I miss being a Mum

Today I took 2 trains & walked 5 miles with 3 bags of shopping to see my 2 DS 18 & 20 who house share together.
I cooked us lunch (the 1st cooked meal one had had in 3 weeks 😂)
We didn’t have any garden chairs so we sat in the sun with lunch & wine out of Beano mugs on cushions.
I cleaned the washing machine & did 2 loads of washing
I batch cooked meals for the freezer
I cleaned the hob
I listened to them bickering about toilet paper
I listened to their plans for the evening- so carefree
They asked for washing/cooking advice
I got impromptu hugs
I got thank you

The best afternoon in many years
I miss being a mum

You still are a mum. And a bloody good one by the sounds of it!

bigchris · 23/02/2019 16:19

Do they drive?!
Couldn't you have stayed the night ??

Be careful doing too much for them, their future wives will be in here moaning about them Grin

RealityCheck909 · 23/02/2019 16:27

Neither drive.
I was always determined to send them to their respective future partners well equipped & I think I have.
It was just lovely to look after them for the afternoon.

Aw, OP.

I had an immediate knee-jerk "you shouldn't be doing all that!" response to your post. But that's just my jealousy talking! Mine are nearly-seven and nearly-one and I feel worn thin by doing all the cooking/cleaning/laundry/listening just now, but I hope I'll be as generous a mother as you when those tasks eventually become optional and occasional. Wolfiefan · 23/02/2019 19:15

You cleaned the washing machine and batch cooked?
Wow. Perhaps better to make sure they can actually cook for themselves. You really shouldn’t have to “look after” an 18 and 20 year old. What were they doing whilst you were doing all this? Hmm

RealityCheck909 · 24/02/2019 15:26

They actually did help but it’s not that. I know, we all know they should do stuff for themselves & they do. They both hold down jobs, they feed themselves (even if it is pot noddles) & they come up behind me without any prompting & cuddle me.
I loved doing everything for them yesterday & I miss it.
I’m the proudest mum ever ❤️

Ignore the haters OP.

I have 3 sons and they are capable but sometimes it's nice to look after them like they are a little again. Beneficial to everyone once in a while.

LloydColeandtheCoconuts · 24/02/2019 15:33

I'm with you Nell Grinit'll be another 17 years before my youngest is 18 yo! It sounds like you had a lovely day OP! And you still are a much needed and very much loved mum Smile

Arowana · 24/02/2019 15:34

Aw OP that is lovely Smile

dontknowwhattodo80 · 24/02/2019 15:34

Aww sounds like you had a lovely time @RealityCheck909 !

DramaAlpaca · 24/02/2019 15:38

What a sweet post, OP. I love being mum again to my eldest two, who've left home & share a place together, when I get the chance. It's lovely Smile

golddustwomen · 24/02/2019 15:38

I wish you were my mom Grin

No, seriously you sound like a lovely mom and your dds are lucky to have you x

surferjet · 24/02/2019 15:40

Lovely post. 😊

Whereareyouspot · 24/02/2019 15:40

Oh how lovely OP!
I don’t want mine to leave

yodelsay · 24/02/2019 15:40

What a lovely post. You are doing an amazing job and you'll always be their Mum!!
My DSs are at boarding school aged 14&15. I love looking after them when home. Not spoiling just treating them!!

Torvi · 24/02/2019 15:43

I think it's lovely that they house share.

ShabbyAbby · 24/02/2019 15:47

Well you're better at Mumming than me that's for sure
I don't do half that for my DCs if I can help it

Charles11 · 24/02/2019 15:53

You sound like a lovely mum and person!

I’m married with kids of my own and I still love it when my mum cooks for me and packs me dishes to take home whenever I visit.

lozengeoflove · 24/02/2019 15:57

How can anyone try to chide the OP for being a wonderful mum. We all need looking after from time to time and that’s exactly what she was doing.

My mum lives quite far away but when she comes to stay she does absolutely everything for us. As a mother of three DCs myself, I certainly plan to be as kind and wonderful as my mum to my children when they are adults.

puppymouse · 24/02/2019 16:09

I hope reading this there's scope for different types of amazing mums 😅

You sound lovely OP but it'll be a rainy day in hell before I could do all of that. DH might. If I lose him I think DD would be coming home to do all that for me. Blush

newlyfrugal · 24/02/2019 16:12

Lovely! Mums are the BEST! I no longer have my wonderful mum but she would definitely do this for us too. I can't wait to do it for mine either. Mine are only little and even through the exhaustion and providing the 787th snack of the day I know that in thduture I'll feel like and be delighted to have had that day you had ❤️

welpbloop · 24/02/2019 16:20

Ignore the not so nice comments.

Honestly. I read your post with a smile on my face. It sounds lovely! Truly lovely. I'm glad you had such a nice time with your boys. What a lovely Mum you sound!

Candidsugar · 24/02/2019 16:20

Ah lovely post OP, I’m glad you had a lovely afternoon Smile

RealityCheck909 · 24/02/2019 16:21

Thank you all.
My post was really about the joy of being a mum/dad. We all make mistakes bringing our children up but don’t dwell on it. At times I’ve felt like the worst parent in the world but hopefully we will all have that ‘moment ‘ where you just sit, leaning against a wall, sat on a cushion in the sun & just think - I love these human beings beyond anything I ever thought was possible. You open your eyes & look at them bickering & think - this is happiness
