how can I have reached the grand old age of 40 something and still be unable to wash up. I have very hot water + fairy liquid + green scourer. wash everything with plenty of scrubbing on the drity bits. leave on draining board to dry. I come back later to put it away and it is GREASY.

What am I doing wrong? serious and not-so-serious answers please

FGS, you're not rinsing it if you're just dipping it in the same soapy/greasy water.

I wash non stick items in the dishwasher and they're fine.

Use your dishwasher or wash and rinse under hot running water.

Imagine how "clean" you would be and how your hair would look if you washed yourself via the same method - dunking in bathwater that has been used by several people before you Grin

Btw, soap doesn't destroy grease. It just separates it into smaller particles thereby allowing it to "mix" with water. If you don't rinse it, you just get diluted grease that will stick back to plates once they dry.
