What colour should I go for? Massive plea for help.....

I am an interior design Fuckwit. Useless with colours, textures etc etc.

Finally (after 7 years of faffing living here) I have bought some new bedroom furniture and I love it. I now need to replace the old spare-room curtains, which don't even fit, are totally the wrong colour and having been hanging badly at the window all this time.

Also probably need few cushions, maybe a rug?

And then I stop. No fucking idea. I cannot even work out what colour would look good. I dream of greys and duck egg and teal - but with the wooden floors and furniture even I know (with my fuckwittery) that it will not go.

So oh wise MNetters - what colour should I do? Any curtain fabric/rug/accessories suggestions very gratefully received......

Navy

I love navy in bedrooms

Nesssie · 22/02/2019 14:26

I think you need curtains, cushion, rug and a photo on the wall all the same colour. Will tie the room together nicely.
Grey is a safe bet, but yellow could be really nice to brighten it up?

I’m rubbish at it too, but I would get matching bedside lamps first.
I’m thinking glass base and a white lampshade.
Your window is beautiful, so much light!
I think maybe pale olive-green would work with the colour of your furniture. A bit like the background colour of the OPs on MN. You know what colour I mean?
Can you get rid of the white side you have in the room? Doesn’t work with the rest of furniture, I don’t think.

We have in our living room these curtains from Dunelm, and we also have light oak furniture in our living room from OFL. I love it. We have a pale turquoise sofa and a mid-grey carpet, and cream walls.

Interesting. I hadn't thought of navy. I did think that the orange/warm colours from the wood meant cool colours -so blues -would be out.

Wood is a neutral, it will go with most things

I'm actual fact I think that wood doesn't look as great with warmer tones.

If it were me I would go all white/cream, layered different blankets and cushions all white but different styles and textures.

I also don't like the curtains; they need to be floor length. If that's not possible because of radiator I would replace with blinds.

Have a look on houzz - loads of ideas from the photos on there. Or just google ‘curved bay window’ and get some ideas from the pictures it brings up.

Belindabelle · 22/02/2019 16:12

Well that is a lovely room. That window and the light! Amazing.

I love navy but because of the south facing aspect I feel it would be a shame to lose the light.

I would start with the window. For practical reasons I would get lined curtains slightly longer than what is there at the moment. However I would dress the window with full length curtains on each side. The short curtains will hide behind these during the day. The long curtains will not be closed so do not need to be full width.

You need a large rug to break up the area and provide a contrast between the floor and the furniture. The floor is lovely but I think you should have gone for furniture that was lighter or darker.

As for actual colours well with a south facing room the world is your oyster. If you like teal I would go for that as an accent with a more subtle off white or light grey.

Don't forget lighting. A statement central light would look good. also thing about having an arm chair with a standard lamp over by the window.

I had thought neutrals/creams/lots of textures. But wondered if that was playing it too safe

Playing on navy, would nautical work? Depends if you like that style.

Be careful not to go too bathroomy though.

Waffles80 · 22/02/2019 20:45

Farrow and Ball blackened is a lovely grey/blue colour. Calm and cool. Would look great on the walls there.

Nautical sounds a bit naff to me. I’d go for a dark navy velvet curtain, a darkish rug/a rug with navy and teal. Then some dark cushions / patterned perhaps?

Waffles80 · 22/02/2019 20:47

Here’s a room in blackened. It looks great in bright light. I like the image below but some darker accents would be lovely.

I like the paint colour - but to be honest I wasn't thinking of changing the walls - just adding soft furnishing.

And pictures/lighting/proper bedside lamps. Arghh. I hate stuff like this.

Affiliate link eh OP? Wink

ohdearmymistake · 23/02/2019 16:40

I would have some colour on the walls then soft furnishings in an accent colour, it looks rather bland at the moment.

rainbowstardrops · 23/02/2019 17:05

I love that first picture from Waffles80.
I definitely think it needs some colour and that wall has subtle colour. You only need to do one 'feature' wall.
Bloody gorgeous room by the way

TSSDNCOP · 23/02/2019 18:16

Can I suggest duck egg too? Pretty and soft in an already well lit room.

Also can I urge that you go for longer length curtains? At least to mid radiator, but preferably floor length. I think shortie curtains in a bay look silly and out of proportion.
