Everyone gets a bit overwhelmed trying to Kondo their house right?

When does it start to feel good?

Ellieboolou27 · 23/02/2019 21:12

When you stop doing it 😂
Seriously, I spent months getting frustrated at never having reached the height of minimal. Clutter breeds in my house, it seems to accumulate out of nowhere.

elQuintoConyo · 23/02/2019 21:18

I took it with a GIANT pinch of salt!

Just have a weekly round up with a binbag, sort out The Clothes Chair, put things back in their rightful place.

Duck the restGrin

Kerberos · 23/02/2019 21:20

Just love the bits that are done. My sock drawer is a thing of beauty. Rest of house is next on the list...

madcatladyforever · 23/02/2019 21:22

I think I'm better than Kondo but then I live on my own and there is nobody here to mess it up. It's other people that ruin it

CakeNinja · 23/02/2019 21:23

Is this the minimalist code of conduct that’s been a craze, similar that Hinch woman’s weird behaviour?
I don’t know much about this Kondo woman, I keep my house clutter free as much as possible, regularly get rid of things that we don’t use anymore, don’t keep clothes the dc or us grown ups don’t wear, pass on toys, throw paperwork in the bin and so on.
Little and often.
I’m often to be seen on Facebook giving things away, I just hate having too much ‘stuff’.

picklemepopcorn · 23/02/2019 21:24

Don't Kondo the house. Kondo the kitchen, or your wardrobe. Or a cupboard in the kitchen and a drawer in your wardrobe.

burritofan · 23/02/2019 21:24

It feels better when you actually get the stuff out of the house. The in-between bit where you've decluttered, say, your kitchen, but your hallway is now FULL of the stuff for charity/eBay/the tip, is the actual worst.

SilverySurfer · 23/02/2019 21:26

No idea, I tried watching her on Netflix and turned off when she started rambling on about items giving joy. Nor do I want to fold all my clothes into tiny rectangles I'll stick with my clutter but good luck if it works for you.

NorthEndGal · 23/02/2019 21:35

Fuck
I have no staying power, unless it's for bad habits, and I need to get this done.

Our landlord has decided to put the house on the market, the real estate lady is already making noises about staging, and it is making me see my home through new eyes.

I didn't 'Kondo' the whole house. It just would have been overwhelming when I got everything out. I just did a bit at a time. The bathroom was a good place to start, chucking cosmetics that were out of date, bath toys that had gone manky, finishing the bottle of evil tasting mouthwash before I opened the nice one and carbooting those bottles of shampoo I'd bought, tried a couple of times and realised didn't work for me. And I've been very good about not buying any more unnecessary gubbins for the bathroom. I know my few products that I use and just buy them as and when needed so it doesn't all mount up. So the bathroom is still fine a year on (and I am THE most untidy clutterbug you could meet!). I also wouldn't do what she says and get all your clothes from all over the house and go through them together - they'd all need putting back in the right places and that's a palaver! I just tackled the wardrobe, then the chest of drawers, then the airing cupboard, then the ironing basket. It is helpful to hold things and look at them and ask yourself if you would really hand-on-heart miss it, but I don't thank stuff before I chuck it as that sort of humanizes inanimate objects and makes it harder!

I have done the whole house now, let's not cunt under the stairs, just by tackling it a bit at a time. Every Sunday I go around and find 3 further things to get rid of. I intend to do this until I genuinely can't find a thing I wouldn't miss.

FurrySlipperBoots · 23/02/2019 21:37

Oh dear, that was a dodgy typo! COUNT under the stairs, count...

Ellieboolou27 · 23/02/2019 22:17

😂😂😂 at the auto correct - just about sums up kondo

IAmRubbishAtDIY · 23/02/2019 22:55

I think you've all misunderstood Marie Kondo, she's not for minimalism, she's for getting rid of the stuff you don't like/need. That's not minimalism.

SilverySurfer · 24/02/2019 03:34

I don't misunderstand her, I think her primary objective is selling you books and making lots of lovely money.

WellThisIsShit · 24/02/2019 04:27

I’m trying to do it now, and it sort of works, but am adapting it to my own life and home... and capabilities (!)

I like the way she goes from easier stuff, the non emotional stuff to the harder categories. But some of her categories are ridiculous as they are just way too big, so it leaves it very unbalanced.

I won’t be getting out all my clothes at once, but I do think looking at all trousers together, then all tops etc helps you to see how much stuff you really have lurking at the back of the wardrobe or drawers etc.

