how can I have reached the grand old age of 40 something and still be unable to wash up. I have very hot water + fairy liquid + green scourer. wash everything with plenty of scrubbing on the drity bits. leave on draining board to dry. I come back later to put it away and it is GREASY.

What am I doing wrong? serious and not-so-serious answers please

Wrong order? Are you doing glasses etc first and really dirty stuff last? I always find it greasy when my husband does it because he won’t listen to me about the right order.

WitchDancer · 17/02/2019 21:33

Do you rinse?

BadlyAgedMemes · 17/02/2019 21:35

You're not rinsing?

RandomMess · 17/02/2019 21:35

That's just weird how can you have something greasy every time Confused

Polestar50 · 17/02/2019 21:35

Need to know a few things first.
Do you use a washing up bowl or wash directly in the sink?
Do you put everything in the sink at once and wash up or do it one item at a time? Do you categorise the washing up or do it in any old order?
What order do you do things in?
Do you rinse in hot water too or put in draining board straight from the sink?

GrowThroughWhatYouGoThrough · 17/02/2019 21:37

You need to rinse

SpoonBlender · 17/02/2019 21:39

Green scourer? Use a sponge with a white scourer back, reserve the green for stubborn stuff - the green is abrasive and will trash any non-stick. The sponge will lift grease, which a straight green won't so well.

Rinse before draining.

RandomMess · 17/02/2019 21:40

Get a dishwasher Wink

wowfudge · 17/02/2019 21:42

Water not hot enough. Wear rubber gloves and you can get it really hot. And yes, you need to do it in the right order. Too much washing up liquid used can make things feel greasy once they're dry.

Danuka · 17/02/2019 21:46

Is the sink/bowl clean?
Glasses, cutlery, plastics then plates. Pots and pans always last.
Always rinse.

ScorpiaForCatra · 17/02/2019 21:52

Boil kettle and pour some hit water and drop of washing liquid in frying pan. The
Scrape and rinse pots, stack in the order of:
Glass ware
Small plates
Dinner plates
Cutlery
Mugs
Bowls
Baking trays
Frying pans

Be sure not to stack anything that has had oil in on top of things that haven't.

That's my routine and it work for me. Grin

Notso · 17/02/2019 22:03

Rinse before, rinse afterwards, proper order, and a dishmatic.

TrashPanda · 17/02/2019 22:09

DP manages to make stuff greasy when he washes up too, especially the back of plastic plates and bowls. I use a yellow and green scourer sponge and fairy liquid straight in the sink. Glasses and plastic drink bottles first then plastic plates and bowls, then mugs, china plates and bowls then cutlery then pans and trays. Don't fill the sink to start with, just half way. Always rinse under hot water.

parietal · 17/02/2019 22:34

i use a washing up bowl (clean). I put things in one at a time, wash well & dunk in the same water a few times to rinse. I don't rinse in a separate bowl or under the tap cos I don't want to waste water.

The water is very hot (I can barely put my hands in).

i'm only doing pots & pans & big things by hand. plates etc go in the dishwasher. I try to leave the worst things to last.

it isn't always coming out greasy, but much more often than it should. I seem to have to put on masses of fairy liquid to cut through the grease. I wondered if the formula for washing up liquid has changed from when I was younger?

You need to rinse separately and also change the water regularly

pinkboa · 17/02/2019 22:44

Rinse.... your just taking presumably clean plates etc. Dunking them in greasy dirty dish water and sticking them on the draining board.

Doesn't matter how hot the water is...

Notso · 17/02/2019 22:55

Agree with pp, your rinsing with dirty, greasy water.
I use a wet dishmatic for washing and then a quick rinse in clean water. I don't fill the sink or bowl. I am mindful of wasting water but seeing as there's only every a few items I hand wash, the rest goes in the dishwasher I don't think I use more than a sink full for rinsing anyway.

SpoonBlender · 17/02/2019 22:59

You've got a dishwasher? Why are you handwashing (apart from cast iron)?

You're not rinsing in clean water to save water - but the dishwasher uses much less than you would anyway.

Use the dishwasher!

user1483390742 · 17/02/2019 23:13

Use your dishwasher! Do 2 loads! One after dinner, unload and reload before bed and press start! Simple!

TwoShades1 · 18/02/2019 01:17

Wash in the sink under running water. Using very hot water. Add dishwashing liquid to eat item individually, wash with sponge, rinse with hot water then into the drying rack.

SpringForEver · 18/02/2019 01:20

I wipe oil off first with some kitchen roll, if there is a lot and I can't re-use it I pour it in the bin on top of the absorbent rubbish and then wipe the pan. Fill with very hot water and detergent, swish it round and tip it out a couple of times, then wash it. I don't immerse it.

Other stuff goes in the dishwasher, minus the oil because since phosphates were banned the filter acquires a lot of nasty goo which is made worse by oily stuff.

VanillaSauce · 18/02/2019 07:42

Use the dishwasher

INeedNewShoes · 18/02/2019 07:49

I only 1/2 fill the bowl with water/fairy but don't drop the pans in until I've given them a little scrub with a bit of the water (just what the sponge soaks up) then I rinse that first lot of grub straight down the sink, then they go into the bowl for a dip and a wash but basically any food/grease has already been washed off before they go in the bowl. Then they have a swish around and a little rinse (with the rinse water going into the bowl).

Doing it this way the water in the bowl is still fairly clean at the end of the whole lot and I'm fairly sure I'm not using more than one full bowl worth of water.

The other thing is that the scratchy side of the sponge is great for stubborn bits but you need to wipe with something smooth (sponge or dishcloth) for the grease.

INeedNewShoes · 18/02/2019 07:52

To pp saying just stick the lot in the dishwasher, I didn't think baking trays and non stick frying pans were dishwasher proof?

I've deliberately bought all stainless steel pans and a glass oven tray so that they can go in the dishwasher as I didn't think other materials could go in the dishwasher.

Hazlenutpie · 18/02/2019 07:54

I love my dishwasher ❤️
