Is it acceptable to sing along at the theatre?

Quick poll: as the title says.

Yes, no or it depends on the show.

I'm watching the Jersey Boys and the woman next to me is singing rather enthusiastically with every song.

I want her to shut up.

Back later. Second half starting Grin

Id say yes & no, yeah if most people were singing but i agree would be annoying.

SnuggyBuggy · 12/02/2019 20:54

Unless it's a sing along I'd find it really annoying

TildaTurnip · 12/02/2019 20:55

Singalong showing-yes

Anything else-no!

BarryTheKestrel · 12/02/2019 20:55

Depends on the show and not loudly!

Went to see Rock of Ages a few years ago and everyone was singing along but not at the top of their voices etc. Seems to be the done thing if it has very well known songs to sing along a little but not OTT.

AlpacaPicnic · 12/02/2019 20:56

Singing along is fun but under the breath is more acceptable unless it's a singalong performance. If I've paid to see a performance then I want to enjoy the professional not Karen on Karaoke night...

KittensAndCake · 12/02/2019 20:56

No way, tell her to shut up

Paddington68 · 12/02/2019 20:57

No.

Foslady · 12/02/2019 20:57

Not at all - people have been kicked out for it

RegIsDead · 12/02/2019 20:57

She's not quiet. She's just come back to her seat and I'm hoping she's a mumsnetter

Noooooooo!!! Not acceptable at all...you've not paid all that money to hear her sing. I'm surprised the stewards haven't stopped her though, I'd have been right in there!

BrusselPout · 12/02/2019 20:59

No, fucking annoying - I haven't paid a lot of money to hear crappy singing from the audience

ethelredonagoodday · 12/02/2019 21:00

Unless it's a singalong version, absolutely not.

anniehm · 12/02/2019 21:02

Unless it's a sing along strictly speaking no, but with juke box musicals all bets are off - it's whole premise is that you know the songs. I've seen three of them and will never see a forth, I want to hear the professionals

RegIsDead · 12/02/2019 21:03

I complained. I'm in the circle now. Yay!

trockodile · 12/02/2019 21:04

Only during the encore imo!

Processedpea · 12/02/2019 21:04

No

AnneLovesGilbert · 12/02/2019 21:06

Good work OP!

Les Mis was nearly ruined for me by the horrendous woman sitting next to me sighing, crying and singing (off key) through the entire thing. I was painfully pathetic British and kept glowering at her but she didn’t give a crap and carried on being “totally swept away by his totally AMAZING” it all was. I did elbow her at one point but then pretended it was an accident.

Chosennone · 12/02/2019 21:07

Rocky Horror show recently... we were wild. TBF everyone was during the 'Time warp'.
Jersey Boys not so much.

GlitterPixie · 12/02/2019 21:08

Definitely not! I would definitely complain

Ontheboardwalk · 12/02/2019 21:09

No it really annoys me. Not the same but similar

Went to see singer in a band doing acoustic versions who purposely chose seated venues to avoid people talking through the gig. Nob head in front of me shouting out the words and singing band versions of the songs completely out of tune and time for the acoustic versions.

I couldn’t help it, I had to have a word and politely tell him to shut the fuck up

Foslady · 12/02/2019 21:09

Result!

Ontheboardwalk · 12/02/2019 21:10

Hope you’re having a better time in the circle!

donquixotedelamancha · 12/02/2019 21:19

I can't hold a note, but it didn't stop me warbling along to Bella figlia dell'amore from the front row of Rigoletto the other night. I just ignore the tuts and shushes from the snobs (and the theatre staff) and enjoy myself.