Tomorrow, we’re giving away a toddler bike that my DS LOVED for years and really found too hard to give away although he’s 8 yrs old now. But we did the Marie Kondo goodbye thing and DS has said he’s ok with it going to the charity shop now. We’ll see tomorrow I guess! I do feel terribly mean making him give it away but we live in such an over crowded flat we just don’t have room for it ...

elQuintoConyo · 24/02/2019 09:20

My wardrobe is organised by trousers/tops/cardiac/skirts/dresses - I thought everyone's was.

I had shoeboxes in my drawers to separate knickers, socks, pants and tights since university (I left in 97). Only now I use IKEA drawer dividers.

Now I'm thinking "holy fuckbalks, I could've been making a ton of money out of this logic!' AngryGrin

YogaWannabe · 24/02/2019 09:27

Oh I’m so happy to see this thread! My house was getting me so down, there were clothes bursting out of everywhere! I didn’t just have a clothes chair, I had a clothes table, wardrobe cupboard, floor, squished down sides of things etc.
I downloaded Spark Joy (much more concise!) and listened to it while walking ddog yesterday.
I stuck on a long cleaning/cooking playlist on YouTube and 8 black sacks plus a total makeover of DDs room and move around of my room later, I have finally tackled Clothes!
Today I do books (terrified but buzzing as the difference already is immense!)

IWannaSeeHowItEnds · 24/02/2019 09:32

I know it's not what you asked, but you are under no obligation to let your landlord or agent either stage your home or show anyone around at all. Even if you signed a contract agreeing, the law says you have the right to quiet enjoyment of your home.
Unless the LL is giving you a massive rent discount I'd be telling them to sell when I'd moved out.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 24/02/2019 09:46

You don't need Kondo, or any other self-styled 'expert'.
Just tackle one cupboard or drawer at a time - chuck/charity shop/eBay what you never use or wear, etc.

Tidy/organise what's left.
Very simple.
You have to hand it to MK, though, for making pots of money out something that would normally come under the 'common sense' heading.

burnoutbabe · 24/02/2019 09:47

I have started it. Putting all similar stuff together is a good idea and then you can declutter it later. That helps fund stuff.
So if sorting clothes you should st least do all similar clothes together. I have a few tops that are more "going out" than everyday so in spare room wardrobe which means I forget them. And they are the nicest prettiest tops. So in fact spark joy. I should put them in main space and see them more often.

Idontmeanto · 24/02/2019 09:59

I’m trying to do a “thing” every weekend. I’ve so far done the medicine cupboard (box on kitchen windowsill,) ds wardrobe and drawers, and the kitchen drawer of doom. Dds have both got on board and done their rooms, too.

NorthEndGal · 24/02/2019 13:29

I'd normally never try this sort of thing, I have always been a 'clean one area at a time' sort of person.
We did the clothes yesterday, and got rid of three big bags.
It does make a difference, visually, getting the stuff all in one place, as we had clothes in four rooms Blush

I am telling myself this is going to help when I do move, as we will only be taking stuff we love.
It's just sooooo much to do

When we did the kids' toys, it was very overwhelming having everything from all over the house in one place, but it really brought the load of it all to everyone and once we got it into categories it started to feel better, and then each step after that - tossing the unrepairable stuff, separating what they liked from the rest, putting the wanted toys back, boxing up the donations and then getting them out of the house - it felt better and better until done.

I read a snippet from an online Q&A with her that if you find the whole category too overwhelming, to break it down even further. So instead of doing all clothes at once, doing all the skirts or T-shirts.

I've found a lot of the other decluttering/home improvement shows and sites tend to be a lot more rigid in what should be in what space and almost shaming people into giving things up compared to considering what you have in each category, and what you actually use and makes you happy. Maybe the latter is more common in her part of Japan or part of her Shinto background. I can recall growing up helping my grandmother do it the 'common sense' way of space by space and mostly just moving things around & how much guilt she had that I think she could have used advice to step out of the typical way of doing it and looking at it differently. It's obviously not for everyone, but it does seem Kondo gets a lot more cynicism and disregard compared to a lot of the other similar decluttering gurus out there.

NorthEndGal · 25/02/2019 19:21

Oh my sweet Jesus! I am literally (not figuratively) just finished the house.
The real estate agent arriving for our " what to expect " meeting in 40 minutes.

Just long enough for me to calm down and act like I normally have a tidy, organized house and like I don't care that I am about to be so on display to strangers

Gah, I hate this
