I was doing that dialect quiz and selected Granny which apparently is nearly unique to Scotland and (mainly Northern) Ireland.

I'm from the south west.

What do you call your parent's mother and roughly where are you from?

I forgot to say I'm a Londoner, So Gran, Granny and Grandma are quiite normal here. When I was tiny I said, "Gandan" and "Gan Gan". I've also heard "Ganna" which I think is sweet from tiny kids.

Hushabyelullaby · 16/02/2019 22:35

Forgot to say we moved from London to Cheshire area hence why my mum wanted to be called Nana. Stepdad's wife is from NW where most are called Nana.

DH's parents are originally midlands but his mum decided on Granny because his stepdad (Lancastrian), wanted to be called Grandpa and she thought nothing else sounded right with it.

80sMum · 16/02/2019 22:36

Nanny/Nan & Grandad - I am actually surprised how uncommon this seems as I've always just assumed that's what most people call their grandparents!

ErrolTheDragon · 17/02/2019 01:42

I called my mother's mother 'granny' or 'grandma'. DD called my mother and MIL granny. My mothers family is lancs, MIL was Somerset originally, then Gloucester.

I grew up in Essex, my friends mostly had Nans. I think DH had a 'nanny' who came from London.
