This still gives me the creeps

I worked in a nursery for 10 years with 2/3 year olds. Every few years, the room would obviously be full of a completely different batch of kids but the children would talk every now and then about a child called Thomas in the room and in the garden. Sometimes they’d talk about his red hair and describe what he looked like when asked. They obviously had very limited vocabulary so they couldn’t have possibly managed to consistently teach this to new kids in the room every few months. The building we were in used to be an orphanage so they must have all been able to see someone us adults couldn’t.
Still creeps me out.

Share your stories of creepiness with me! I’d love to know

My cousin when in the garden saw the face of the previous owner peering out from the bedroom window , a lady who had died of cancer.
Several years later her own husband passed away with an aggressive form of cancer.
A week after his funeral, her son was diagnosed with cancer. He’s still having treatment.
I’m glad she’s moved out now.

Shookethtothecore · 28/02/2019 11:22

Very true, but how did she guess the nickname I have for the baby? It’s not a common name, not a name I would call him (if it’s a him)

SleightOfMind · 28/02/2019 11:28

We live near a churchyard and I often walk the dogs past or through it.
My old departed dog would always beer away from one particular spot. Absolutely refused to walk over that bit.

Never thought much of it as boy dog wasn’t bothered and, y’know, dogs are loons sometimes.

We now have two female dogs and neither of them would walk over that spot either. I’ve since spoken to other people with female dogs who won’t go near it.
Male dogs seem fine.

SleightOfMind · 28/02/2019 11:29

veer away!

SmashedMug · 28/02/2019 11:29

I'll be blunt, she didn't guess the name did she? That'll be one of those little embellishments people add to make a story sound more realistic. At some point, that name will have been mentioned to her or it's something that's been added in to the spooky story on retelling it. People change their own memories when they retell because they add little details each time.

Shookethtothecore · 28/02/2019 11:31

It is absolutely not an embellishment, she absolute said that nickname. It only happened recently! It’s possible she guessed absolutely, but it’s a hell of a random guess, but it is possible.
I assure you it isn’t embellished tho

Wow..the savernake forest story.
Wonder who the original poster was.

mintich · 28/02/2019 11:35

Why aren't people naming places? Are you scared to write them down?

SmashedMug · 28/02/2019 11:40

This thread is amusing me now. That forest one is EASILY explained. Animal is messing around near the chicken coop. Chickens not disturbed by it though. Animal runs off (the dark shape). Person assumes it's a puppy and goes wandering. Happens across local kids hanging out who decide to prank the person by making scary voices. Person is scared and runs home. Puppy is inside because it was never out. The end.

Our minds are very very good at scaring us when we are already spooked.

Me and my 14 year old daughter stayed outside of Bath in the bath spa hotel. It was a competition she’d won. We’d been given inter connecting rooms ...was fabulous.
At breakfast , before going out for the day with the film crew , she told me she’d woken up in the night and there was a woman dressed in old fashioned clothes holding a tea tray.
I instantly felt the hairs on my neck rise. My daughter was a very quiet, studious person not given to dramatics.

I said, omg what did you do. Oh, I just asked for the angels to come and remove her.
Thank god for that I thought.
Next night, all was fine.

Her little white cat at home, used to go to a corner of her bedroom and hiss and growl. We got a medium friend to come and have a look and she said it was the spirit of an old man. He’d heard her playing her keyboard and just stayed to listen.
So, she got him to move on and the cat was fine after that.
The same friend looked out of our patio windows towards the old house , whose grounds we are built in, I don’t like the feeling from that house she said.

My first husband was friendly with the guy who owned it. It was now an architects office and he stayed in the garden flat a couple of times a week as he lived outside of our area. You know where there is going don’t you?
Yep, he’d have lights mysteriously turn on in the middle of night. Hear footsteps on the stairs.
I’ve lived here 43 years and thankfully seen or heard nothing.
Yet regularly my daughter or first husband would come into the bedroom if I was having a lie down and say ‘ yes? ‘ what did you want.

I’d never called them...but they’d heard something calling their name.
Weird. Just weird.

“It’s possible she guessed absolutely, but it’s a hell of a random guess,”

What made you choose the nickname?

MadameDD · 28/02/2019 12:01

Judashascomeintosomemoney - yes it is Conquest House - immediately I saw the building I recognised it.

I'm sure it's lovely to visit for the art etc but I'm not in a hurry to rush back there!

Littledidsheknow · 28/02/2019 12:22

It’s possible she guessed absolutely, but it’s a hell of a random guess

It certainly would be. But it's more likely that you mentioned in the past to her that you liked that name.

CaMePlaitPas · 28/02/2019 12:23

@Whywonttheyletmeusemyusername

Is it Enfield by any chance?

BlueGoon · 28/02/2019 12:41

Does anyone remember the woo thread a few years ago where the OP was working in an old building and strange things were happening in the attic? I think banging and maybe something to do with a cross or scratches on the walls?

I think the builders said the previous staff refused to work there and moved out.

It was probably a hoax but I think the OP said other (local) poster's actually went to meet her and check things out. My memory is hazy though it was so long ago.

WillGymForPizza · 28/02/2019 12:59

Ive posted this on here before. I saw my grandmother on the morning she died. She died at about 6am, and a few hours later I was sat on my own in my parents living room and felt a sort of static like feeling, looked up at very briefly saw her looking at me through the window. Then she was gone. She looked like she did when I was a child and she'd pop in on her way to the shops, so about 25 years younger.

I also saw my parents previous dog who they'd had to have put down very suddenly. It was a horrible time for all, and a few months down the line they decided to get a new puppy. One night they went out and asked me to sit him as they hadn't had him long. He was very naughty running around, pawing me and chewing everything in sight and I had to watch him like a hawk. I looked up and once again very briefly saw their old dog sat in the doorway. Much more recently I saw him walk across their kitchen.

HankNPat · 28/02/2019 13:11

BlueGoon, I think that was the thread (or two?) where the OP had offices in an old converted mill building, but the top floor - where most of the woo stuff was happening - was still unoccupied. I kept up with it for a while, but didn't last the distance!

Flickadoo · 28/02/2019 13:18

I want to know more about the dead jaundiced daughter in the garden and the teacher walking lay toys that weren’t there - someone mentioned them a page or two back and I’m curious now.

Our DD is a result of a stay at the Bath Spa Hotel - bit of a miraculous conception, so maybe there was something else involved! Grin

HankNPat · 28/02/2019 13:28

Flick, IIRC the 'dead jaundiced daughter' story revolved around the poster's NDN's DD being in hospital extremely unwell. One day the poster saw the DD in her NDN's garden looking as though she had make up on, so she assumed she'd recovered. She hadn't, she'd died, severely jaundiced.

Teacher and tidy toys. She'd walked into an empty classroom at the end of the day after most people had gone home. Turned round to tidy the toys and found them all in an unfeasibly neat pile - nobody else there.

HankNPat · 28/02/2019 13:30

Have a look in The Unexplained www.mumsnet.com/Talk/the_unexplained. The longer threads contain some of these stories!

Dowser · 28/02/2019 13:41

Congratulations aj

VeryFoolishFay · 28/02/2019 13:51

when the lady said she could see a girl watching from the window, wouldn't you automatically look to the window? I know I would. If nothing else, I'd be wondering if DD had bunked off school! So did you decide not to look in order not to indulge her, as it were?

I did look but we were a long way down the garden and it would have been difficult to see a live person in the kitchen, let alone a ghost!
