Best exercise for good legs?

losenotloose · 13/02/2019 09:37

As in firm and muscular as opposed to mine which are wobbly! I've been doing power pump and spin classes since for the last 6 weeks but is there anything else I should be doing?

Thanks

Walking. Walk as much as you can. So rather than driving to the shop, walk. Or if you catch a bus then get off a few stops early and walk the rest of the way. Try to use stairs instead of lifts and escalators.

There are loads of apps and gadgets you can get to count your steps - try and increase your daily steps by an extra 500 every week. So week 1 say you walk 6000 steps a day on average, build it up 6500 every day the next week until you reach around 15000 a day

Tulip walking doesn't seem to do it for me! I'm a non-driver so walk alot already and my job isn't a sitting down one a lot of the time. Maybe my legs just aren't capable of being toned?!

Swimming might help though takes time to build up.

VanillaSauce · 13/02/2019 10:34

Cycling especially uphill.

Felicia4 · 13/02/2019 10:38

Squats. Start off with no weights. If doing at home add hand held weights as you progress. If you go to a gym use a bar and add weights. Also good for the bum so win winSmile

DeathBySnuSnu · 13/02/2019 10:39

No, seriously- walking. And six weeks isn't enough to build muscle so don't fret yet.x

losenotloose · 13/02/2019 10:49

I hate swimming so as much as it would probably be effective I know I won't do it. Well spin is like cycling so hopefully I'm on the right track.

Felicia I do lots of squats in my power pump class! Death seriously, I can't see walking having a major effect. I spent a year and a half walking for at least an hour a day, including a massive steep hill (me and dc nicknamed it the hill of doom 😁) as I don't drive and there was no bus and I could see no difference. How much walking are you talking about??

OP posts:
losenotloose · 13/02/2019 10:54

Death it's reassuring to hear that six weeks is not long enough. I don't want to feel like I'm wasting my time.

Any kind of exercise is good. Cycling or running are probably best though.

Are you overweight? If so, your legs are probably toned but there is a layer of fat on top giving the jiggle effect. Keep at the exercise & you’ll lose it soon enough.

VanillaSauce · 13/02/2019 18:16

How is any exercise a waste of time?

NicoAndTheNiners · 13/02/2019 18:18

I'd agree that six weeks isn't long enough to see a benefit?

How often do you do pump? I reckon you need to do it 3x a week to be ale to steadily improve (ie keep increasing your weights). As you know pump is low weights and high reps so mix it up with some actual free weights work with heavier weights and lower reps, squats, lunges.

FlyingMonkeys · 13/02/2019 18:21

Incline sets on the treadmill, and cycling - bike riding outdoors is best as spin doesn't replicate in quite the same way.

bialystockandbloom · 13/02/2019 18:23

Squats, deadlifts, leg extensions, hip thrusts - but all have to be done at a gym to use bars/weights. At home with no equipment, body weight squats and running probably, but you'd have to do a lot to see a big or quick difference. I also think you have to do a lot of classes to see a significant difference - ie 4/5x per week. Can you use the main gym where you do your classes, to use the other equipment?

Unescorted · 13/02/2019 18:25

Cycling, running (on uneven ground also gets your core firmed up too) and diet.

EllieMentry · 13/02/2019 18:27

Barre classes are excellent for legs.

PenguinPandas · 13/02/2019 18:37

I know you don't want to do swimming but when I did that - would imagine other exercise is a similar timescale - I started feeling fitter after 2 months and noticed legs etc firmer after around 6 months plus so would give it more time. I think the best exercise is one you enjoy and are happy to commit too - wouldn't worry too much about which one though I also found walking didn't do much. I went swimming 3 times a week, gradually increasing number of lengths, and was size 8 to 10 then. Now more like a 12, sigh but have bought a water rower for at home.

If you have excess weight it hides the muscle so you have to lose the weight too to get a toned appearance but exercise definitely helps.

losenotloose · 13/02/2019 18:54

I'm not overweight although would be happy to lose half a stone or so. I've been doing spin twice a week and body pump 2-3 times a week. I've also started adding in a bit of running. 6k today!

Sadly I can't confidently cycle so that's not an option.

I know no exercise is a waste of time but the truth is this new fitness regime is more about vanity than health!

Air brush them. Like a spray on 6 pack. Or maybe its called contouring.

I need it whatever its called.

I walk about 10 hours a day btw.

losenotloose · 13/02/2019 19:04

I'm a bit intimidated by the gym. I'd love to invest in a personal trainer but can't afford it.

breaker · 13/02/2019 19:05

Weighted squats every day. Best way.

Nandocushion · 13/02/2019 19:08

Running!

HellonHeels · 13/02/2019 19:10

A dynamic style of yoga - astanga, vinyasa, power yoga - will tone everything but you'll need a few months for it to show.

Jimjamjooney · 13/02/2019 19:12

Another one vouching for squats, deadlifts, lunges hip thrusts etc. (The heavier the better!) Most gyms will have personal trainers/ staff you can ask for form tips and I promise you no-one cares about what you're doing

SimoneStrasser · 13/02/2019 19:45

I swear by power walking.

I’m a crap jogger but can walk energetically for miles and miles.

My legs are in great shape and well toned if I say so myselfSmile
