Speed camera flashed - but I wasn't speeding!

Last night I was driving on the Bodmin A30 duel carriageway, national speed limit road (70 - yes??) And I had my cruise control set to 68.
I went passed a speed camera and it flashed, pretty sure I was the only one on the road.

Has this happened to anyone else ? Any ideas what it could be? Anyone know the road?

Single or dual carriageway? Speed limit on single is 60 and on dual is. 70, but there also can be local variations. Sat navs are not always accurate for speed limits.

Drogosnextwife · 18/02/2019 12:49

Was it a single or dual carriageway?

KittyLane1 · 18/02/2019 12:50

As I said in the OP, duel carriageway

The cruise control on my car is about 3 mph less than the actual speed. Was it a drop down to 60?

SerialChangerOfName · 18/02/2019 12:50

Some dual carriage ways have lower limits of 60, 50, or even 40 set, and frequently displayed. Could this be the case and you missed it?

Villanellesproudmum · 18/02/2019 12:51

There is a dual carriageway near me which drops to 60, no road signs to indicate this other than the distance in lamp posts.

KittyLane1 · 18/02/2019 12:51

I guess, but the signs clearly stated national speed limit, no other signs around, no road works, no signs covered up to indicate a change in speed
Properly confused

This says there are 3 speed cameras on the Bodmin section of the A30, 2 with a 70 limit, one with a 60. Do you know which one it was?

And are you sure it flashed? Sometimes they appear to flash, but are actually just reflections off passing headlamps etc.

But if it was the 60 limit one, the only thing you can do is wait a couple of weeks to see if a ticket comes through. Also, if your cruise control was set at 68, that means that you were probably doing 63/64 MPH, so even if the camera went off, you might not receive a fine.

Drogosnextwife · 18/02/2019 12:53

Have you driven this road before?

ladyvimes · 18/02/2019 12:53

Its only 70 on a dual carriageway if it has a barrier along the central reservation. If it’s just a verge or line then the limit is 60 so you were probably speeding.

Knittedfairies · 18/02/2019 12:54

Any road works?

BarbaraofSevillle · 18/02/2019 12:54

Are you sure? Lamp posts with no speed signs would indicate a 30 mph limit. There has to be repeaters if the speed limit is anything different.

EffYouSeeKaye · 18/02/2019 12:55

So the national speed limit sign (white circle with a black diagonal line) means 60 mph on a dual carriageway way with no central reservation barrier and 70 mph on a dual carriageway where a central barrier is present.

Not a lot of people know that 🤓

hippoherostandinghere · 18/02/2019 12:56

The speed limit on a dual carriageway is only 70 if it has a central reservation like on a motorway. Otherwise it's 60.

EffYouSeeKaye · 18/02/2019 12:57

Apart from ladyvimes 😂

Villanellesproudmum · 18/02/2019 12:58

A dual carriageway can drop to 60 when the lamp posts decrease in distance, usually accompanied by side roads, hence drop in speed. A road near me brings in a huge amount on income, including from two of my friends who wasn’t aware of it. I drive on it a lot and locals tend to brake and slow through the camera at 60 than speed up again to 70, defeats the purpose of the camera.

BarbaraofSevillle · 18/02/2019 12:59

Seriously? I would be utterly appalled by anyone with a driving licence who does not know that.

Villanellesproudmum · 18/02/2019 12:59

Plus the central reservation indicator as other have mentioned.

Disfordarkchocolate · 18/02/2019 13:03

I drove home with a friend last week who was completely oblivious to the fact that some duel carriageways can have a lower speed limit than 70mph. This explains why they have done 3 speed awareness courses.

BlueFox101 · 18/02/2019 13:04

I've been flashed before doing 28 in a 30 zone and never received a ticket for it. Not sure if sometimes they randomly go off? Confused

Well there’s a few just on this very short thread Barbara (always liked your username, btw). It is a worry!

ConstantStruggler · 18/02/2019 13:07

By definition, a road is only a dual carriageway if it has a central reservation.

Disfordarkchocolate · 18/02/2019 13:09

But the speed limit is only 70 is the central reservation has a barrier.

KittyLane1 · 18/02/2019 13:10

Never driven the road before, all websites seem to indicate it's a 70, the road then changed to single carriageway, so 60 yes?

I can't remeber if there was a central reservation or not, I drove on the road for almost 70 miles, and people were driving much quicker than me.

OP posts:
ConstantStruggler · 18/02/2019 13:11

And a road lacking a central reservation is a single carriageway regardless off the number of lanes.
