Anyone know this children's book?

I remember reading (and loving) a book when I was a child but I've never been able to find it all these years later.

All I remember is there were two children, possibly a brother and sister, who ventured through a wood, a hedge or maybe a fence and ended up in a strange place. One of the characters (or maybe a dog) ended up with a thorn from a bush in their foot and it was making them ill. There was possibly a witch type figure that they had to keep away from and there was possibly magical elements but I'm not entirely sure.

I realise that's absolutely nothing to go on really but does anyone have any ideas what it could be? I think I would have been reading it around 1995-1998ish if that helps anyone out timings wise.

Was it The Tunnel by Anthony Browne?

beansonbread · 15/02/2019 21:38

Not The Tunnel - it was published in 2008 so not far enough back. Thanks for the idea though.

Yes. But I can't remember the title - if it's the same book there is a vivid description of the pain and the paw? Definitely magical element. I think maybe one of the kids had a power ...

I remember reading about much the thorn hurt and they had to race to save whoever/whatever was hurt.

I think the cover had lots of branches and leaves on but that's an even vaguer memory than the story.

Could it be Knock three times? Don't remember the Thorne part but that had a brother/sister going to a strange land

Tweenhelpplease · 15/02/2019 21:58

I remember something similar but it was quite a nature magical theme to it, Im pretty sure the boy and girl were connected in some way to the earth, trees etc and their clothes, possibly hair were all quite organic/earthly looking...

I can’t say for certain but think the boys name was Timothy?

pepperjack · 15/02/2019 21:58

Could it be Badjelly the witch?

Letthemysterybe · 15/02/2019 21:59

Oo the thorn in the paw is really ringing a bell

pepperjack · 15/02/2019 21:59

Tim and Rose, they had a cow called Lucy

beansonbread · 15/02/2019 22:03

It's not Knock Three Times or Badjelly the Witch. Thanks for the ideas.

I've googled every combination of the key words I remember and come up with nothing. I'm know pouring over Wikipedia's lists of children's books published in each year.

Any of the Elizabeth Beresford “Magic” books sound familiar? (Travelling Magic, Vanishing Magic, Dangerous Magic etc etc) - i can’t remember which is which but they often had brother/sisters finding themselves in suddenly magical situations going into gardens etc. I LOVED them Grin

beansonbread · 15/02/2019 22:14

I found one tiny snippet from Awkward Magic and it rings a very small bell - I'm not convinced it's the right though. I can't find a plot line or summary of the story so I can't be sure.

The Silver Chair by CS Lewis? There were two children and a thorn in Aslan’s paw.

Flightywoman · 15/02/2019 22:18

If you don't get a solution you could try Stump The Bookseller by Loganberry books.

It's AMAZING!!

beansonbread · 15/02/2019 22:18

Not The Silver Chair but I do think that's where I'm getting the confusion over if it was a boy or a dog (or possibly even a wolf) that gets a thorn in their foot/paw from.

Monkey has it. It's The Silver Chair

bookworm14 · 15/02/2019 22:18

The Hounds of the Morrigan by Pat O’Shea?

beansonbread · 15/02/2019 22:23

Not The Hounds of Morrigan.

Thanks for the tip on Stump the Bookseller. I may have to resort to that if I don't find it soon. This has driven me mad for years!

I thought of The silver chair but...
The thorn in Aslan's paw is when Jill drives it in to produce a drop of blood at the end of the book which takes Prince (now King) Caspian back to youth.

beansonbread · 15/02/2019 22:36

The thorn is definitely an accident as they go through the woods, a hedge or something similar and it becomes a race against time to save them as it's making the person/dog/wolf more and more ill as time goes on....I think!

Under the Hawthorn Tree?

minniemoll · 15/02/2019 22:46

Could it be Astercote by Penelope Lively?

beansonbread · 15/02/2019 22:50

Neither of those two I'm afraid.

I've now gone through lists on Wikipedia of children's books published year by year from 1999 back to 1970 and can't find it. Now I don't think these lists are showing every book published but I'm beginning to think I've imagined this one!
