although we started off in Aldi. What puts us off Aldi now is the fact that our local one is so grubby. It was done up a year or so ago, but looked just as grubby after it was newly renovated as it had before. We haven't had anything bad from Lidl at all and our current new favourite is the frozen long claw mushroom and stilton wellingtons - to die for!

A lot of people who claim to not like either suffer, IMHO, from food snobbery. Yes, there are certain things we buy from Tesco, but they are few and far between.

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 25/02/2019 16:57

Aldi, because the store is new and easy to get around. The local Lidl is small and old. We have trolley bags, just open them in the trolley at the checkout, put things in the order you want them on the conveyor belt and then chuck stuff in the right bag.

I like Aldi chocolate, the fruit and veg are generally good at ours and there have been some good buys from the frozen section- gammon roast and lamb shanks are particular favourites.

GrumpyOlderBloke · 25/02/2019 17:05

Lidl. Decent stuff at consistent and fair pricing. Trustworthy.

Aldi seem to have hired some ex-Tesco 'marketers' or just imported some of their tricks. Multi-packs where the unit cost is higher than singles, large packs where unit cost higher than smaller. White label versions where the unit cost of the actual ingredient is higher than the 'premium' version, etc. Some fruit or vegetable priced by weight and some by number and no readily accessible scales. So shopping takes longer and my mental arithmetic gets a workout every damned time.

No more trustworthy than Tesco nowadays.

The local one also sometimes MOVES THINGS TO A DIFFERENT PLACE.

Local Lidl has had the same layout since they first opened - Yay, man shopper heaven.

BUT, both have an odd number of aisles so it impossible to shop efficiently and you are forced to cover the same part of at least one aisle more than once.

TeaforTwoBiscuitOrThree · 25/02/2019 17:10

Lidl all the way. aldi is fine for daily essentials, but Lidl's fruit and veg is so much better. I like their themed weeks too.

Meet0nTheledge · 26/02/2019 11:52

Yes, the odd number of aisles thing really irritates me too, adds to the congestion of already small spaces.

NameChanger22 · 26/02/2019 11:55

Definitely Aldi. I don't like my local Lidl at all, it's dirty, disorganised and a lot of things aren't that cheap, although they do have a good bakery.

Angelinthenightx · 26/02/2019 12:38

Id say try both we got to aldi but a new lidl opened and it was so nice lovely store. We shop around now.lidl is a tiny bit more expensive like pennies more so isnt a big deal ,over all lidl is ahead due to the new store.

HappyGoGoLucky · 03/03/2019 22:05

Aldi!

I remember going Aldi for the very first time in 2007 and that was horrendous. The food their was disgusting. Never went back since! Then about 7 years ago, I really needed bread and milk and Aldi was the closest supermarket near me, I had to bite the bullet and go there. I had a look around and I still found it dreadful and thought their food tasted cheap and vile.

4 years ago we had to really cut down on our spending and we went to Lidl. I liked it there, but then we moved and Aldi was only 10 min walk from where I live so I decided to give it another go because I had my little one by then and someone said Aldi nappies was really good.

So I decided to go... and this time, I've never looked back. I have been shopping at Aldi for 2 years and I honestly cannot find fault in it at all. I always get my main shop there and I haven't been to any major supermarkets for months. I enjoy their fruit and vegetables, plenty of variety to choose from - especially when it is super 6, so it gives you a change of fruit and veg each week.

I really recommend ready to cook chicken stir fry, specially selected butter chicken sauce, buy lots of snacks for little one like malt loaf, rice cakes, raisins, etc. Their nappies and baby wipes are brilliant too. Absolutely cannot fault it. My DS has never leaked out of their nappies and the wipes have plenty of wetness and moisture so it cleans their bottoms properly.

The ONLY thing that we dislike from there are the frozen chicken, so we buy fresh and freeze it into individual portions. Other than that, fantastic value for money and their products have really come on leaps and bounds! I've saved hundreds each month.

SrSteveOskowski · 03/03/2019 22:28

Aldi. Everytime. I can't get on with Lidl at all, but then my neighbour says the complete opposite so I suppose it's what you're used too.
