Has anyone else been driven nuts by hay fever today?

I thought I was coming down with a cold but then my eyes and throat started itching so badly I could have scratched them with twigs. Took an antihistamine and symptoms disappeared for about 40 minutes. Back aagin now. Met office says there is no pollen until Mid March so that's when they resume the pollen count. But they also say hazel and alder are out now.
Any advice? I have so much work to catch up on and I can hardly see to work, my eyes are streaming so badly.

Fexofendaine knocks me out. I’m a proper drug lightweight. Off to the pharmacy for loratadine tomorrow. And drops. Can’t brlieve I’m doing that in February.

PenguinPandas · 24/02/2019 21:16

Yes. Wasn't sure if suffered from hayfever despite doctors saying I do. Thought had cold then notice eyes were terrible and so thought hayfever. Then DD gets 2 pets rabbits and 1 bunny with hay appears in our room. Supercute but I came out in a rash over neck, arms, body started itching all over, started finding breathing more difficult, face and neck looked swollen, started to get chest pain and terrible headache, cold and running eyes. Had to get DH to help but now bedding washed and hoovered and back to just cold, headache and eyes. The hayfever tablets help but send me to sleep.

S o thats what it is, i thought i had come down with a very heavy cold, sneezing about 6 times in a row, never usually get colds, but now i know i will take antihistamines
Thanks everyone

Yes! Itchy eyes and runny nose!

spinn · 24/02/2019 21:42

Yep, mine and the kids started at the beginning of this week - I always start end Feb/beg March so was ready for it this year and been on the antihistamines for the last week building it up.

I'm assuming this warm period has triggered it a couple of weeks earlier than usual.

sackrifice · 24/02/2019 21:45

Yes, started today. Bastarding hayfever.

DharmaInitiativeLady · 24/02/2019 21:51

Me too. Fexofenadine doesn't touch me. I have an annual kenalog injection around march time and it lasts me all season...Bloody amazing not so much as a sniffle

TrainSong · 25/02/2019 11:27

Can't get a GP appointment. Will have to live with over the counter stuff for now but need new inhaler as it also triggers asthma and my last one has run out.
It's FEBRUARY! [despair emoji]

Definitely. I was wondering whether I had eaten something that I was allergic to, and then it dawned on me. my throat is really itchy, as is my mouth. My eyes and nose are fine (for now).

11 yo DS suffered badly last year (like me, he seems to be getting worse each year). OTC medicines like loratadine don't touch either of us. Should I be takin him to the GP sooner rather than later?

Helpmytrousershavesplit · 25/02/2019 11:46

Oh God my nose is streaming and feels like there are ants up there biting me! So stuffed up! I've never taken anti-histamine tabets before - would someone recommend some? I've used hayfever nasal sprays etc but they don't seem to help.

Iruka · 25/02/2019 11:47

I was just about to go out for a nice walk but hearing this I might just hermetically seal my flat and stay indoors Grin

FurryDogMother · 25/02/2019 12:18

Definitely tree pollen - my friend remarked how she thought she saw a yew tree 'smoking' earlier in the week - it turned out to be clouds of pollen, so there's loads of it about. Am lucky enough not to suffer from hayfever, but really feel for those of you who do!

adiposegirl2 · 25/02/2019 12:30

Me too!
Started last Monday itchy dry eyes- I'm still looking for the speck of sand causing all my eye irritation. I just know it's got to be in my eyes- somewhereWink

RiverTam · 25/02/2019 12:30

DD (9) has been suffering, she didn't get to sleep last night till about 10 because she couldn't breathe properly.

Does anyone know if she could use a nasal spray? She's been on Loratadine for about a month already and we've got the eye drops.

Cadsuane · 25/02/2019 12:33

Yesterday I ended up taking a second Fexofenadine. I'm normally prescribed one in the morning and Piriton a night but took a second at night. Last year the GP suggested taking 2 every day and if its going to be that kind of season I might need to get my prescription changed.

Lottapianos · 25/02/2019 12:36

Same here! Eyes and nose itching like fury. I thought I was allergic to a new hand cream. Someone asked me last week if I thought it could be hayfever and I nearly told them not to be stupid!

I'm taking one a day antihistamines from Superdrug and they've brought the symptoms down to about 10% of what they were, but they don't last all day. Thinking of taking a second one in the evening

RavenLG · 25/02/2019 12:58

Oh no! I feel for you OP. Mine hasn't started yet but only because grass get's me so I tend to be later in the year.

Opticrom eye drops are the best thing for my eyes, sting like a BITCH for a 30 seconds or so but really does stop them itching.. for a while. You can get them on Amazon! Might be worth a try. I also find an air purifier in the house (especially bedroom overnight) helps!

Lemoncakestrudel · 25/02/2019 12:59

Don’t know why the Met Office is saying that now. I look ages ago and it said Decenber is the only non-pollen month.

TrainSong · 25/02/2019 13:38

I've been indoors all day and it's gorgeous outside. Got to go out late afternoon to work, though, so hoping it's eased off a bit by then.

It's been bloody awful today. And I live in a forest

SockQueen · 25/02/2019 18:08

Maybe - I thought I was just getting a cold but could easily be hayfever instead.

youarenotkiddingme · 25/02/2019 18:09

My eyes have been bugging me this evening and I wondered if hayfever.

I get a certain feeling and it's been just like that!

megletthesecond · 25/02/2019 18:10

DS had it last week. He was virtually sneezing his words out. A dose of cetirizine sorted him out.

I gave him some as a precautionary measure before school today.

spinn · 25/02/2019 19:22

@WellTidy yes take him now, the earlier you start the meds the better.

My 11yo is under allergy paed his is that bad and was given fexonfenadine (usually only for 12plus) this year to try and control it.

I have 2x 180mg fexo daily on my prescription and I tried just one last week as a start to the season, after 3-4 days I had to up to 2 a day already. This does not bode well for the rest of the season.

TrainSong · 26/02/2019 09:35

It doesn't, does it, spinn? I've never had it so bad so early on, or had to double my daily dose from the outset. Now I'm feeling so sleepy and headachy from the side effects. Really hope the season doesn;'t continue like this.
