Can vitamin D pills make you happy?

Just that really! I’d been feeling down and depressed, lethargic and lacking the oomph to do anything. My —doctor— mother suggested vitamin d pills. So I got some off ebay, “super strength”.

Been taking them a week, and now feel so much more energetic and ready to get off my arse and do something Grin

Is it the vit d? Or is it the placebo!

I had a vitamin D deficiency confirmed by blood test and after starting high strength pills I felt a million times better but it took about a month to really kick in.

I had more energy and as a result felt more cheerful certainly.

I love vitamin D! This is the first winter I've felt great x

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 17/02/2019 11:08

I was put on high dosage Vit D by my GP and a lot of mental and physical niggles and pains I had put down to ageing went away.

KatyMac · 17/02/2019 11:10

It'll will be a combination but over time it will have a significant positive effect

But to be honest, taking proactive action (starting a supplement) makes you feel better in itself

Clawdy · 17/02/2019 11:13

I started taking them after a series of awful coughs and colds. Two years later, I've had virtually no colds and coughs, and seem to have avoided viruses other family members have succumbed to. Maybe just luck, but I would certainly recommend them.

TheCunkOfPhilomena · 17/02/2019 11:14

I am a huge convert to Vic D supplements. I went to the GP last April as I was just so exhausted and my blood test results showed I was severely low so was started on a very high dose and within 2 weeks I felt a change and then within a month I felt great. I have to take it forever now but it's well worth it!

Applesaregreenandred · 17/02/2019 11:15

Interesting- thanks for the idea

MrsJayy · 17/02/2019 11:16

I have chronic fatigue and i certainly feel perkier on Vit D i started it 2 winters ago and i feel like i survived the gloomy winter fine.

Eminybob · 17/02/2019 11:34

This is interesting. Both my baby DS and I were diagnosed with vit D deficiency recently and have been prescribed supplements.
I’ve only taken 2 tablets so far (they are one per week) and I don’t feel any different. I wasn’t expecting to until reading this thread so now I’m waiting for my surge in energy and happiness!

DragonMamma · 17/02/2019 11:37

I use a high strength spray and it works wonders! Office job and between that and long hours, I don’t see much daylight in the winter

MrsJayy · 17/02/2019 11:37

It takes about 6 weeks to kick in I take over the counter ones your sounds a mega dose hopefully you and baby are better soon.

EvaHarknessRose · 17/02/2019 11:45

I think d3 helps my dd to be happier.

Eminybob · 17/02/2019 12:01

Thanks MrsJayy

I definitely suffer from a winter slump in my mood. In fact this year it was so acute that the GP wanted to prescribe anti-depressants.

But I have found other methods help more. Yes to the high strength vit D. I get mine very cheaply from Home Bargains. A light box has also helped me enormously, I sit in front of it for 20 minutes on dull days and it really recharges the batteries. Forcing myself out for a walk on bright mornings really helps too, 30 minutes in the fresh air and light helps a lot.

For me, the worst of it has passed. I see the evidence every day that we are getting more and more daylight and winter is almost over. The worst for me is the gradual slide into darkness from the clocks going back at the end of October to the solstice on 21st December. It's a very difficult time of year for me and I hate it. Taking the vit D, using the light box and getting out when it is light helps.

As does mentally sticking voodoo pins into anyone who mentions "hygge", "snuggling on the sofa" or "hot choccie".

KatyMac · 17/02/2019 12:07

It has taken over 2 years with an average of 7500 units a day to get me from 26 to about 115 (ish - I can't remember)

26 is pretty low and 115 is just about OK using @Bettertobehealthy's helpful info

BuffaloCauliflower · 17/02/2019 12:18

Many many Brits suffer with vitamin D deficiencies, even mild ones, thanks to not getting enough sunlight through winter. A vitamin D supplement is a very good idea.

TheCunkOfPhilomena · 17/02/2019 12:28

@KatyMac what does @Bettertobehealthy say about levels? I haven't had mine tested again, my blood test had me at 12 which was very low according to my GP (he was thinking about referring me to an endocrinologist) but the VitD made me feel better so I didn't think about having them tested again, should I? I was on a 3 month mega dose but now just take OTC ones of 2,000mg.

GinaCarbonara · 17/02/2019 12:48

Mine was 11 when I was tested. No wonder I felt horrid. I'm taking 8000mcg a day

KatyMac · 17/02/2019 12:49

I can't remember sorry - I'm hoping the @ might bring her here....but I'm sure she said I wasn't even nearly high at just over the 100....I know below 50 is low

I take the Dlux 3000 and for 2 yrs I was 3 one day 2 the next but I have dropped to 2 one day and 1 the next as my levels are up

SuperDuperJezebel · 17/02/2019 12:58

This is giving me hope! I'm on a loading dose ATM, I think today is day 5 of 40,000ui a day. I think I am starting to feel better although it's hard to tell with a hangover! I hadn't even considered low vitamin D until I got the results but once I read about it, I realised it probably explained a lot about how I was feeling.

whymewhyme · 17/02/2019 12:58

It will definitely be the vit D I started taking it a few months ago along with vit b6 and b12! Amazing combo!!

Hellohellohowareyou · 17/02/2019 13:41

Very interesting thread thanks OP.

I’m certainly in need of a boost, are the OTC ones any good? If so how many mg would people recommend?

MiniMum97 · 17/02/2019 13:46

Since I started taking vitamin d supplements my annual Seasonal Affective Depression went away.
