Has anyone else been driven nuts by hay fever today?

I thought I was coming down with a cold but then my eyes and throat started itching so badly I could have scratched them with twigs. Took an antihistamine and symptoms disappeared for about 40 minutes. Back aagin now. Met office says there is no pollen until Mid March so that's when they resume the pollen count. But they also say hazel and alder are out now.
Any advice? I have so much work to catch up on and I can hardly see to work, my eyes are streaming so badly.

Is cetirizine decent? It’s the type my GP prescribed me years ago and I just buy it over the counter since then.

TrainSong · 28/02/2019 07:37

Muddy I think cetirizine and loratadine both work well as non-drowsy (should say 'less drowsy') antihistamines. Apparently you can safely mix them with piriton, so use Piriton when you need sleep and the others for day time use.

cetirizine is usually the first choice.
it's very safe and non drowsy.
next one up (otc) is loratadine.
piriton makes some people really drowsy, so should be taken with caution.

what also works well for some people is steroid nasal spray. do read the label!

Omg I've been convinced I had a sinus infection for the last week, my face has been absolutely aching, but I took an antihistamine yesterday because my dermographism was playing up and all face pain magically disappeared soon after Hmm.

@Muddy I find cetrizine works better for me for skin related allergies/itching and loratadine works better for actual hayfever. Cet. absolutely knocks my OH out even though it's "non-drowsy" so be careful. I would say Lor. is more non drowsy.

My eye (one onlyHmm) was horrific and the endless sneezing driving my colleagues nuts, and also new for this year an itchy neck and scalp! I got the Piriton nasal spray and Optrex eyedrops which helped the incessant eye itching, then a miracle cure that is Fexofenadine (Telfast) from the doc. First time in years that I've had to use drugs for hayfever Angry

Finally got to see GP today and got a prescription ofr Fexofenadine and some Ventolin. He was really surprised it had started to early, and so was the chemist. I felt like saying: look at your shelves. There's only one packet of Loratidine left and no Piriton. Seems like everyone has had it bad this week.

Bastard bastard trees. Literally the worst I've ever been.

My tongue is swollen and scallopy, my eyes look like they've been punched and my skin is itchy everywhere. I lightly scratched it and where I did, the red lines came up and stayed visible for an hour. I am wheezy too.

I am on loratadine but may venture to the gp. I have a steroid nose spray but this isn't nasal.

Evil evil catkins
